I read about a dozen others..
But of those, Unsounded by Ashley Cope really stands out.
Great artwork, clever writing, fantastic lifelike characters, and incrediblly detailed worldbuilding. Updates 3 times a week [Mon / Wed / Fri].
More specifically, PREQUEL is an interactive story where readers serve as the protagonist’s subconscious. It was inspired by the user command model employed by MS Paint Adventures and is based on the Elder Scrolls universe created by Bethesda Softworks, though familiarity with either of these is not necessary to understand PREQUEL. PREQUEL began as a forum thread on the MS Paint Adventures Forums, but has since been moved to its own site for readability (you are reading that site right now).
Thanks, and I hope you enjoy reading my story about an alcoholic cat who hears internet voices.
I've just started reading it actually! Literally just started, still in the first chapter with the first monster.
I've also recently started reading Slightly Damned. Looks nice so far.Slightly Damned is one of my favourite comics, too bad it updates only once a week.
My favourites are mostly older ones, some of them even finished. Here are the ones that - if my memory serves me well - noone mentioned before.
http://www.bmoviecomic.com/index.php - The B-Movie Comic is definitely worth a check. Start with The Revenge of Rutentuten, it's the first part, and finished. Oh, and don't forget to read the author's comments, especially if you're into old "scary movies". ;)
http://www.blastwave-comic.com/ - Speaking of the Silent World, Gone With The Blastwave is basically post-apocalyptic humour. It doesn't really have a storyline, but looks nice and have just the perfect athmosphere for some giggles with goose bumps. Recommended for Cap's fans. :P
http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Monster_Soup/5359957/ - Monster Soup. Don't let the horrible title and the intro pages decieve you, it rapidly gets better. So far I really like the interactions between the characters.
http://nekothekitty.smackjeeves.com/comics/936393/001-video-games/ - Neko the Kitty. If you already read all you could find of Simon's Cat, these strips are for you. Catsez rulz.
http://taintedink.com/ - Contemplating Reiko. Strips again. Great for strengthening laughing-muscles. It gets bloody sometimes, so not really for little kids.
And last, but not least the one that I read ages ago, but I still smile when someone mentions it:
http://g2e.comicgenesis.com/d/2.html - Greater of Two Evils is a gamer-comic (so: mortals, beware!). The drawing style would be the last if I tried to collect it's merits, and the story itself isn't much either - but hey, if you ever had a good time with a tabletop role playing game, give it a chance. I'm sure it will bring up some fond memories from the good old times.
Have fun!
So many potentially good suggestions here. Some day when I have free time I'll need to visit all of the links :-)
I remembered a couple more completed webcomics that I really really enjoyed.
I'd recommend anything by Evan Dahm, Rice Boy in particular. The storytelling is just ... wow.
http://www.rice-boy.com (http://www.rice-boy.com)
Also Minus - http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus.html (http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus.html), I can't quite remember what it's about but I think it was very whimsical.
There's also Thunderpaw which I think is on hiatus but I'm not 100% sure. But do be careful it does have flashy colours and patterns at times.

Talking of bad tonal shifts in comics, I got into Unsounded without knowing what many of Ashley's fans already knew; and got a very nasty shock when the dark suddenly poured out on top of the weirdly (and slightly creepily) cute. I very nearly gave up, but, though it's darker than I normally like, I can't help but remain hooked.Unsounded is a very grotesque, but thrilling and engaging series.
I am very much hoping that Minna isn't a fan of Unsounded!
If tried Unsounded two times now, and I've given up again. I just can't stand Sette.
Sette is all kinds of awesome and three-dimensional. What a great character!I suppose I didn't wait long enough for Sette to show her other sides. Maybe I'll give it another try when I've got spare time (like upcoming SSSS chapter breaks) because the artwork looks good and there are also other characters besides her.
This has gone rather off-topic. Maybe a mod could split it and move the Unsounded discussion to the General Discussion forum? Sorry I brought it up!
Let's hope it doesn't die.
Eh, we should kill it, make it undead, and then use it as an attack zombie against all the trolls. :P
One that I read that no one has mentioned yet is Breaking Cat News (http://www.breakingcatnews.com), wherein our three intrepid reporters bring breaking news coverage of such events like "There's a new picture on the wall," (http://www.breakingcatnews.com/comic/theres-a-new-picture-on-the-wall/) "The People bought a different kind of kibble," (http://www.breakingcatnews.com/comic/the-people-bought-a-different-kind-of-kibble/) and "The trees are falling apart." It's 1am, and I'm binge-reading on Goblins. I don't think I'll stop anytime soon.Dang. That good? I'd love a new story (to go with Cat News funnies) while I archive buffer Unsounded and Ava's Demon.

