These two are inspired by Reynir's dream starting at Page 318.

First one is to the tune of "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane.
/>

One crate holds some candles and one crate holds some food,
And one that Iceland gives you has someone’s red-haired brood.
Go ask Onni, back in Keuruu.

And if you go crossing bridges that you know are going to fall,
Tell the Admiral it was like that before you came to call.
Call Onni, in the magic halls.

When the beasts in the water rise up and drag you down below,
And you’ve just blown some kind of cat bomb and your spells are working slow.
Go ask Onni, I think he’ll know.

When the dream world leaves you floating upon a backward tide,
And the night scout is speaking Finnish, and a ghost dog takes your ride.
Remember what the captain cried!
Tell from the eyes!
From the eyes!

The next one was inspired by Ruby's comment on Page 321, "I really wish Reynir's mouth was open in panel 2 so we could dub him singing "Colors of the Wind." I replied with just one verse that time but it got me going and I had to write the full thing.

So,  to "Colors of the Wind" from the film Pocahontas.
/>Jonny S also found a nice karaoke link:
/>
"Change the Wind"

You think you have no helpful skills to offer,
You got yourself mixed up in some bad jive,
But even though you don’t know what going on here,
It is enough to know we can survive.

You think that all the people here are crazy,
Well in this cat tank maybe you are right,
But if you follow the path of the mages,
You’ll learn things that just might help them be all right.

Have you ever heard a beast howl on a rainy night?
Or tiptoed past a nest that trolls are in?
Can you write a rune or speak an incantation?
Can you prophesize or sing to change the wind?
Can you prophesize or sing to change the wind?

Come run through hidden fog banks of the dream world,
Come taste the cool clean waters of your mind,
Come play with puppies of imagination,
And for once be not afraid of what you find.

The Swede who spills food on himself might punch you,
The skald is not immune but she can drive,
That big guy makes some really tasty biscuits,
And we’re all in a scary land but we’re alive.

How far does the bird path go?
If you look away then you’ll never know.

And you’ll never hear a beast howl on a rainy night,
Whether you are Icelandic or you’re Finn,
You need to write a rune or speak an incantation,
You need to prophesize or sing to change the wind.

You can walk the earth and still,
All you’ll do is walk until,
You can prophesize or sing to change the wind.

Lalli the Dreamer  (from "Beautiful Dreamer")

Lalli the dreamer, wake up and see,
Red-headed Reynir is coming to thee.
Sounds of the troll's world, heard in the day,
Killed by the magelight, have all passed away.

Lalli the dreamer, young Finnish mage,
Hear; he approaches through dream's scenery.
Gone are the cares of scared shepherd boy,
Lalli the dreamer, wake up and see.

Lalli the dreamer, asleep on your bed,
Wild trolls are taunting; they'll take your head.
Over the dreamscape, Reynir is born,
Wanting to greet you in bright coming morn.

Lalli the dreamer, teach mage's part,
E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea,
Then Reynir's clouds of sorrow depart,
Lalli the dreamer, wake up and see,

Lalli the dreamer, wake up and see!

Trees to Meet You

Reynir through the place in the fog.
This isn't merely a forest so dank,
Some kind wooded marshland or bog.
Finnish feline sleeps on, on those planks.
While Reynir sinks in the ground on his jog,
Lalli stirs not on the side of the bank.

Finally managing to get near is dear Rey,
To the silently slumbering enigma Lalli.
He'll not get any peace now, okay...
The Icelandic man's not so subtle, is he?
Abruptly calling out to him: "Hey!"
Waking the poor man up so suddenly.

Woke You Up Before I Go-Go (based on Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham!)

Kitty-cat
Kitty-cat
Kitty-cat
Kitty-cat

I saw the troll-dog with collar-heart
It sent my soul sky high, I had to depart
Kitty-cat what's going on?
Sound of shlup-shlup-shlup and I nearly tripped up

But now I'm bugging you, something ain't right
Mikkel friend told me what to do last night
Left me sleepin' in my bed, I was dreaming
Maybe should have been with you instead.

Woke you up before I go-go
Don't let you slumber on like a rock bro
Woke you up before I go-go
I had to get you when I saw you in this site

Woke you up before I go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Woke you up before I go-go
We're both dreaming tonight
Now I can wake up, right? (yeah, yeah)

I saw the dark trees out of my way
Had to get from the sheep that would eat my braid
I hope you know I'm not to blame
Since I woke up here, never been the same

'Cause I'm the braidy, I'm the fool
Call make me crazy I've been to no school
Come on, kitty, let's not fight
I'm so sorry, everything will be all right

Woke you up before I go-go
Don't let you slumber on like a rock bro
Woke you up before I go-go
I had to get you when I saw you in this site

Woke you up before I go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Woke you up before I go-go
We're both dreaming tonight
Now I can wake up, right? (yeah, yeah, kitty)

(Kitty-cat)
(Kitty-cat)

Now wake up, please help me tonight
We're still dreaming here, am I right?
It's cold out there, but it's warm in bed
They can hunt, we'll stay here instead

(Kitty-cat)

Woke you up before I go-go
Don't let you slumber on like a rock bro
Woke you up before I go-go
I had to get you when I saw you in this site

Woke you up before I go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Woke you up before I go-go
We're both dreaming tonight
Yeah yeah

More silly fun inspired by page 324

Tune: "Wake Up Little Susie" - Everly Brothers

Wake up, little Lalli, wake up!
Wake up, little Lalli, wake up!

We both are sound asleep,
Wake up Little Lalli and see,
This dream is strange, I need some help, oh please don’t think I’m a creep.
Wake up little Lalli, Wake up little Lalli.

