To contribute something constructive to this conversation: fingernails.
Preferrably hard, sharp and unbreakable (length optional as long as not too short). They always work for me.

I've also heard that elbows are really effective.

I won't use my fingernails.  It would be shameful and disrupt my playing.
Feel free to PM.

*Looks at own chewed fingernails*

You know, there is a reason why I never learned how to play the guitar. I'm going to put the blame on my fingernails.

If you can train yourself to only chew the left hand you're golden  ;)

I accept that, it's understandable.

So no actual fighting, just fleeing strategically redistributing our war efforts in time and space. Apparently the best self defense technique for these cases is outting a finger in your nose.

Well, young Tuge, who showed courage helping two girls younger than her paid with her live for this effort recently. It really sadens me that someone who helps others being threatened is hit afterwards by the bullying persons. As I read into the case, it shows that even showing courage with reason, drawing other persons in for help, will sometimes pay of bitterly. They will put the machines of during the next days, because her brains got injured so bad she is diagnosed brain dead.

I guess either boredom or nervousity. Probably the former.
What I don't understand however is, why not doing something else instead?
*has obviously never had the urge to chew on nails, inspite of whatever reasons there could be*

insert unbelievably horrible story
o_O
*had been bullied herself, didn't know it could go that far, though*
(well, I have been shoved headfirst into a wall before, but got away without those guys interfering my way home further, reported it the next day in school and said guys refrained from doing anything like that again, to me at least)

People usually chew their nails while doing something else, I think.

How can they do anything with their hands (partially) in their mouth?

if interested, I can give you the long version.

Short: It is possible chewing your nails off while writing. How? Don't know, maybe one of my kids while finally explain to me. Why? Often it is a reaction to something bothering you (boredom is often the first symptom to be spottet, in most cases there is something lying beneath).

For the horrible story: It has been in the local Hassian Media (as it happened only recently in Offenbach). On the other hand, bad stuff happens always somewhere and at most times even something worse than you really are able to imagine is happening at the same time.

??? Aha. Interesting.

Well, I should know that. It's just that appearantly my brain connected the case to my own particular experiences and, well, children, and sorted it under "unbelievable" for the reason that in that context it was something new for me.

Actually I think it is good if people are showing emotional reactions (being not too far out of reason) to events taking place. May that be of personal interferrence, memories or just the ability for being empathic. During the last year I somewhat blunted emotionally. But this really touched a nerve besides the daily fights at school. Today a nine year old attacked my colleague so bad that we had to move all kids into a different classroom. When we were finaly able to come back, he had destroyed several exercise books, parts of the desk and had kicked some of the other kid's school bags through the room. My colleague was like in a shock state when finally an educator came to pick the kid up. She needed to be soothed like the kids often have to be cared for. And the boy is not to be blamed alone...