Dang. That good? I'd love a new story (to go with Cat News funnies) while I archive buffer Unsounded and Ava's Demon.
I was told that Unsounded would be dark, like slavery and extreme violence dark, and I was fine with that. But no one told me that it would have been jars full of guts dark. I was alright even with that, but I gave up after a while. Mostly because I didn't like the plot and how dragged and senseless and complicated it was, but also because of the darkness of it.
Moral: I shouldn't ignore age ratings on comics. But I just know that I'm going to do it again.
BTW, what do you mean with Duanespeak? I don't find anything weird in it...
Well in my opinion he tends to... ramble.
It's 1am, and I'm binge-reading on Goblins. I don't think I'll stop anytime soon.
Thanks for that one, now I will go and quit sleeping for a long time... ;)
Actually, there's already a webcomics discussion thread: http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=20.0 (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=20.0)Well, crap! I thought I had looked it see! I bet I just skipped over it.....

Do you mind if we merge this with the other thread? I'm afraid it will demote you as thread-creator, but it would make topic-finding easier for readers.I'm not sure if it removes the thread maker count, actually. I can delete threads without affecting anyone's post count, at least...

I'm not sure if it removes the thread maker count, actually. I can delete threads without affecting anyone's post count, at least...
Anyway, I'll merge this thread once I get my computer out of my backpack.
It may sound silly but... did anyone read the comics Minna herself mentions on the left side of the pages ? 'Unsouded' is the only one I found mentioned in this thread (unless I overlooked some others).I checked them out, and bookmarked the ones I liked (and remembered to bookmark):)
I tried 'Pictures of you' and found it to be pretty good.
The prospect of a man in his 40's looking back to his youth might seem dangerously boring at first, but the author knows how to build a character and tell a story... and I read the whole thing. Did anybody else give it a try ?

Eeee! Prague Race has joined Hiveworks, and got a new site and corrections and it's quite niiiiiice!

Der-Shing Helmer's back! For anyone who was a fan of her fabulous webcomic The Meek, you'll be happy to know that she has just started a brand new comic; Mare Internum. http://www.marecomic.com/ (http://www.marecomic.com/). It's a "science fiction graphic novel about the isolated inhabitants of the planet Mars. It updates several times a week." She has also stated that she will be continuing The Meek this year. I am such a happy person right now.
She has also stated that she will be continuing The Meek this year.
Uhhh I don't have time to read all those comments to see which comics have already been mentioned ;~;
I read a lot of webcomics, so off the top of my head:
Paranatural
THIS IS NOT FICTION
Best Friends Forever
Todd Allison and the Petunia Violet
Olympus Overdrive (based on Greek mythology and the art is just the best thing)
Trying Human
Ava's Demon
Homestuck (yeah is that one even worth mentioning? I think everyone has heard about it already...)
Lackadaisy
Tripping Over You
Always Raining Here
There's more but those are the ones I remember right now without checking my list (my list is on my other computer aka the super slow one that I hate with a fiery passion)
ljhlslshgsklghsh you're the first person I met on here who reads TOY and ARH
Oh my goshExactly!
Exactly!
This is so importantIt actually kind of is because I only have like 1 other friends that reads those and now
ljhlslshgsklghsh you're the first person I met on here who reads TOY and ARH
Oh actually I read those too.Three! :D
Yay! The more the merrier :DI hope that's not too presumptuous? D:
And you consider me your friend? *is flattered*
I hope that's not too presumptuous? D:
I'm still new to the world of online comics; aside from SSSS, which is currently my favourite, I love Trying Human by Emy Bitner. Alien Sci - fi with a touch of humor, romance and mistery. I've tried Lackadaisy, but I dropped it for some reason I can't remember o.o

I prefer "The End" over "Trying Human", personally, for a comic with relatively similar themes.
Thanks everyone who recommended Ava's demon... I've read through all of it today (partly at work, oops) and am still amazed by the colours and the interesting world everything takes place in. And the animations are a great thing, too. :)
ljhlslshgsklghsh you're the first person I met on here who reads TOY and ARH
Psst, I read both as well, try Transfusions. Updates every sunday and has (like Toy and ARH) an actual good story, lovable characters and realistic relationship building.
I have stumbled into webcomic Walhalla. Still dizzy from all the lists here. Let me add some comics that I think I haven't seen listed allready. It is a little diverse, you might find something you like.
- Sin Titulo The fact that this is a webcomic and not a published book is madness (and lucky), the style is that of a professional artist (like Minna) with its own flavor, the images tell a story in itself. I cannot summarize the work without discrediting it, I can only say, the story send chills down my spine and it has a surreal/hurts my brain appeal to it. Also, finished.