Well, what are we gonna tell your cousin?
What are we going to tell Emil?
What are we gonna tell the captain when she says… “What the hell?”
Wake up little Lalli, Wake up little Lalli.

Well I told Mikkel that I don’t even dream,
Well Lalli pal I guess I’m wrong it seems.
Wake up little Lalli, Wake up little Lalli,
What is this place?

Wake up, little Lalli, wake up!
Wake up, little Lalli, wake up!

This dreaming isn’t so hot,
A dead dog scared me a lot.
And then there’s sheep, This mud is deep, My sanity is shot.
Wake up little Lalli, Wake up little Lalli.

Well, what are we gonna tell your cousin?
What are we going to tell Emil?
What are we gonna tell the captain when she says… “What the hell?”
Wake up little Lalli, Wake up little Lalli,
What is this place?

“Dreamland Reynir”
from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ9r8LMU9bQ “Rock the Casbah”
by the Clash

So Mikkel wrapped up Reynir well
And soon the boy was fast asleep
He woke in a dreamland boat
Where a Skulldog made him leap
He ran across the waters fast
So scared he just wanted to weep
But he found some dry ground with
A cute doggie and some sheep

He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir
He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir

The doggie was a sweetheart
And sheep are always sheep
But Reynir didn’t count them
He was already asleep
But this pastoral scene brought out
The sweet memories of home
He called himself so stupid
For his sad attempt to roam
But even as a sheep
Munched on his hair
Reynir saw something

He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir
He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir

He saw a Finnish woodland
And a slight recumbent form
Reynir leapt to join him
With wonted greetings warm
Reynir hopped across the water
Into the Finnish scene
With nary a thought
Of what dangers could have been

Reynir found that it was boggy
And that his boots began to sink
But he kept on going anyway
Didn’t stop to think

The Cat-Mage lay there quiet
In his state of rest
But then Reynir said, “Hey!”
As he came into the nest

The Cat-Mage lay there quiet
Lalli at peace
Until Reynir came

He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir
He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir

He’s really excited
(He went up to Lalli)
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir
He’s really excited
(But he may be in for a surprise)
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir

He’s really excited
(Our goofy little Reynir)
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir
He’s really excited
Dreamland Reynir
Dreamland Reynir

Based on Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's

Hey there weird fellow
What's this here, your dreamworld corner
I just came here and then spotted you
Tonight I want to talk
well, yes, I do

What do you mean that you don't care
I swear it's true

Hey sleepy fellow
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give my voice another listen

Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it's my disguise
I'm by your side

Oh, just what you do to me
Oh, please let the knife in there
Oh, just what you do to me
Oh, don't shove me back in there

Hey angry fellow
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me Lalli someday
We'll be friends I hope and then

We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey baffled fellow
I've got so much left to say
If not every single thing I said to you
Would raise your anger more

I'd say it all
But I think you'd murder me in here
Once and for all

Oh, just what you do to me
Oh, please let the knife in there
Oh, just what you do to me
Oh, don't shove me back in there

A dreamland void seems pretty far
But we've got awesome powers here
I walk to you for company's sake every night
Our friends will all make fun of us
And we'll just laugh along because
We know that none of them will come here soon
Lalli that I can promise you
That by the time we get through
My world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame

Hey there mage fellow
You be good and please don't hiss at me
Every night I will come visit you
And we'll be making history

And I come
You'll see it's nothing much to fear
We can do whatever we want to
Hey Lalli why do you still glare
I'm here and care

Oh, just what you do to me
Oh, please let the knife in there
Oh, just what you do to me
Oh, don't shove me back in there
What you do to me

Pg. 325

In Your Face

Reynir and Lalli have a nice little chat,
Actually Reynir's doing most of the speaking.
While Lalli silently staring, remains sat.
Reynir'll not find the help that he's seeking.

Reynir seems in a state of ignorant bliss,
Speaking gibberish, making small talk, you see.
Lalli doesn't know what to make of all this.
The man appearing all of a sudden, unexpectedly.

Lalli gets up and reaches over the pool,
Delicately balancing on the wood base.
Trying to get rid of the Icelandic fool,
Raising the water to splash into his face.

---------------------------------------------------

Out Out by Peter Gabriel (with a few small changes)

Had enough of this
Out out out out
I've seen a crazy man, crazy man
By the water in the wood, crazy man
I've seen a crazy man, crazy man
Crash through flowers in the big wood
Do not know why it is that he's here where I go
He's seeing won't leave, won't leave
He bothers me
All beside me
As he's talking up all beside me
With his big teeth, small teeth
He bothers me
I've had enough
Get him out out, out out

Gotta do something, can't do nothing
Cause I know this person, they don't know me at all
I want him out of my dreams
Get him out, get him out, out out
Get him out, get him out, out out

When I'm here I look around me in a wood
I see the red hair, braid hair, so stupid
And in the lonely night, watch the disappearing light
On red hair, braid hair, swear he's moving in

Gotta do something, can't do nothing
Cause I know these person, they don't know me at all
Get him to leave out of my dreams, again
Get him to leave out of my dreams
Get him out, get him out, out out
Get him out, get him out, out out
Out out out Hey Hey Hey out out
Out out out Ho Ho Ho Ho...

Come out of the night
Get him out, get him out
Come out of the shadow
Out of fear, out of fear and pain
Into the waking world
Into the waking world
I will get you out again, won't talk with you
Out of the shadow, out of fear and pain
You will see, you will see, you will see, you will see
I will get you out again
Out out, out, out
Drain away the pool, out of darkness
Out of shadow, out of the night
Out of all this pain I'm getting
Ho ho ho ho, out out...
Out out out out out hey hey...

