...and one more thing... Dmeck's entry made me think about an SSSS-based musical. I feel like this must have been covered in fanworks already... but even so, perhaps one could use something along those lines in a future prompt? (I was thinking about something like asking people to write an introductory song for a character--an "I want" song--or an action song describing an event, or a romantic song like dmeck's. But other interpretations are possible.)

For the record, I think that in my musical Lalli would be introduced using a song that is just humming. In Polish that type of song is called a mruczando, which seems appropriate.

Lovely idea, Tehta! That can be next week's prompt. And your idea for Lalli is perfect!

My only problem is I don't know much anything about music notation, so all I can do is write the lyrics, and try to make them sound good in my head. :)

Mruczando would suit Lalli! Back in the early days of the fandom there was talk of a musical, with several people actually composing words and music. LooNEY_DAC composed a lot of filk for the comic, which is in Archive, Nellie made sonnets, and Adge reframed many chapters in the form of the Nordic saga. There were others including some who wrote lovely music. Sorry, my memory fails as to details! I have myself written a drinking song for Sigrun, and there were certainly others who wrote songs or music. Well worth a Forum dive.

And not everybody is a natural hugger. I will hug immediate family, old and valued friends, coweth companions (including one who is generally touch-averse but doesn’t mind me) and my partners, but generally don’t like it from random people. Plus if somebody is obviously distressed and ‘needs a hug’ I am willing to help. But many people are naturally solitary, or really need their space. I can imagine Ensi as such a person, and I expect that the sensitivity that often goes with having magic would make things worse as far as being touched is concerned.

Tehta, you are right, Tuuri would know. But the final line is what Reynir says. He doesn’t know. I was debating whether to add some sort of ”Uh, that sounds nice I guess” from Tuuri or not, but decided to leave Reynir in his happy illusion for now.

The prompt for next week is Musical.

I have at least one drinking song somewhere here, probably in the poetry thread, if nothing else I’ll try to find it.

Musical... Ok, in this show the Known-World Famous band "Not-So-Silent Explorers" will perform several covers of songs that at some time before the Rash were big hits.

Each song is adapted for a different member. So let's welcome the first one, by Lalli "Bob Smith" Hotakainen!  :lalli: :headbang:

I asked him why he chose this song. He just said it reminds him a nightmare he sometimes has...

So here goes (under spoilers to save space) the lyrics for Lalli's version of "A Forest":

Spoiler: show
Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find Emil
While you can

Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes

I hear his voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark

I hear their voices
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees

Into the trees

Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone

Emil was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again and again...

And the musical continues with a well-known battle scene. Here the song was chosen, and adapted, by no other than our vocalist, the most outstanding Sigrun "Florence" Eide.  :sigrun: :headbang:

She says it's based on her personal experiences... Well, we can believe that.

So here it goes (under spoilers to save space) the lyrics for a song called... hum... "Shake It Out"? Yes, that's it. Sigrun called it "Shoot It Out"...

Spoiler: show
Shadows collect like old fiends
Here to relive their darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghosts come out to play

And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some parts of myself
I like to keep my guns drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

And we've been fools and we've been blind
We can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
We're always dragging that horse around

All of his questions, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my guns drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn

Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to fence with a devil on your back
So shoot him off, oh whoa

And I am done with that graceless wight
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
'Cause I like to keep my guns drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to fence with a devil on your back
So shoot him off, oh whoa

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine rumble but it's left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn

Oh whoa, oh whoa...

And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark aimed right at his throat
'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil by me
Looking for heaven, found the devil by me
Well what the hell I'm not gonna let it happen to me, yeah

Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to fence with a devil on your back
So shoot him off, oh whoa

Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
Shoot it out, shoot it out, shoot  it out, shoot it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to fence with a devil on your back
So shoot him off, oh whoa

(And here is the link for the longer, and amazing*, live version. )

Thanks Róisín and Dmeck!

And the musical continues, with a scene depicting that long chase endured by our friends, where Emil, after being saved by Lalli, had to drag him until they finally found their way to the outpost on the shore to meet the rest of the team.

