dmeck7755, I'm so excited for you that you're wanting to take up painting and drawing again!
I've been drawing my whole life, and thankfully my day job is in the graphic design field, so I get to keep my skills up.
For any kind of project where I don't have the time to let paint to dry, I draw/paint digitally. My go-to program is actually
Clip Studio Paint, the same program that Minna uses. Seeing her work put me onto it years ago, and it's great! It can be had for around $50. There's a more complicated version with a bunch of webtoon and animation-related features that's more expensive, but I'm using the cheaper version and it has everything I need for illustration.
Clip Studio Paint websiteSince you have an iPad, the obvious choice would be
Procreate. I've seen some of the most beautiful digital paintings made with this program, and it's apparently super-easy to use. If I used Mac products, I would have this program right now! The basic version is free, and I've seen prices for the pro version that are between $2 and $10. Given the work I've seen, I am SURE it's worth it!
Procreate websiteA free digital drawing app that I've used in the past is one called
Krita. This app has many tools that directly mimic physical art tools - pens, markers, brushes, sponges, odd textures, etc. I recommend this one highly as well. Procreate may be easier to learn (from what I hear), but Krita has many of the same functions as Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop, at least as far as drawing/painting goes.
Krita websiteI wish you the best of luck in your rediscovered hobby! We would be
thrilled to see any of the work you're doing in the forum's art museum!