(AUTHOR'S NOTE:  I honestly had no idea people would respond to my riff on a 30-year-old song with long, repetitive, abstract lyrics.  I was very pleasantly surprised by the response on Disqus.)

What Minna neglected to show us on the last page, while Reynir was still in Dream!Iceland:

[Kantele arpeggios. Faint moanings from shepherds' pipes. Shamanic drums and rattles lay down a powerfully hypnotic beat. A gaunt, dark-haired man in oversized gray clothes steps out from behind the waterfall, fixes Reynir with his gaze and starts to speak in a resonant, preacher-like tenor.

You may find yourself locked in a tuna crate.
And you may find yourself stranded in the Silent World.
And you may find yourself in the back of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful land, with some beautiful sheep

And you may ask yourself: Well... How did I get here?

Letting the dreams go by
Let the Finn swamp hold me down
Letting the dreams go by
Water flowing over ground
Into the void again
After my boat has gone
Once in a lifetime
Mage-boy floating over ground

And you may ask yourself, What is this strange place with all the icebergs?
And you may ask yourself, Where’d that creepy dog come from?
And you may tell yourself, This is not warm, tropical Bornholm!
And you may tell yourself, this is not my Icelandic life!

Letting the dreams go by
Let the Finn swamp hold me down
Letting the dreams go by
Braid-boy floating over ground
Into the void again
After my boat has gone
Once in a lifetime
I remember my dreams now

And you may ask yourself, What is that beautiful swamp?
And you may ask yourself, Where does that wooden path lead to?
And you may ask yourself, Hey, don't I know that guy?
And he may yell GET OUT! (What have I done?!)

Water dissolving... and water removing
There is water all around the Mageworld
Under the water, gather the water in the Collective Unconscious.
Remove the water at the bottom of the Mageworld.

Same as it ever was
Stupid things I do
Same as it ever was
Stupid, stupid me
Same as it ever was
Stupid things I do
Same as it ever was
Stupid, stupid me

Space isn't holding up
Time isn't holding up
Language is an asterisk
I'll remember this

Stupid, stupid me
Stupid, stupid me
Here comes a new friend now
Here comes a new friend now
Watch out for the cat-attack
Watch out for the cat-attack

Once in a lifetime...

Branching Out

Lalli raises up the vines
From within the watery pool.
These thin weapons of pine
Reach out to the poor fool.

Reynir is smacked with a spline
Right in the face, uncool.
Alright, leaving now. Fine.
Didn't know this unwritten rule.

Leaving the place with a whine
There are jerks when he dreams
This magical dream of thine
Not as cool as it seemed

Depart from the man wood enshrined
Walk forlorn out on the stream
Took the hint, read all the signs
Losing what's left of his self esteem

Lalli looks on and follows him out
Rushing behind the oblivious man
As Reynir reflects solemnly and pouts
What's Lalli up to? What is his plan?

Almost got stuck in the portal that closed
A mystery why he would do such a thing
Now he is following the man he opposed
Reynir's now stumbling, dream wandering

---------------------------------------

I Felt it Through These Wood Vines
(based on I Heard it Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye)

I bet you're wonderin' how I knew
I just planned to talk to you
With the other guy I saw before
Between the two of us guys
You know my face is sore
It took me by surprise I must say
When I found out the price I'd pay
Don't you know that I felt it through these wood vines
Not much help in this dream time
Oh I felt it through these wood vines
Oh I'm just about to lose my mind
Help me, help me, yeah

I felt it through these wood vines
Not much help in this dream time
Braidy, wooh wooh wooh

I know a man ain't supposed to cry
But these tears I can't hold inside
Gotta leave and end my life, you see
'Cause you were so mean to me
You could have told me yourself
That you liked no-one else
Instead I felt it through these wood vines
Not much help in this dream time
Oh, I felt it through these wood vines
And I'm just about to lose my mind
Help me, help me, yeah

I felt it through these wood vines
Not much help in this dream time
Braidy, wooh wooh wooh

Wanted conversation that you refused
Smacked me with the vines so thin
And I can't help but be confused
If it's true please tell me Fin
Cast me out, did you just choose
To then follow to this dream I'm in?

Don't you know I felt it through these wood vines
Not much help in this dream time, braidy yeah
I felt it through these wood vines
I'm just about to lose my mind
Help me, help me, yeah
I felt it through these wood vines,
Not much help in this dream time, braidy yeah
Help me, help me, yeah

I felt it through these wood vines,
Not much help in this dream time, braidy yeah yeah
I felt it through these wood vines,
Not much help in this dream time, braidy yeah yeah

Runo Time
« Reply #355 on: May 25, 2015, 03:42:47 AM »
I have a helpless fascination with the Finnish runo.  On p. 324 I had this reaction to one of Incanus/Mikko's many masterpieces in this genre:

Say, O master of the runo,
Of trochaic four-beat verses
Powerful in magic-working,
Can the skill of making runos
Be explainéd to the masses?
What rules are there for verse creation?
Rhymes? No, but alliteration,
That much clear to an observer;
Poetic pleonasms plenty
Very copiously describing
Heroes of the Kalevala,
Foemen, lovers, weapons, treasures,
"Kullervo, Kallervo's offspring
With his stockings of the bluest" --
Can this art be taught, I pray you,
Even to non-Finnish speakers,
Or is it a special talent
For the suomilainen only?

And I got answers!   :D

Incanus01
Oh it can be learned by people
other than the folk of Finland
as you do in your good verses
here and write with hand most able.