Now I will be reading all the new suggestions from you lovely people here. :D
I have stumbled into webcomic Walhalla. Still dizzy from all the lists here. Let me add some comics that I think I haven't seen listed allready. It is a little diverse, you might find something you like.:O Another person who knows of Bicycle Boy!
- Blindsprings (probably known to most), good world building, smooth artstyle, I'd call it fairytale like.
http://blindsprings.com/comic/000
- Find Chaos If I had to categorize it, it merges sci-fi with the supernatural genre (vamps etc.) The story takes inspiration from both the Bible and literature. (Respecting both) Updates are a little slow and there are gay/lesbian relationships though they are not the main focus.
http://www.findchaos.com/sotfcover
- White Noise, a scifi like webcomic, nice worldbuilding (earth after alien invasion with a twist.) The author is on a small hiatus now because she broke her arm.
http://www.wncomic.com/archive_comments.php?strip_id=2
- Supernormalstep Mentioned before but it deserves to be mentioned again. The story is superb, the art is superb, magic/robots/paralell worlds have to be your thing.
supernormalstep.com
- Dumbing of Age If you are in college or enjoy reading about it, this webcomic is a must, updates every day, awesome right?
http://www.dumbingofage.com/
- Tove Started reading recently, new comic, pretty fun, adventure time like vibes.
http://www.tovecomic.com/index.php?id=1

- Bicycle Boy It is about an android who rides a bike in the desert of an apocalyptic world. I love it, just because it is pretty unique. Pretty art.
http://bicycleboy.webcomic.ws/comics/first
- Damsels don't wear glasses The comic is pretty new, and the artstyle is still 'developing'. The premises is still a mysterie, but I was hooked after the maincharacter (red hair, wears glasses) saved a GOAT from a sacrificial ritual by teenage boys in black robes.
http://damsels-dont-wear-glasses.com/?comic_id=1
Now I will be reading all the new suggestions from you lovely people here. :D
Wow! I clicked on "Sin Titulo" 45 minutes ago... and just came up for air. *Seriously* creepy -- and addictive! Thanks for sharing (assume I don't start having strangely realistic nightmares about long walks on the beach...).
:O Another person who knows of Bicycle Boy!
I haven't read through it properly, yet, but I quite like the art!
Ohh, I think I saw this artist's tumblr! She drew some SSSS fanart :)
Well I originally started reading webcomics years ago when Penny Arcade did some strips for the promotion of Fallout 3. From there I read through the PA archives and now read dozens of comics that I have found through adverts or links from other comics. I don't have time right now for a full list of the comics I read, but I may find time to come back and post it later.
Now the reason I come to post to you today is about a comic which (I think) nobody has mentioned so far. Girls With Slingshots. Over a decade of brilliant characters and story, and now it is sadly winding down in its final arc before the end. I highly recommend reading it, both for the loveable characters and so that I won't be the only one here mourning it when it ends.
http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/ (http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/)
Goopy Kitty was sad, but I am more going to miss the main characters, especially Jamie's goofy face and plans :(
I agree the thing with Vincent seems more like a set-up for future silly happenings, only there is no future so I'm not sure where that is going.
Heh, this reminds me of Tuuri and Sigrun:Omg this is exactly how that went down XD I wonder if there's a finnish version of "eto"
http://www.marycagle.com/index.php?id=2 (http://www.marycagle.com/index.php?id=2)
I always kinda liked Candy, especially with the strips featuring her over in SomethingPositive. Sure she is a terrible person, but I enjoyed the strips that focused on her.
Hmm, pretty much all I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned is Let's Speak English (http://www.marycagle.com/), The Last Cowboy (http://www.thelastcowboycomic.com/), and Miamaska (http://www.miamaska.com/index.php) . . .
Also, did anyone mention Wilde Life yet? Comic is worth a read, it is pretty new story, nice pacing, starts slow (not a bad thing) but right now things are going down faster than a rollercoaster. The premise is supernatural with a little mild horror focusing on Native American mythology, which I really like. Link: http://wildelifecomic.com/index.php?id=1Yessss, I love it! The art is really nice and realistic, and I love stories where a Normal Person gets shoved headfirst into some magical world they had no idea existed <3
The Property of Hate.
Definitely The Property of Hate.
One of the most brilliantly bizarre and symbolic stories I've ever read. She manages to write a man with a TV for a head more human than most fictional characters you can possibly think of.
Miamaska and the Last Cowboy both look pretty interesting, I'm gonna try them, thanks. ;D:D
Well I just read Prague Race, because people on here seemed to think quite highly of it. I must say it seems really good, but I am rather disappointed with how little there is of it so far, I really hoped they would go into more detail on the race reassignment. What is the current update schedule like?I don't think there is one, to be honest... it just seems to update "whenever", though there have been quite a few new pages recently.
Yessss, I love it! The art is really nice and realistic, and I love stories where a Normal Person gets shoved headfirst into some magical world they had no idea existed <3
@wolfie: I may have mentioned Wilde Life earlier, and I agree with you. It's pretty good stuff, with an apparently well-thought story, unfolding step by step (well, when your landlady's name is Barbara Yaga, you cannot expect things to remain calm forever...), and a very pleasant art.
I hadn't seen this mentioned before, but I just HAVE to give a plug to my favorite webcomics of all time. Seriously, this has set the standard for me in terms of writing and storytelling.
The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal (http://tjandamal.com/) takes place over ten days as medical student Amal comes out to his family, calls off his arranged marriage, and makes a drunken pact with a stranger in a bar to drive to Providence from San Francisco. That stranger is TJ, who... is really hard to describe in one word.
It's so much more than a road trip story - the characters are so fleshed out, they feel like real people, the art is great, just... guh this comic. There's occasionally some NSFW bits, but it's not gratuitous.
So, while taking a break from stressing about my maths test, I decided to go through this entire thread, and I found this:
I just
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RECOMMENDING THIS SOLO
I LOVE IT
IT BROUGHT ME HAPPINESS WHEN ALL ELSE FAILED (aka maths are stupid and I'm using this comic as a carrot to keep me going)

