Uhhh... for those of us who don't speak the tongues of the Known World... what's it about?

Et rottent land, hvor nisser bor.
Svensker er en skam, for oss som bor i nord.
Vi overtar jo alt de har,
og det de har er volvo og skabb.

Um... "A rotten land full of boring trolls"?  "Swedes are always committing scams"?  "They drive here and there in their Volvos and have scabs"?  ;)

A rotten country where gnomes live
Swedes are a shame for us living in the North
We take over/inherit all they own
and what they have is Volvo and scabs.

Its a jolly old* song about a Norwegian's strong feelings for our eastern brothers. Quite tongue in cheek.

Spoiler: Translation • show

Sandwiches, and sweet brother (term for swedes),
I'm enjoying TV1 and TV2.
I'm never going home again, here I want to live.
So happy, in Sweden!

I can do nothing, I'm a zero.
But what does it matter,
here I sell like gold.
Here they know nothing about talent,
So happy in Sweden!

Swedish devil, has no taste in music, they buy anything!
Low brows, acnes yellow and blue. Oh what a people!

A rotten country, where gnomes live.
Swedes are a shame for us who live in the north.
We get everything they have,
and what they have is Volvo and scabies.

I don't want to see them, they are a plague.
I'll send them to Reykjavik, like the Shetland horses.
And once they are far away,
I'm happy in Sweden!

Swedish devil doesn't have the right to anything, they are very stupid.
Low brows, acnes yellow and blue. Oh what a people!

HELLO have some undertale soundtracks, they are excellent
(which is a good thing, because if you, like me, get stuck with all the boss fights, at least you have cool music)

you'll know where to find me.

I've been listening to lots of vaguely sinister string music lately. Have some Shostakovich. Strings quartet no.8 in C minor, movement II

Aaaaaaaah! I love Shostakovitch!!!! He wrote a sonata for viola that is beautiful and creepy and angsty and I have it and hope one day to be able to play it. He had the saddest life though. He used to sit outside his house at night so that when the police from the soviet union came for him they wouldn't wake his family taking him away. And when he had success in his music, Stalin would denounce it, and force the papers to give him horrible reviews.

Oh wow, I had no idea. That is sad. (Perhaps I should look up more about this guy...) What's the title of that viola sonata that you like?

I kinda used to be obsessed with Shostakovich so I know random things about his life... actually it was more of an all around classical music obsession. I know random details about most of the composers, such as Vivaldi was a priest and had asthma :D

Here is the sonata:

It's really long but I highly recommend you give it a listen, or at least the first movement. It's so beautifully eerie and I loooooove it. Especially the part with the tremolos *shivers*

I believe I have pictures of the sheet music somewhere.... *searches*
Yes! Here! It starts of pretty tame, I can do all this first bit pretty easily.

Then you open it up and it's like oh god why

I mean. Octaves. And triple stops. And treble clef. ALL AT ONCE.

(snop)

I've only recently started taking some cautious steps around classical, so there's a lot about it in general that's new to me. : D As for that Shostakovich sonata - "creepily eerie" is right; I'm glad that I had time to listen to the whole thing. It's great! (Also wow, that sheet music. I can see what you mean by 'oh god why'.)

Off that subject-
I made the mistake of uttering the phrase "I'm not the world's most masculine man" last night, and Lola by The Kinks has been stuck in my head ever since....

Well, that's flattering. I don't get the part about sending them to Reykjavik like a Shetland-pony though.
I seem to remember that Icelandic horses, once they left Iceland, are not allowed back onto the island, ever. Maybe announcing that you'll send them Shetland ponies is akin to threatening that you'll ruin the bloodline forever ... ?