But I have to here admit it
follow not I all the rules that
would in runo-poems strictest
bind as to my mind it too much
ties you down and cripples poet's
thought in forms when muse is calling.

So I follow inner feelings
of the meter this trochaic
both in Finnish and in English
this I am not shamed to admit.
Then again in meters Ancient
I do fully all modes adhere.

It might seem like artless cop-out
but I write these things when able
at the moment typing am I
at my desk at work in hurry
so might strictest form of poem
my mind escape with its rulings.

-Mikko-

LooNEY_DAC
Rhyming is absurdly easy
When your language is inflected
So instead alliteration
Pleasing phrases, repetition
All of these mnemonic helpers
Tend to crop up in such poems
Homer's Dawn with rosy fingers
Is just one easy example
Just a quick thought for the moment
Not my aim to displace Mikko

Incanus01
Well said LooNey_DAC fan fellow
as inflected when is language
it not only rhymes allows but
easier it makes the writing
doth provide all kinds of means for
poetic these flighty wordings.
Meters of the ancient times and
much more in its form so lovely.
English I find hard to conform
to the meters of the Ancients
Virgil or to that of Homer
or those used by round faced Horace
lovelorn meters of Catullus.
Oftentimes they end up rhyming
in translations of these ditties
which to me a small annoyance
as my languge would bend better
to more closely meter follow
would more faithful be the wording
than what with the rhymes achieved is
in such languages as English.

But now I this have to confess
English for I have love lasting
so this is not meant to be a
vilifying comment nasty. ;)

Laufey
It is also said that sometimes
Certain people find it easy
Poetry to compose, and that
These are people with a hearing
So well tuned to sound of runo
That they know what words sound right and
Also spot the clumsy ones.

It is true there are some guidelines
For properly writing runo
Yet they're not quite absolute, no
Skillful poets break them sometimes
For their ear tells them what's suited
For the tale they wish to tell
Such a poet is our Mikko.

In His Footsteps

Reynir's feet leave rings in his wake.
Stuck in a lake without any boat.
This way and that Reynir's trail snakes,
Lalli has a little trouble keeping afloat.

In through the cloud Reynir has disappeared.
Lalli is stuck sinking with a wall in his face.
His path back to physicality remaining unclear.
Maybe he shouldn't have followed out to this place.

Meanwhile Reynir wanders around aimlessly,
Lost in his thoughts with no one to assist.
Nowhere to go, just alone, all out at sea.
Until a stranger appears from the mist.

------------------------------------------

Following the Fool (based on Walking on the Moon by Sting)

Little steps are what I take
Following the fool
I hope his trail don't break
Following the fool
I can't float forever
Following the fool
We can't go together
Following, following the fool

Walking back from your dream
Following the fool
Not as easy as it seems
Following the fool
Feet they hardly left a trail
Following the fool
I tried to follow but I failed
Following, following the fool

Some may say
I just drove that guy away
He strayed
And if it's the price I pay
Some say
Tomorrow's another day
I strayed
I may as well pay

Little steps are what I take
Following the fool
I hope his trail don't break
Following the fool
I can't float forever
Following the fool
Now the link is severed
Following, following the fool

Some may say
I just drove that guy away
He strayed
And if it's the price I pay
Some say
Tomorrow's another day
I strayed
I may as well pay

Keep me up, keep me up

“Only it’s Onni”
from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2whGEvy13Ag “Only the Lonely”
by Roy Orbison

There goes that
Reynir again
Across the
Dreaming Sea
Into another’s
Dreamspace
Only it’s Onni’s
Only it’s Onni’s

Only the Onni
Owns the dreamspace
Reynir’s in
Only it’s Onni
So soon squeals
Will begin

Onni is fearful
Of ev’rything
Reynir is cheerful
And so we sing

But only the Onni
Grows nigh
And shies
Only the Onni

There goes that
Reynir again
Across the
Dreaming Sea
Into another’s
Dreamspace
Only it’s Onni’s
Only it’s Onni’s

Only the Onni
Knows the sad state
That he’s in
Only the Onni
Knows he’ll cry
And cry again

Maybe next update
They’ll have a chat
That would be great
Let in the cat

And have him speak
In the updates
This week
Only it’s Onni

There goes that
Reynir again

It's night where I am, and I live near a great big bay full of wetlands.  This is for a fellow fan but with your indulgence (and theirs) I wanted to share it.

Hear the gentle bay tide lapping,
hear the gulls to seaward crying,
hear now distant fangirls squeeing,
reading pages, ink still drying:
nature and electrons mixing.

Whosoever sits in silence,
standing still in expectation,
finds night's mantle settled softly,
shrouding cares and fraught connection
in the dark of calm contentment.

Hear no anguished lamentation
in the English lamination
of this poet's peroration.
Far from some exsanguination,
hear, in this, serene reflection.
If life hands you Emil, make Emilonade!

It is time for another collected batch of poems:

Page 277

42. The Comment Goes Ever On and On

The comments go ever on and on
Down from where they first began.
Now far ahead comments have gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager clicks,
Until it's joined by comments more
Where many talks, discussions meet.
And whither then? Let's go explore.

The comments just go on and on
down from the first where they began
now far ahead the talk is gone
and I must follow if I can,
pursuing it with weary clicks,
until it joins some larger thread
and if it still goes on and on,
I think I'll head for nap and bed.

43. Lalli's Exorcism (Translation of Minna's original)
Lalli's Exorcism (translation)

Harken to me spirits faded
gone astray from paths of Tuoni
with speech pure I now beseech thee,
pray with words of sweetest cadence.