Holy moly, TJ and Amal is good! I had to cut myself off after 11 chapters so as not to spend all day on it! Thanks to Solovei for the orig. recommendation and Sigrid Marie for reminding me.I'm not sure what you mean by Larger Design? It's a road-trip story, so obviously the story is going to Providence ;)
I live in the Bay Area and often drive up I-80 to Tahoe, so I can see how *right* the artist got all the details. I love precision and realism, even in fantasy-based narratives (which is one of the things I like about SSSS). Plus, the character interaction is fascinating even if I don't yet see a Larger Design in where the story is going. (I'm sure there is a Larger Design.)
I just meant, more than "Stuff happens" and "more stuff happens" and "TJ enjoys taking a shower" and "Amal fields phone calls." Presumably there's a payoff in terms of the character arcs (to borrow a pretentious term from TV writers). It's definitely a very character-driven story (no pun intended) so I guess, the arcs mostly play out in their interactions with each other. But yes, the first few chapters are a little slow to start off as the guys are getting to know each other and start actually interacting. There's also little hints that foreshadow future developments, which I had to go back and look at again before going "oh so THAT'S why _______"
Not to say I'm not enjoying the "stuff happens" part...! (Including gratuitous Amal exposure. ;))
- Girls with Slingshot: not always safe for work but a very funny comic on people who have lives... and can hear plant and have goopy cats....
Last strip is tomorrow, are you prepared? I'm not :(Nooooooooooooooooo :( :'(
and
one super obscure one
for those who can read Norwegian
it's super old and is a Classic on this norwegian webcomic site I used to frequent as a very small child (is it even still active. wow it is. who knew)
it's a crudely-drawn-in-MSpaint comic about Loki and the norse gods
here it is (http://loke.nettserier.no/2006/06/30/)
(and here is a spinoff series that is in my opinion even funnier (http://aageteodor.nettserier.no/2006/09/12/))
hahahaha this is the worst contribution to this thread
oh my gosh
HAIZ
HAIZ, WHAT AM I READING
I AM IN TEARS
*spends the rest of the night snickering over super awful yet hilarious webcomic*
Anything that goes by the name Ulf-Kurt has to be amazing, if you ask meobviously, my taste in webcomics is impeccable
honestly though I should not go digging in my past like this
that website is one of the reasons I'm so scared of forum participation now
Would it be too much to ask why?WELL
Found a new webcomic to read, I have no clue if it is allready mentioned because boy the list is endless.
Lovers of Always Raining here and or Tripping over You might like it specially:
This is Not Fiction, a boy goes on a quest to find his favorite author, who writes under a secret name, he calls in the help of his nextdoor neighbour, who has a crush on him. Very cute style.
And I read this about a year now, but reminds me off them as well: Transfusions, human and vampire fall in love, but believe me it is not as cliché as it sounds, pretty angsty, just like ARH.
I am only concerned with finishing homework while wanting to read those instead...
THIS IS NOT FICTION IS AMAZING
SO CUTE
I think I mentioned that one before, but I'm glad it's brought up again because it's awesome <3
Julian is so the cutest design I've seen in awhile, so poofy and round I am completely defenceless against that puppy behaviour, maternal instinct all over the place. <:3
Edit: The imposter writer character is a crossover with another comic 'Best Friends Forever' Do you know that one too? It is very sweet as well!
Of course! BFF is one of my favourites, it's got such an amazing art style! And did you know that in BFF there's an appearance by Cyril from Todd Allison and the Petunia Violet?
Okay so there is this one webcomicWhy. Why am I reading this beautiful piece of cross dressing Pokemon garbage? I'm going to have to read all of it now!!!! ALL OF IT
that is a pokemon/magical girl animes crossover
it's absolutely ridiculous and I love it:
Black Adventures (http://blackadventurescomic.com/baarchive/)
the first comic is based on the Black/White games, and is completed. A comic based on XY has just begun.
The first pages are a tad confusing because of Reasons, but it gets more and more coherent and story-like after a while!!
I hardly get any of the anime references but it's still fun.
(not recommended for people who are uncomfortable with crossdressing and stuff, ehe)
hahahaha this is the worst contribution to this thread
FYI, "Thistil Mistil Kistil" (http://tmkcomic.depleti.com/)is back to updating! (The artist took most of January-March off to publish her first printed volume and create a buffer.)
This is an excellent comic about a fantasy version of the Viking Age, *very* carefully researched, including the surprising bits (such as the interaction of Christian and Muslim worlds with Vikings and other pagan cultures, creepy funeral customs, and more), plus plentiful humor and a vivid, distinctive art style reminiscent of "The Secret of Kells." It even features cool Icelandic runes (http://tmkcomic.depleti.com/comic/ch11-pg00/)and a dissatisfied shepherd.
It's suitable for ages 8 and up (off-screen death; reference to curses, slavery, and the undead; some cartoon violence; and a few discreet references to adult situations). I heartily recommend it.

