Ah, if only! I've only been able to make Eiswein once, when I lived in the Snowies, from a Chardonnay grape vine. It was wonderful. Haven't been able to afford to buy the stuff for years.

These grapes here are mostly a very old German sultana vine, an ancient pre-phylloxera Shiraz grape which I grew from a cutting from a friend's vineyard, and a delicious tiny black grape of which I have never been able to find out the name. If indeed it has one. I grew it from a piece I salvaged from a vine that was growing on the fence of an early-settler house that was being demolished at Mount Barker, and have never seen a vine quite like it. It's closest to a Zante currant, but not the same - the fruit is a little smaller and has a much stronger flavour. It dries beautifully to tiny sweet currants, is delicious eaten fresh and makes a good dessert wine. I'm trying to propagate it and spread it about.

I have other vines, but none that fruited this year.

Noodly: SectoBoss is near Manchester, and said his place was up high. Gwenno was visiting him but I think has gone back to Wales? There was something about it in the Minnion Meetups thread?

Modifying my own forecast: we were forecast 39C, but already 37C at noon. However, cloud is starting to come in so temp may not rise much further.....

Yup, at home and doing fine. The storm died down towards the afternoon, as always the Hellisheiði mountain area protected Reykjavík. The east and north had worse time of it, far as I know, but the town I work at fared ok (just some stuff got blown around that wasn't tied down).

Thanks to... whatever travel wackiness is going on today, I get another day visiting family. Hopefully everything will work out well tomorrow and I'll get to go home. I hear there is a small pile of packages waiting for me and I'm eager to get to them.

Of course, Yuuago, for you it's earlier. Here we are 20 minutes into the New Year. I spent the actual changeover moment having a lengthy telephone conversation with my ancient aunt, while we both watched the Sydney fireworks on television - one of the few times my television set is turned on. Neither of us went out to party, since I'm at home looking after somewhat disabled husband, and my ancient aunt is ancient, well past her century and not very mobile, but still very sharp. She's over on the East Coast so her New Year is half an hour earlier than mine. Nice way to see the New Year in, and so long as I'm alive to enjoy the future, I intend to.