Wander ways away from this place,
journey farther ever from here,
corners to of unknown alleys
neighbourhoods of other dwellings

This I utter,
thus command I:
Silent be ye
folk most vexing.

Or I shall now all abjure thee
spirit mine incite from dream-state,
stone of blood will cast upon thee
curse outsiders to the shadows!

Page 307

44. Reynir just wants to serve

When you see glimpse of ruddy braid
you see it swirl and swerve
don't get alarmed, be not afraid,
Reynir just wants to serve.

He'll clean your boots, peel taters too
he'll be your servant tried and true,
icelandic shepherd coming through,
he's cooking food for the whole crew.

So if you have a task for braid,
a complex or a simple chore,
just call for Reynir unafraid,
he'll do the task and so much more!

Page 308

45. Dreaming
From the dreams are voices calling
unremebered whisper's thrill,
all your worries now are falling
when the sleep your mind shall fill.

Forth beyond the veil of dreaming,
quest upon its endless plane,
wondrous see all marvels gleaming
on horizons these arcane.

Secrets buried, past and present
all you shall encounter there,
future suns and moons in crescent
horrors foul and beauties fair.

Deeply slumber where the world ends,
where the angels, demons roam
where to dark the path at first bends,
where you fly through light from gloam.

When come morning is past dreaming
then return, come back to me,
worlds impossible these seeming
world this better make you see.

Page 311

46. Emil's Crashing Limerick

The shards spread all over the place
as Emil fell flat on his face.
When breaking glass door
his efforts were poor,
his success still total disgrace.

47. Treasure hunters

Through the mud and through the rain
through the silent world we dash,
we will spare no pain, no gain,
when through glass and wood we crash
seeking books, knowledge arcane,
so Torbjörn will have his cash!

Further still to world's dark end,
we shall travel fearless, fierce.
Where our paths our fates will bend,
be it laughter, be it tears,
secrets where we'll find all penned,
where printed, chiseled it appears.

On to foreign lands all still,
mysteries await us there,
books and parchment, pen and quill,
tomes of knowledge seek we rare,
treasure finest, endless thrill
is when past laid thus is bare.

Page 312

47. The Demolition Squad (Sigrun and Emil)

Rumble, clatter, boom and crash
earth will shake, ground will heave,
Demolition Squad will smash,
when all's leveled then they'll leave!

Fists, explosives, all brute force,
Emil uses, Sigrun too,
mayhem full these two endorse,
Demo Squad is coming through!

Books aspying there all day
in the wilds their travels made,
this fair warning I will say,
all crap buildings be afraid!

Smoke and ruin, fire's blaze
Emil, Sigrun both adore
be prepared to stand in daze
when they bring on total war!

Demolition Squad is proud,
Emil, Sigrun duo brave,
they arrive with mushroom cloud,
they are here the day to save!

Page 313

And this tiny death caused outrage.

As part of a poem-chain made by various Minnions:

48. A Dead Hamster

Sadness for a critter small
that perished all alone,
fate small that did it befall,
we fans could not condone.

49. Exploring the School

In this place, in this school
every cranny, every nook,
lies a treasure hidden, cool,
lookie, lookie it's a book!

Or in terror you might blanch
when you're stuck in crayonlanche!

Quickly flee to save your soul,
punch in crap wall escape hole!

Oh no wall against will stand,
when with bomb you'll exit land.

Fast grab kitties, skip and go,
save the cats from evil foe!

Tome
to take home
on H2O
Mikkel to show.

Page 314

50. Sigrun's Tremendous Find

Sigrun made tremendous find
it's round and glossy disc,
when plastic cover opened she
and took that awful risk.

"What is this now?" she thought and sighed
"What is this thing unknown?!!!"
"I know what that is!" Emil cried
"It's called a gramophone!"

"What devilry you mean my boy?
It doesn't look like book
Is this somekind of useless toy,
it has a funny look."

"Oh no, you have recording found"
exclaimed the boy in awe.
It used was once to capture sound,
it's first I ever saw."

"Bah just a discus full of sound,
what use is that to us
I think this mission's homeward bound
that thing's a useless fuss."

But fear not reader, disc was saved
from rotting, ruined school,
as Sigrun home it took engraved
and used as necklace cool.

Page 315

51. Oh dear, it's a deer!

Sigrun shiny discs then took,
and belittled this odd book,
that with Emil she had found,
that consisted of pure sound.

"But what's this?!!!" perked Emil's ears,
were awakened dreadful fears,
almost was the boy in tears,
ruffling noise when sudden hears.

Big like saucers were his eyes,
as the sight belief defies
in the rain a vision clear,
jumps to view a dashing deer.

Equal in its eye was fear
mirrored and surprise so sheer
as did from the gloom appear
shot through debris like a spear.

"Goodness gracious oh my dear
terrified me only deer."
Let boy out a silent cheer
when was nothing there to fear.

But might monster still be near,
all will to us made then clear,
when to us will page appear
new as next is Monday here!

Page 316

52. Fire in the eyes

See the fire in their eyes
see the flame of living things
in the monsters fire dies
lifeless dark to their eye brings.

Feel the fire of their eyes
feel gaze living on you lay
half-life dead eye testifies
soul in torment, spirit grey.

Sense the fire of the eyes
sense the living burning heart
torment deathless death denies
eyes grow dim, gaze doth depart.

Page 318

53. Reynir's Lucid Dreams

Tähtimeren tuolla puolen
mailla unen untuvilla
virta venhoa veteli
kaarnalaitaa lasketteli.