I think those two are no longer web, but Rat Queens is pretty hilarious and the art is awesome.
ah yes I read the first volume of rat queens pretty recently
i'm still laughing at this

he's just shouting "magic raven murder" in mangled norwegian like nbd
(he did in fact summon murderous magic ravens though)
If no-one's mentioned xkcd on here yet ....
Although, in the eternal words of Mr Munroe himself, "this comic occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)"
so, y'know, all you tiny children out there, perhaps not.
Despite the disclaimer I'd say that xkcd is good for people of all ages. If the young 'uns on here are anything like me they will have learnt nearly all the swear words and their meanings by the time they left primary school. xkcd is great for encouraging an inquisitive mind and poking fun at accepted norms so I would think it is a good read for ages 12 and up. You don't need to understand all of it to enjoy it.
And if nothing else, read the What-If section. Honestly my favorite thing, and most definitely appropriate for all ages, minds, whatever. Read the alt-text, too.^that!
I have it in book form.
When it's also free on the internet.
So, Jake Wyatt has finally started posting more of Necropolis (http://jakewyattriot.tumblr.com/tagged/necropolispage/chrono). Too early to tell too much of what it's about, but I really, really love the art style. And the main character's design. Who is called the Third Sword, which makes me love her even more.I've seen the development sketches on Tumblr before it actually came out, and yes the art style is great! I just wish it was like, on it's own dedicated site or something because it can be really hard to go through otherwise... I'm still yet to actually start reading it because of that.

(also I love secret of kells so much you have no idea)
I can't believe I haven't actually *watched* "Secret of Kells," just seen stills. Gotta fix that soon.
I can't believe I haven't actually *watched* "Secret of Kells," just seen stills. Gotta fix that soon.I have seen it last year and can't understand why so late, because it's wonderful :)
You absolutely need to fix that! The Secret of Kells is my favorite animated movie; it's worth the watch if only for the visuals.
Was The Glass Scientists (http://www.theglassscientists.com/) mentioned here yet? I just found it following a link from another webcomic (the ever so awesome Family Man (http://www.lutherlevy.com/)) and it looks very promising!

I'm reading The end right now, and the alt-text-saga is literally my favorite part of the comic. So much that I pay more attention to it than the actual story.
Trial of the sun !!! (http://trialofthesun.com/ (http://trialofthesun.com/))Oh my gosh, thank you for posting about this! A friend of mine was talking about it like a year ago and it seemed really cool but I had totally forgotten the name!
Oh my gosh, thank you for posting about this! A friend of mine was talking about it like a year ago and it seemed really cool but I had totally forgotten the name!
I'm placing this here, because technically this is a webcomic, since it is only appearing on Facebook (you don't need a FB account to see it), but I thought it was important for all good Minnions to hear this news: Bloom County is back!! Yep! Opus, Binkley, Milo, Oliver Wendell Jones, Cutter John, Steve Dallas, even the anxiety closet! They're all back! So sit down in the dandelion patch and enjoy the best comic that ever lived: https://www.facebook.com/berkeleybreathed/photos/a.114529165244512.10815.108793262484769/1004028256294594/?type=1&theater (https://www.facebook.com/berkeleybreathed/photos/a.114529165244512.10815.108793262484769/1004028256294594/?type=1&theater) For those Minnions who are too young to remember the original Bloom County; go ask your parents. It was wonderful, and still is.
*raises thread from a month's hibernation*
You should all take a look at Catalist. (http://tbcnetwork.com/series/catalist) It's a sort of multimedia, animated webcomic/visual novel/other things with gorgeous art and character designs in a sprawling fantasy world. It also stars cats, which makes it even better, though so far it's still rather new/short.Not to mention several of my favorite artists worked on it/are currently illustrating it...
Seconded. Catalist is beautiful! It's in intermission right now, but there's... 15-16 episodes up? And don't forget to play the music for that episode while you're reading! c:
As for other webcomic recommendations not put here yet... :3cSpoiler: I read so many webcomics that I cant even list them all and that's not even a joke at this point show
Thanks for the recommendations, Misea. Unfortunately, apostrophes break the Spoiler code so it won't open. (No other punctuation seems to break spoilers like that.) Want to rephrase? Otherwise, we can see your recommendations by quoting the post.
Fixed T_T It's times like these that I wish I wasn't so adamant on writing things in Proper English Grammar

