There's also the Night Owl (Watchmen) for Onni, but that has the mask problem...
Which Nite Owl do you have a "mask problem" with, Mason or Dreiberg?

There also are Onnis statements a la "I belong to the forest", of course. I suppose you wouldn't want to make him into an Ent, or Groot, but there are other options ...

Seriously tho, Onni is Batman. His parents were killed and therefore he broods and fights evil, the form of an animal that can fly.

The same would apply to Lalli too (except for the flying animal), but he’s already sorted. (And Silver Lalli is a much better match for Phoemil than Batlalli would be).

Whoa, Lalli didn't just level up, he bulked up! He'll never fit into those boots now.

Also, Night Owl II (Dreiberg) is totally a Batman parody.

(And I am fine with a hairy prompt, but I am so behind already that it probably doesn't matter...)

On the other hand, Silver Lalli wields the power of the entire universe. He can make the boots fit, if he (or Emil) want to!

You are not “behind”, this is not a chore :) If you like a prompt, go for it, if not (or don’t have time or energy) then no prob

Thanks, JoB! Always providing fascinating links! I didn't know the Mason version. TBH my knowledge of the Watchman is limited to the later graphic novels (that I owned before lending them to someone...) and the movie. So I was only aware of the Dreiberg version of Night Owl.

And the link to the "other options" is so interesting! I'm seriously considering making an "El Seed" version of Onni... :D

Now about the mask... The problem is that sometimes masked heroes identity relies mostly on their masks, but using them will hide the face of our character.
Below you can see Onni, and Night Owl, and Onni as Night Owl... Where there's little Onni to be seen. If you take out the googles there's a bit more Onni, but a lot less Night Owl.

That would be the case of Daredevil, Cyclops and others. Of course that doesn't happen with all masked characters. Batman or Spiderman's uniforms, for instance, are so characteristic that even without a mask you know who they are.

Anyway, I want to complete this series, but had been terribly busy these days. I hope to have the next one this weekend, and meanwhile I'll think about beards... :)

I went with the alternate meaning of beard. Sorry. At least it's not Emilalli...

Spoiler: show
"Why is the grump extra gloomy today?" asked Sigrun, with an air of curiosity rather than concern. "Isn't he looking forward to tonight's celebration?”

Mikkel followed her gaze across the room. She was right: the expression on Onni’s face was the darkest it had been since… Since his battle with the Kade.

“Well…” he said. “He did once tell me that he finds parties frivolous.”

“It’s not just any party, though! It’s in our honour! Honour is never frivolous. And it’s in his own country, the absolutely top place to be honoured in. He’ll get a chance to meet his boring old schoolteachers and go, ‘Ha! You were wrong! Look at me now!’”

Mikkel considered explaining that, based on what he knew of Onni’s childhood, his boring old teachers were likely all dead, but Lalli’s quiet presence gave him pause. Lalli didn’t look like he was listening, but… Mikkel sighed, and restricted himself to, “I do not think his teachers will be there.”

“You know what I mean! Also, there definitely will be booze. Free booze, even. I don’t understand what the problem could be.”

“Very well,” said Mikkel. “I will ask him.”

“He won’t tell you.”

Ah! So Lalli had been listening, after all. “Why?” Mikkel turned to him. “Is it something embarrassing?”

“No. Well, maybe to him.” Lalli shrugged. “But I can tell you. He will hate the party because he hates it when people try to have babies with him."

"Try to have babies?" Sigrun frowned. "You mean, like, flirt with him? Who doesn't like that? And even if he somehow doesn't, he's got a perfect excuse: he can just tell the over-enthusiastic flirts that he's with Reynir."

Lalli shook his head. "Reynir doesn't count.”

Mikkel had to smile. "Really, Lalli. I thought you were done with pretending to dislike Reynir."

"Reynir doesn't count because he can't have babies. Onni is a good mage, so people want him to make some."

"Ah, I get it!" Sigrun slammed her hand down on the table. "Some people in Norway are just the same, all, 'You're immune and good at stuff, have babies.' It's very easy to make suggestions like that, telling someone else to do the hard work. I just ignore them."

"Of course you do," said Mikkel. “But not everyone is– Wait, Lalli, what about you? You’re a mage too, and immune besides. Aren’t you worried about people trying to have babies with you?”

“No.”

“Why not?” Sigrun asked. “No, wait, I bet I know. Is it because you like to spend parties under the food table, growling at strangers?”

“Come on, Sigrun,” said Mikkel. “He doesn’t really do that anymore.”

Lalli’s only response was a look, which, while appearing completely neutral, managed to convince Mikkel that a return to his old, feral ways for the evening was very much on the table. Or, rather, under it.

“In any case,” said Sigrun, waving a dismissive hand, ”our smallest mage doesn’t mind… but the medium-sized one does. Mikkel, it is our duty to protect our teammate from these aggressive baby-havers! Any ideas?”

Mikkel did have one, amusing, idea. “We could ask Reynir to wear a dress. He’d definitely do it, if he thought it would help.”

“How does that help?” asked Lalli. “People know Reynir is a man. To stop the baby-making, Onni would have to go with a woman.”

“She’d have to be a strong woman, I suppose,” said Mikkel. “One who could easily chase off the others?”

Lalli nodded.

“If only…” Mikkel smirked. “If only we knew one,”

“We do!” Sigrun leapt up. “Me!”