Kylmän virran viertehellä
purren pienen laitamalla
huojuvat punahivuset,
veden varjoisen varassa.

Siellä uinui, kussa keinui
miesi punapalmikkoinen
unen virran vietävänä
haaksessa sikiunosen.

Vieri virta, kuohui koski
alla taivon sysitumman
missä tähdet tuikahteli
ui jäät ympäri venosen.

Havahtuikse, katseleikse
nuori miesi kummissansa
virkkaeli, voihkaeli
ihmetteli unen usvaa.

Reynir nuori, paimenpoika
kaukomaasta Islannista,
kerroin kaksin kadoksissa
maassa väen vierahankin
Tanskan korpeen kadonnunna
unen peittoon unhottunut.

Translation

There beyond the starry ocean,
in the quiet lands of slumber,
currents pulled the skiff so tiny
carried on the boat bark-skinned.

By the strand of river hoary
on the side of craft so narrow
flowed the braid of reddest colour
in the waters shadow shrouded.

Slept he there and thence was carried
this young man with braid so ruddy
by the current where the dream flows
in the barge of deepest slumber.

Flowed the river, roared the rabids
under skies of pitch black twilight
where the stars were keenly shining
skiff surrounded by sheets icy.

When awakened, looked about him,
man this young so full of wonder,
thus he uttered, groaned aloud he
as he scanned the mists of dreaming.

Reynir youngster just a shepherd
come had from far land of Iceland
Doubly he was lost now truly
in the country of folk foreign,
first lost was in wilds of Denmark
now had vanished into dreaming.

54. Dream Boat (yes an homage to the Love Boat)

Dream, exciting and new
Come Aboard. We're expecting you.
Dream, slumber's sweetest reward.
Let it flow, it floats back to you.

Dream Boat soon will be making another run
The Dream Boat promises something for everyone
Set a course for adventure,
Your mind on a new dream land!

Dream won't hurt anymore
It's a the Braidy boy on a friendly shore.
Yes DREEEEAAAAAMMMMM! It's DREAAAAAAAMMM!(hey-ah!)

Dream Boat soon will be making another run
The Dream Boat promises something for everyone
Set a course for adventure,
Your mind on a new dreamland.

Dream won't hurt anymore
It's Lalli scout on a friendly shore.
It's DREAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMM! It's DREEAAAAAAAMMMMM! It's
DREAAMMMMM!
It's the DREAM Boat-ah! It's the DREAM Boat-ah!

55.A Dream Quest

Unen mailla usvaisilla
tuikkiessa tähtitilkun
alla öisen kirjokannen
taivon häilyvän hämärän
saapuu tietäjä tulinen
halki maailmojen monien
linnunradan tuolta puolen.

In the misty lands of dreaming
blanket where of stars is burning,
underneath the sphere of night skies
heavens in the twilight dusky
there arrives a shaman fiery
multitudes of worlds he crossing
from beyond the bird path flying.

Yössä päättymättömässä
tarkkasilmä kaukokatse
tietäjä tosinäkevä
lausuu loitsut laulaellen
sanat virkkovi väkevät
kutsui henget kuuluville
sielut paikalle pakotti.

In the night forever-endless
he of sharp eye, sight far-seeing
wise man of the truest sight will
spells he utter slowly chanting
speaks the words of greatest power
calls the spirits him to hearken
forced come souls to him so summoned.

Selvittihe suuret salat
näki näyt suurenmoiset
henget kertoi, sielut lauloi
alut, synnyt, luotteet lujat
unen mailla usvaisilla
tuikkiessa tähtitilkun.

Secrets great he thus uncovered
saw dream visions full of wonder
spirits spoke, the souls him singing
births, origins, spells of true names
in the misty lands of dreaming
blanket where of stars is burning.

Tulisilmä tietäjäinen
velho vahva ja väkevä
kun oli luottehet lukenut
salat kaikki tutkaellut
henget luotansa lähetti
sielut kotiin karkohutti.

He the wiseman fiery-eyed
wizard strong with will of iron
when has spell words comprehended
secrets when were all revealed
sent aways the spirits fleeing
souls banished back to their abode.

Kutsui kotiin mennäksensä
tiedot mukaan tuodaksensa
aurinkoisen elon maille
salateitä sielulinnun.
Loihe lausui luottehia
luojat kutsui rukouksin.

Home he to return now summoned
so could carry with him knowledge
back to sunlit land of living
soul bird paths along so secret.
Thus began to sing enchantment
prayed he to the gods creators.

Lausui loitsun, lausui toisen
lausui loitsun kolmannenki
kaikui kankaat unen mailla
moikui loitsut autioilla
kunnes Ukko taivahinen
kuuli ylinen jumala.

Spell he chanted, then another
finally spell third he uttered
echoed all the fields of dreaming
pealed in wastes the incantations
until hearkened heaven's Ukko
heard the pleas among gods highest.

Päästi lapsensa pahasta
tietäjänsä taipaleelta
kutsui kulkijan kotihin
sielulinnun leikahutti
sinisiiven suikahutti
velhon avuksi väkevän.

Thus delivered child from peril
rescued wiseman on his journey
home he then the pilgrim calling
sent the soul bird unto him and
most swift to him called the blue wing
so to help the wiseman mighty.

Nousi velho unen mailta
lensi lintunsa lovesta
havahtuikse horroksesta
näöltä unen väkevän
tiedot toipi muassansa
kertoakseen kansallensa.

Shaman rose from lands of dreaming
from dreamstate his bird ascended
then awaked this man dormant
from the keenest vision questing
knowledge secret brought he with him
that it might share with his people.