Spoiler TEXT![/spoiler]
HEYYY ive been meaning to drop by this thread so HERE I AM.....i love webcomics okay. ill try not to repeat any that have already been mentioned, but forgive me if i slip up!
JUNE (http://june.smackjeeves.com/comics/1046026/cover/)
a surreal horror webcomic about a boy with a bag over his head looking for his mom in a wonderfully illustrated hellscape; the black and white makes for a very creepy atmosphere, and it has fantastic aesthetic, characters, and story. ive reread it multiple times because its really, really great! by far one of my favorite webcomics, and a big inspiration to me!!
status: complete!!
SHOOTAROUND (http://www.webtoons.com/en/comedy/shoot-around/ep-1/viewer?title_no=399&episode_no=1)
recommended by curry from jesty, a really lovely take on a zombie apocalypse involving a group of girls and their coach; big focus on character development and interaction, really cute art style, INCREDIBLY diverse cast of characters, all of whom are extremely lovable; i cant gush enough about this webcomic okay its charming and funny and can still get heavy without feeling forced and awkward, and just as quick whip around back to comedy and its REALLY WONDERFUL
status: updates fridays/saturdays
SAINT FOR RENT (http://www.saintforrent.com/comic/the-cloverhouse-inn)
this has been mentioned here but i need to rec it too because its another one thats been a huuuuge influence on me; the setting is an inn for time travelers, a slice-of-life that is quickly getting deeper. outstanding art and writing, i always love to reread it whether to catch things i missed in story or just admire the art!!
status: updates mondays/tuesdays/fridays
NOT DRUNK ENOUGH (http://www.ndecomic.com/comic/page-1)
from the same artist of 'HANNA IS NOT A BOY'S NAME'!!!! their art is exceptional, and they have incredible control over color and REALLY interesting paneling - i love it i love it i love it!! a repair job goes horribly awry and our protagonist gets locked in with monsters and mad scientists and body horror, oh my! the comedy is great and the dialogue and art is even better, please give this one a read!
status: updates tuesdays and thursdays
TODD ALLISON AND THE PETUNIA VIOLET (http://petuniaviolet.com/index.php?id=1)
if youre not reading tapv i....have no idea what to even say......it has wonderful character interaction, intriguing story, great humor, and the artist is really sweet!! the premise is 20th century melbourne, which is being hit by a serial arsonist. petunia elkwood gets mixed up with her eccentric neighbor todd allison, while the both of them try to figure out just what the Heck is going on! i in no way do it justice, but so much is going on its hard to capture the brilliance of tapv GO READ IT!!! RIGHT MEOW!!
status: updates sporadically
THE BOY WHO FELL (http://www.boywhofell.com/index.php?id=1)
ren falls into hell! he enters a bloodthirsty killing contest to get out of hell!! i really like tbwf - its much more anime than the usual webcomics i read, but i think it really lends itself to the atmosphere, especially when you see babyfaced ren all covered in blood. it can be almost painfully trope-y, but i actually find that super charming LOL;; im SUPER interested to see what everything is leading up to, what all the characters motives are, and what the deal is with all these mysteries, because there sure are a lot of them!!! i would TOTALLY recommend it, demi really knows where shes going with this story and im excited to be taken on this wild ride