So welcome our dear Emil "Bono" Vaterstrom's heartfelt performance of "With or Without You"

Spoiler: show
See no light shine in your eyes
Hear your voice inside my mind
I'll wait for you
Oh brave stand, oh twist of fate
Locked in dreams, you make me wait
And I won't leave without you
With or without you
With or without you

Through this storm, we'll reach the shore
You gave it all but I want more
And I'll keep watch over you

With or without you
With or without you, ah, ah
I can't live
With or without you

And you gave yourself away
And you gave yourself away
And you gave
And you gave
And you gave yourself away

My hands are tired
They want food, but got me with
All things to win and
Nothing I can lose

And I'll give myself today
And I'll give myself today
And I'll give
And I'll give
And I'll give myself today

With or without you
With or without you, oh
I can't live
With or without you

Oh, oh
Oh, oh

With or without you
With or without you, oh
I will live
Forever with you

Forever with you

(and here's one live version. It's always a pleasure to see the U2 on stage  8) )

for Musical
https://archiveofourown.org/works/45121762/chapters/115193398

I liked how PhantomGrimalkin described Onni singing the runos in the story Pushing the River. I hope they do not mind a little "borrowing"

I wrote something, as I have absolutely no musical ability.

When I was young in the 7th grade, we were supposed to sing in the choir (It was something the 7th grade did).

After a few "practices", one of the nuns came over to me and said ,"You can 'mouth' the words dear.  You do not need to sing"  I was the only 7th grader to be excused from choir :)

Many years later, I was part of a Medieval recreation group.  One of the members was a music teacher and she used to teach us songs and such.  We received an invite to sing at the local Public radio station.  She told me not to go because she wanted us to sound good.  I do not really sing any more, and music is just a thing.  I can appreciate other people who get joy from it though.  It just is not a motivator for me...

When I was somewhere around 7th grade or so, my school put on the musical Oliver. I was fairly good in drama, and was given the part of Mrs. Bumble.

Except that when it came to singing instead of speaking, they had me mouth the words while another student sang the part from behind the curtains.

When we got to the first word of Mrs. Bumble's first song, and her voice came out instead of mine, the entire school burst out laughing. I also managed to think it was funny, at the time. In retrospect, not so much.

I love to sing and have done a lot of it, mostly folk music, though I did get involved in Gilbert and Sullivan performances as a teen and young adult. My natural voice is a rough contralto, good for folk music and magic, but not refined enough for bel canto.

I really liked the story, dmeck!

So Onni "was excited to finally be able to help." He may have some things in common with Reynir, after all... And what a great ending! He truly belongs to the forest!

I also found the way they treated you years ago really inappropriate. You may not have a beautiful voice, many don't, but it's not right to tell a kid not to sing at all, or put that kid appart because there would be a public performance. Anyway I hope those things were said in a way that didn't leave you feeling sad or discriminated.

Well, speaking about singing, the next scene of the musical features a young, naive man running around the place, always trying to help people. But they stubbornly refuse, leaving him increasingly frustrated.... The song, called Help!, comes from a group called something... bugs? Oh, no, it's Beatles! And it was adapted by our Reynir "John" Arnason, that also sings it using some fancy round sunglasses...  8) :reynir:  :headbang:

Spoiler: show
Help
I need somebody to
(Help) yes, just anybody to
(Help) you know I need someone to
(Help)

When I was younger, so much younger than today
(I never miss) I never missed anybody to help in any way
(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone)
I'm not so self-assured
(And now I find) now I find I've changed my mind
I'm knocking at all doors

Help you if I can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help get your feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please let me?

And now my life is changing in oh so many ways
My utility seems to vanish in a haze
Every now and then I feel so insecure
I know I need to help you like I've never done before

Help you if I can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help get your feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please let me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today
(I never miss) I never missed anybody to help in any way
(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone)

Help you if I can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help get your feet back on the ground

Let me, let me, ooh

And the live version  ;D

Grey, these are very clever! (And pretty much what I imagined, too!)
My favorite has to be Sigrun. Really, I can just see her. (But the image of Reynir in those glasses won't leave me either.)

I though it was great at the time also, as i got to go home earlier than the others...

I really don't have an affinity with music.  If i heard something and wanted to repeat it to another (In the case of asking what song is this?)  I cannot.  I truly cannot reproduce music.  In its place i have exceptional color vision though :)

So you lose something and you gain something :)