Lalli had jerked back at the sudden motion, blinking, but offered no commentary, so it was left to Mikkel to say, “Why, Sigrun, what a splendid idea!”

“That’s settled then,” said Sigrun with a grin. “Now, how should I dress? I will need something that says both ‘I can make babies’ and ‘I can kick your ass’.”

“So, pretty much anything, then?” asked Mikkel.

“Yeah…” said Sigrun thoughtfully. “Now, why I go sort all that out… Which of you two is going to delight the grump by telling him he has a date?”

AUTHOR'S NOTES
The story is stupid, but it expresses some ideas about what we have sometimes discussed here: the whole 'pressure to have babies' thing.
My headcanon would be that this differs a lot by location, even within a country, but that e.g., Finland is in general more community-oriented than, say, Norway. So Onni would get more pressure than Sigrun would for that reason, even though she's immune. And he'd be more likely to feel said pressure.
Lalli, well, he looks better than Onni on paper, but I think his weirdness might work against him.
And we know that Iceland is breeding for immunity, so I think Reynir is not considered a top candidate, either.
Sweden, hmm, I'm not sure about.

I love this.. I did not know the alternative meaning of Beard...

But hey, don't we need a new prompt?

I am feeling a bit like I should stop writing nothing but little dialogue-heavy snippets of the crew interacting. They're the simplest thing for me, but also a little pointless.

They are fun and often sweet and keep us entertained. So if you are ok with writing them, keep them coming! Of course if you are actually fed up, it’s not a duty :) But from the audience viewpoint, there’s nothing wrong with them!

I tried to find a picture of the partially braided beard style I imagine Reynir would have, but only got photos of Jason Momoa. Which in itself is a good thing, but not very Reynir-esque. I also learned that the amount of beard Admiral Olsen has is unrealistic. It’s either one thick braid or two thin ones. Unless he’s a dwarf.

Anyways here’s something about braids.

Spoiler: show

The trip back from Iceland was long and tiring. But finally, Onni was home. At last, he’d get to withdraw into his own house and have a good night’s sleep! The trip had been interesting, and important, but home was…

“Hey! Uncle Onni! You are back!” Lumi was running towards him. “How was Iceland? Did you see any sea beasts? How many spirits did you…”
“Lumi, please. Let him come in first!” Emil was standing on the doorway to the big house and beckoning expectantly.

Onni sighed. Well, maybe it was easier, to get this over with right now. He stepped into the great room of the house where most of the big family lived.

While Lumi was sitting Onni down at the table and calling for her mums and everybody that Onni was back, Emil went to fetch Lalli who was sleeping after a night shift.

“Mrhmph! Couldn’t this have waited? He’s going to be home tomorrow too.” Lalli was grumbling when Emil ushered him into the family room.

“No, I don’t think so. Onni has something important to share!”
“He does?”
“I do?”
“Go on! Tell all about it!” The kids were impatient.
“Ok, so, yes, it was a good trip. We learned a lot. I met some of the volcanic spirits, they are interesting. And yeah, so. Good trip.”
“And?” Emil was grinning knowingly.
“And what? It was a breakthrough. Too bad you can’t see them, you’d like them as they are basically fire.”
“I mean your news.”
“My news?”
“Yes. Your News. Your and Reynir’s news, to be exact.”

“My. Um.” Onni was blushing. “So, me and Reynir, we have…”
Emil was gesturing in a way that clearly meant “do go on”
“Yes, so, we have come to an understanding, so to say.”
“Finally.” Lalli blurted matter-of-factly.
“What do you mean?”
“You have been so stupid for many years. It’s time you do the sensible thing.”

“What are you talking about? I want to know more about the fire spirits” Lumi complained.

“Your uncle here” Emil was smiling widely “has finally faced the music, and danced to it. With the love of his life, Reynir.”
“Ooo!” Lumi’s eyes widened with delight, while Onni looked like he was hoping he had fallen into the volcano they had been studying.

“Well, yes. You are right. But how did you know? I asked him to not tell you while I was on the way.”

“I may not be very good understanding people, but I do understand hair.” Emil explained “And I know with certainty you never do anything to yours. So, the moment I saw the braids on your head, I knew what must have happened.” Instinctively, Onni touched his hair, where the stave-painted pearls rested just like Reynir had weaved them in.

“And for what’s it worth, I’m happy for you. And your hair. Trust me, anything is better than that mullet of yours. Even this mess of braids.”

Here’s also an article showing the often striking differences some facial hair can make. These are just some celebrities including, of course, Jason, but I was surprised, maybe you will be too.

The term I have encountered for that phenomenon is ‘bonnet’, presumably because a bonnet is something that covers your head. In earlier English, bonnet was also used for somebody hiding another person, for example if a sailor had smuggled his female wife or girlfriend onto an all-male ship, and concealed the extra person’s food needs under cover of being extra hungry, or if someone was concealing a criminal or army deserter in their house, they would get visitors to the house to bring in such supplies as the fugitive needed, thus they all became his ‘bonnets’. But nowadays I have heard it more often used in the context you use ‘beard’, for an apparent partner of the socially accepted gender.

Ha, Jitter! Also, nice to see you fill in the gaps in your series. Although, really, one doesn't have to be a hair-bender like Emil to realize that braids on Onni mean something...

When I said I wasn't sure about these vignettes I write, I want looking for praise. I'm just thinking maybe I should try to mix it up a little. Write something with no dialogue, step away from close third-person POV, that sort of thing.

And don't we still need a prompt?