there are SOOOO mnay more i need to read, tho. seriously.
I have no idea if this has been recommended before, I've read it in one day, archive is just long enough for a nice read: BACK.
http://backcomic.com/ > It seems to be a western, but wait no it has some apocalyptic elements, and magic, humor, and umm... A little bit of everything. Drawing style is simple but effective. Also includes quite an interesting main character.
Has anyone mentioned this one yet?
The Prophecy of the Circle: http://www.prophecyofthecircle.com/comic/prologue/
The art is absolutely beautiful, inks and watercolors, but the story line is absolutely addicting. The world that this artist has creative is outstanding. I can't wait for new pages now, and to see the conclusion one day.... Also, the artist updates twice a week.
And surely someone has mentioned Skin Deep? http://www.skindeepcomic.com/archive/issue-1-cover/
At first I wasn't too enthused about the art itself, it was just okay (I really have no room to critique, I can't draw faces either) but the story was addicting enough for me to keep reading. Like all webcomic artists, her art only got better and better. Each new page is a treat now. Again, another outstanding example of worldbuilding, and a story that has keep me reading for over two years now. She updates every Tuesday.
Enjoy! :)
I want to recommend Subnormality. (http://www.viruscomix.com/page586.html) It is by far my favorite webcomic. It is a sort of a slice of life comic that has way too many words, updates very infrequently and may occasionally turn you into a crying husk of a person while reading it. But in a good way.I'll be sure to check that one out!
Sound fun? Great!

So I just read Traveller (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/extracomics/comic.php?c=Traveller), a side comic to Gunnerkrigg court (http://gunnerkrigg.com/) that's been available in paper but that Tom released on the web a few days ago. Looks like a very sweet summer story, judging by the cover. And it is sweet, really really sweet. But. I'm wiping tears and swallowing a huge lump in my throat without success. Recommended read, and works pretty good as a standalone even if you haven't read Gunnerkrigg, but not if you're not up for crying just a little bit.
So, one of the really big webcomics, Homestuck, ended yesterday. Wonder what will the Hussie's next project be, after the Hiveswap game.Is Homestuck worth checking out? I started it once and couldn't get past Act 1, but apparentky it gets much better. What do you think of the trolls?
Also I recommend reading Homestuck and the author's previous comic Problem Sleuth (much shorter). Both can be found at http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?viewpage=archive (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?viewpage=archive)
Read this https://gigidigi.itch.io/ladyAh, thanks, this is cool!
Its a short comic by the creator of Cucumber Quest (READ THAT AS WELL) about an Acolyte falling in love with her godess.

I doubt anyone has mentioned it here before since the comic was launched about two months ago, but there is a new fantasy webcomic called ”Lilith’s word”. I can’t tell so much about it, since as I said it almost just launched, but so far it’s been really good, so if you’re looking for a new comic to read I’ll recommend it.Ooh yes this one is great, I will second that recommendation!

This reminds me I should finish reading it at some point. How I came across it is kind of funny: I somehow ran into a blog that had given SSSS a bad review back in 2015, but that same person had really liked "Shoot Around", so I got a little curious.
The irony. My problem with "Shoot Around" (relative problem, I still read it to the end) is that I basically couldn't tell the characters apart - sure they had diverse race and genders, but to me they didn't have any distinctive personality traits - the opposite of SSSS, basically.

I need help. I've finally decided to read Romantically Apocalyptic and already agree with all the nice things said about it, but I have a problem
Turns out there are two completely canon versions I can read: English and Russian (I've read the first 5 pages in both languages). I thought that the author, who is from Russia, was just translating his comic, but NO! It's an entirely new take on the story! With different references and local jokes and additional content with re-written situations from the English version. Only without gifs and sounds and such
I'm so confused! Should I read it in my native language or get to know the "original" story first, what do you think?
What a delightful dilemma to have! A canon AU? Both!