Page 320

56. Reynir Meets a Nightmare Hound

Reynir yksin unen mailla
venhossa sikiunosen
koiran kolkon kohtaeli
tapaeli hallin hurjan
kohtasipa kallokasvon
siitä suinpäin säikähtäen.

Reynir all alone in dreamscape
in the boat of deepest slumbers
met a hound of haggard presence
saw a dog of vicious visage
skull-faced creature he encountered
from that rose tremendous terror.

Varjokannen veden alle
senpä syöksyvi sylihin
karkuun kalmankoiran eestä
rakin raihnan raivon alta,
joka kallo kasvoinansa
kohti kalmaisna käveli.

Plunged he head on into waters
shadow surface's coldest embrace
so to escape gravehound dire
so to flee from mongrel threatening
leering skull that had for face and
who approached with form so deathly.

Ihme täytti poian mielen,
kun ei murru vedet virran
kun ei taivu pinta peilin.
Siinä painui polvillansa
kynnen verran vetten alle
Reynir velhojen sukua.

Wonder-filled was now the boy's mind
waters when of stream unbroken
left were, mirror of the surface.
There upon his knees he barely
length of finger nail was submerged
Reynir of the line of shamans.

Juoksi kuni tuuli Reynir
lensi päällä vetten tummain
jätti haaksen halleinensa
sumun sekaan suikahteli
unen usvan onkaloihin
kera kulki kauhuinensa,
poika paikalta pakeni.

Like the wind now ran this Reynir
almost flew above dark waters
left the boat with hound behind him
fleetly flew he into mists and
to the fog of dreams he vanished,
travelled he away in terror,
boy this fled from place of danger.

Page 321

57. Reynir's Flighty Limerick (aka Between a Hound and a Icelandic Sheep Dog Place)

When Reynir fled from the ghost hound
he thought was his escape plan sound
ran through the dream mist
but here is the twist
was he by another dog found.

"Slup!"

58. Flight of the Ruddy Braid

Water splashes underfoot
quick he skipping goes in flight
Reynir still by dreams off put
palpitating heart in fright.

Skims above the waters black
in the dreaming gone all wrong
how can he now reach light back
when the nightmare's cruel and strong.

Mists all twirling
'round him curling
in the cold and lightless night
visions flying
voices sighing
Reynir longs daylight so bright.

Eyes he closes ever reaching
watery pace feet they drum
until ends of dreaming reaching
where the horrors' end will come.

Stony shores about him closing
mountain's feet and boulders grey
in a landscape dark, imposing
he's escaped but lost his way.

Grey world glowing
waters flowing
Reynir glances 'round him meek
There appearing
dog's head rearing
feels the wet tongue on his cheek.

Page 322

59. Reynir's Dream Errantry Continueth

Kulki Reynir kangastuksiin
unen usvan ulapoilla
kotimaahan saapui poika
kuvajaiseen Islannista
näyt näki, kuvat koki
vahdin vainkin tuntemansa
lampaatpa kotinsa kedolta.

Wandered Reynir to mirages
on the seas of mists of dreaming
to his homeland boy appear'ed
to a picture of his Iceland
visions saw he, image witnessed
of a guard dog he knew back then
of the sheep of homely meadows.

Page 323

60.Reynir's Vision

Saw he visions of the dreaming
shepherd boy this young called Reynir
unbeknownst a shaman himself
worthy offspring of the wisemen.

There beyond his north dream meadows
lay a land of woods and mires
there amidst the forest vision
slept upon the ground youth Lalli.

Face familiar, form of dreamer
waking from world Reynir knew him
heavy horror from heart lifted
he a friend might have in dreaming.

Veil of dreamings thus he parted
from his visions, his own slumbers
stepped upon the lightless limit
separating dreams of wisemen.

Forth he went now lightly skipping
for his mind was then elated
to find ally unexpected
in the wide lands of the dreaming.

Näki näyt uneksunnan
Reynir nuori paimenpoika
tietäjäinen tietämättään
velhoin aimo aaluvainen

Unen kedon tuolla puolen
metsämaa tuo soinen seisoi
korven kuvan keskelläpä
uinui Lalli lavitsalla.

Kasvot, hahmon uneksujan
tunsi Reynir valveen mailta
katos kauhu sydämestä,
saisi kenties kuoman poika.

Unen harsot hajotteli
unet heitti, näkykuvat,
rajan reunaan synkän astui
velhounet erottavan.

Tuonne riensi riemuissansa
sillä nousi miehen mieli
koska löysi liittolaisen
uneksunnan laajan mailta.

Page 324

61. A Shaman's Dream Sanctuary

Halki metsän juoksi Reynir
nopsajalka paimenpoika
luokse Lallin läpi luhdan
poikki nevan ponnahteli.

Through the forest ran young Reynir
foot so fleet of this swift shepherd
through the swamp to meet with Lalli
fleetly skipped across the mire.

Juuttui melkein saapas suohon
kenkä turpeisiin katosi
mutta jalka, järki nopsa
säästi suohon suistumasta.

Almost into swamp sank his boot
footwear almost lost to fenland
but foot swift and mind so agile
end in quagmire both prevented.

Sinne saapui pitkospuita
missä miesi tuo makasi
Lalli nukkui lavitsalla
rauhassa sikiunosen.

There he came on wooden walkways
where lay on the ground the youngster
slept on wooden bed there Lalli
in the peace of deepest slumbers.

62. Honouring Haikus

Haiku is truly
good poetic expression
has its own beauty.

I indeed like it
for it in short spaces can
distill great wisdom.