...hold the phone.. are you saying RA was localized by the artist?.... That's kick-ass!
This thread will be merged into the general webcomics discussion, thanks.
(I'm also intrigued how Chris knew Minna in 2005, did they go to school together?)
Btw the Kickstarter has just one day left to fund!! If anybody wants to check it out but is daunted by the idea of investing in a 500+ page comic right away, here's a video I made of what makes Yokoka's Quest great!! >u</
Your tastes can't be that bad if you're here. Otherwise, I can relate to feeling unfit to criticize media. In fantasy settings, I'm much more interested in how the fantasy elements impact the average citizen's life and what happens in the downtime between the "kicking magical ass" moments than in the "kicking magical ass" moments themselves, and those can be quite pleasant to read in the hands of a good writer who also likes writing them. However, it seems like quite a few fantasy fans want the story to get to the "kicking magical ass" part as fast as possible and consider everything else "boring", so I'm currently a super-fan of two series that get negative criticism for spending too much time on their "slice of life" portions.
- Always Human (on webtoon): budding romance in a world in which you can change your appearance at will. very wholesome and sweetThat's one of my favourites too. Aerial Magic, by the same author, is also good.
https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/always-human/list?title_no=557
My other favorite Year in Hereafter: http://www.yihcomic.com/ooh, yes, that one's good too! it has a beautiful art style
Fantasy adventure in a setting based on Finnish mythology. Now at very close to 500 pages and regularly updates twice a week. YiH was on hiatus for a while but is back now and Miikka has commented he has a good size buffer and is foreseeing regular updates for many months.
It seems that it's been a while since someone last visited this thread, so I thought I could resurrect it, because why not? And since I need something to actually post, here's my current top 10 webcomics (minus SSSS and aRTD):
- El Goonish Shive (https://www.egscomics.com/) - a comic about a bunch of high-schoolers and their bizarre (and not so bizarre) problems. Science fantasy comedy/drama, very pro LGBT, genderbending aplenty.
- Unsounded (http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic+index/) - a fantasy comic about a daughter of a mafia boss and her undead wizard companion going on an adventure together. Gets very dark, very fast.
- Blonde Sunrise (https://www.blondesunrise.com/) - a comic that is technically about werewolves. Lots of mystery.
- Kill Six Billion Demons (https://killsixbilliondemons.com/) - oh boy, where do I even begin? Angels, devils, god-people, martial arts, weird cosmology and incredible pseudo-religious/philosophical atmosphere. Also, a fantastic heist arc.
- The Order of the Stick (https://www.giantitp.com/) - a D&D epic with stick figures.
- Exvulnerum (https://zules.com/exvulnerum/) - a guy who can't die and a rich, ditzy girl go see the world. Starts out mostly lighthearted, gets darker later on due to the titular Exvulnerum.
- Gunnerkrigg Court (https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/) - weird stuff.
- Sire - descendants of famous fictional characters have to deal with the legacy of their forefathers. Very metafictional. No longer available, so whatever.
They're largely decently popular, so there's not a lot of opportunities to showcase my garbage taste, but hey, there's gotta be something terrible in there, right?
Sire's still around I think, it's just that Smackjeeves, the hosting site, decided to go into full garbage mode, and basically broke every single webcomic URL related to it as it created sites with far worse UI in their reorganization. It says "unavailable in your region", though. No more reading for me, I guess.
It says "unavailable in your region", though. No more reading for me, I guess.
hello ssss forum, do YOU enjoy comics about finnish mages? do YOU enjoy comics where not everyone is straight and white? would you like to see a saami character actually existing??? do you like gentle stories centering mental health and interpersonal relationships? MAY I PRESENT TO YOU
The Witch Door (https://www.thewitchdoor.com/)
+1 for the Witch Door, though be warned that there is a depiction of biphobia there - obviously not endorsed by the comic - that I found hard hitting due to how realistic the situation is.
[ . . .] do YOU enjoy comics where not everyone is straight and white? [ . . . ]
The Witch Door[/url]
And where the people are shaped like people! also there is an excellently depicted cat.
Also: "A better place (https://tapas.io/series/A-BETTER-PLACE/info)", recently finished, a Comic about a future-earth that has been terraformed by a young child with the powers to create everything she can imagine. The main story is in the pages themselves, but in the page-descriptions and the tags are even more hidden details, worldbuilding and how the actions of the protagonists affect the world they´re in. It´s great.

Maybe something with a Sam in the title?? It was very good. The other one was this almost illustration book, with lots of different art styles, but it had a story and it was about this girl and this weird fuzzy hat creature that went on a journey together. It was also excellent.

A Girl and Her Fed (AGAHF) is the story of a girl who finds she is being watched by the government. She and the federal agent assigned to her case form a partnership and attempt to untangle a knotty conspiracy. After that, things get complicated.
if these have been mentioned, I apologize.
I have been reading year in the hereafter (Finnish mythos lightly based) Updates usually Fridays
Vainglorious (http://vaingloriouscomic.com/) is about a dragon who got banished and cursed into human shape as a punishment for challenging his queen, along with the the human he landed on and the blue elf he got kicked out of their village. Valuable life lessons will presumably be learned at some point. Also the human character bears a passing resemblance to one Emil Vasterstrom, both in appearance and in personality.
Just in case anyone else was wondering: Year in Hereafter is not dead after all. The author took the site down for overhauls and simce he had expressed doubts over the whole thing I worried he’d decided to scrap everything and start over. But luckily not! He rebuilt the website entirely, but the comic content is back, and currently at p 600. He’ll be updating sporadically but he is still around.
YIH has many themes that may well interest an SSSS fan: it’s high fantasy in a Kalevala related setting. The art is great. All main characters are white men, but otherwise I like it very much. http://yihcomic.com/index.php
So I just pitched MAiZ as Comic of the Month. It's a story about mostly anthro characters but one of them is human and others are, to put it mildly, weirded out by that.Tamberlane definitely looks interesting :)
Lo and behold, I just ran across Tamberlane (https://www.tamberlanecomic.com/comic/1/), a story about mostly anthro characters but one of them is human and other are weirded out by that. As of now I've only made it through chapter 1, but so far it's very sweet.