Page 325

63. A Wizardly Meeting

Reynir happy to have found him
greeted boy with face familiar
asked if he could Lalli join there
in the sanctum of scout's mage dream.

Reynir pojan tavatessa
kasvot tutut tervehtihe
kyselihe Lallin luokse
velhouneen voisko tulla?

First all baffled was this young boy
then annoyed, indignant Lalli
rose as quick as bolt of lightning
when boy asked to join him.

Alkuun heti hämmästyikse
raivostuikse sitten Lalli,
nopsaan kuni ukonnuoli
pystyyn pyynnöstä kavahti.

With hand pointed to swamp waters
as the redbraid stood on limit
of his mage home, his dream haven
banished him with single gesture.

Käsi kohti kohos' vettä
punapaulan rajan luota
velhounen, turvapaikan
karkottihe elehellä.

"Get out!" bellowed then young Lalli.
Feel the waters come all gushing
did redbraided shepherd Reynir
as by magicks was he belted,
waters all about him struck as
sprang forth Lalli's wizard powers.

"Häivy heti!" huusi Lalli.
Tunsi veden virran lyövän
punapaula paimen Reynir
taiat, loitsut päälle hyökyi
vedet ympäril' yleni,
syöksyi Lallin velhovoimat.

Page 326

64.Lalli's Shock and Awe Limerick

When Reynir came calling one dream
and wanted to be on his team
gave Lalli him flick
with a wizardly stick
methinks was this way too extreme.

65. Lalli's Lashing Defense

Nousi juuret, oksat maasta,
suosta syöksi kärhet männyn
yli kiersi Lallin ylle
vaipaksi velhon väkevän.

Ihmetellen katsoi Reynir
oksaverkon varjoihinki
silloin kääntyi juurenkärjet
ojentuikse oksain kädet.

Iski juuri punapaulaa,
paukahutti poskellensa
siitäpä poika pakeni
suruissansa säntäeli.

Surullisna lähti Reynir
kun ei kuomaa tavannunna,
kumppalia kohdannunna,
ulos unen uksen kautta.

Kissansilmä, nuori Lalli
säikähtynyt velhoveljyt,
karkottihe kaarnakuoren
silmäellen lähteväistä.

Seurasipa perässänsä
unen uksen tuolle puolen
missä unen valtakuntaan
kulki Reynir punapaula.

Utelias oli Lalli
kuinka poika pääsi sinne
mistä oli tullut hälle
unen turvaan tuttavaksi.

Kuni kissa pehmyttassu,
kulki Lalli jäljessänsä
salavihkaa unen usviin
perään poian surumielen.

Translation:

Rose roots, breached the branches dark earth
sprung forth pine tops from the mire
all about they flew on Lalli
so to cloak the wizard doughty.

Stared in wonder boy young Reynir
to the shadows of web branching
but then unfurled roots so swiftly
were uncurled the fingers wooden.

Struck these roots the redbraid sudden
gave a sting upon his cheek and
thus the lad fled from the dreaming
sorrowful with mind dashed from there.

Sorrowing left Reynri wand'ring
when he had not met a friend there,
did not come across companion,
through the door of dream he travelled.

Oh the cat-eyed young man Lalli,
shaman brother still bewildered,
barrier of bark he banished
looked upon the boy now leaving.

Thus he followed the lad leaving
there beyond the door of dreaming
where to further realms of slumber
wandered Reynir of the red braid.

Curious was then young Lalli
of how had the boy just entered
whence had come to him this fellow
as companion to dream haven.

Like a soft pawed cat all quiet
after went him then young Lalli
to the mists of dream tread softly
sorrow-sighing boy he followed.

Page 327

66. Lalli Follows Reynir into the Dreams

Unen usviin juoksi Lalli
perään poian punapaulan
vetten yli kiirehtien
jäljissä punahivusen.

Eipä veteen vajonnutkaan
eipä uneen upponnutkaan
jäljissä velhon väkevän
vaeltajan tuiki kumman.

Usviin unen matkasivat
Lalli sekä paimen Reynir
vaan jo sumut nielaisivat
harhailevan punapaulan.

Seinän lailla tuli vastaan
muuri unen tyhjyydessä
esti matkan tuolle puolen
kissansilmän nuoren Lallin.

Kulki Reynir edelleenkin
usvain läpi harhaellen
tiestään täysin tiedotonna
matkan päänsä hukannunna.

Siellä tähtivainioilla
sumuisilla tantereilla
velhon toisen tapaeli
oli Onni nimenänsä.

Ihmetteli molemmaiset
kummasteli kumpainenkin
toinen toista tutkaeli
läpi kaiken unen usvan.

To the mists of dream ran Lalli
after boy with reddest braid and
over waters fleetly flying
in the footsteps of the redhair.

And he didn't sink to waters
was not under dream he drowned
in the mighty shaman's footfalls
of this unknown stranger wand'ring.

To the mists of dream they travelled
Lalli and this shepherd Reynir
but by vapours soon was swallowed
this boy errant redbraid wand'ring.

Like a wall came into being
barrier in dark of dreaming
passage now through from him thwarted
of the cat-eyed young man Lalli.

Walked he on this young boy Reynir
through the mist and cloud he errant
path who did not know on travels
who had lost his ways in dreaming.

There in wider fields of starlight
on the misty lands and meadows
met another brother wizard
wiseman who was Onni nam'ed.

Wonder both men in the dreaming
startled each was by encounter
when each other were then peering
through the fog of dreams enfolding.
Instrue praeceptis animum, ne discere cessa.
Nam sine doctrina vita est quasi mortis imago.

Arm your mind with teachings, do not stop learning.
For without learning life is but an image of death.
