tehta, you are absolutely correct on the respective timing of their birthdays.  I hadn't quite put that together.  More cake, cake for everyone!
Mirasol, I love your collection and am glad you're less snowed under - the lavacake in particular is hysterical, and the squirrel token was indeed a sign.  Art is always in danger of Just One More Tweak!
Jitter...that certainly is a way to full-fill the prompt, oh my!
Opaque, I wholeheartedly agree - BOTH.  The later series of ST look great, but without a TV or streaming service I have never viewed any of it - I tapped out somewhere around the second series of DS9 and the first few episodes of Voyager.  TOS was so much a part of my growing up, playing on reruns on the UHF channels (sing along with me now the 'fight theme'), but I remember the excitement (and occasional cringing) of TNG as my appointment viewing of the late 80s.

I was going to snark a bit about the Clark Kent effect in Miraculous Ladybug (dude, black hair, big blue eyes, resourceful, hair in two ponytails, about yea tall....nothing?), but in the end decided on a different way to represent...

Day 12 - In Disguise

I'm still stunned this clever plan worked.  Really?  Really.

Maybe that's how your brain works on acid. (*ba-dum-tssssh*)

12.10.2021 In Disguise

Here are 250 words of the continuing adventures of Onni at Reynir's sister's wedding.

Spoiler: show
"Why are you disguised as an Icelander?" Lalli circled around Onni, eyes narrowed.

"I'm not disguised, I'm dressed up for the wedding… Ow! Leave my hair alone!"

"I'm just checking for braids. Are you going to make some? Or will Reynir help you?"

Was that some sort of mockery, or a genuine question? Onni decided to err on the side of helpfulness. "No, I am not planning to braid my hair."

“Mrf.” Lalli crossed his arms. "You still look weird. Why did you change?"

"I was told that the bride expects us to wear something colorful."

"I heard that too, but that’s a stupid reason to change. As I told Emil, if I wear grey, she won't even notice me, so she won't care what I am wearing."

“Other people might care.”

“What people?”

“Well, I might enjoy seeing you dressed up.” If only to feel better about his own ‘Icelandic disguise’. “And I know Reynir would. Emil, too, clearly.”

“I don’t care.” Lalli looked away, frowning, then resumed staring at Onni’s tunic. Still frowning. “Did you know you have staves all over you?”

“Yes.”

“What do they do?”

“Bring luck, apparently.”

“That’s stupid. You don’t need luck at a wedding. Not unless you’re the one getting married.”

“What staves would you wear to a wedding, then?”

“Staves of protection and concealment.”

Onni sighed. “If you are that interested in going unnoticed, maybe you should just cover yourself with branches and go disguised as a tree?”

“Yes. Maybe I should.”

So, in the end. yesterday's theme was... cake! Delicious cake.

Mirasol, I love both Sigrun's and the squirrel's baking efforts. (Especially Sigrun's, because she is most best.) And  I find the blue flame personally very appealing, somehow.

wave, what a nice reminder of one of the more fun episodes of Adventure Two!

Jitter, you already know what I think. (I think this is very sweet, really. Like cake.)

Of course, once Lalli thought things through, he realized that twigs and foliage are are bad camouflage at a wedding, and proceeded to inventing the Cake Ghillie Suit.

He was quite miffed when he found out that his intended model is only called "Earl Grey Cake", though.

This is a non-fandom-aligned original work for today's prompt, “In disguise”.  It's over 1400 words, which I hope is not too long.

Spoiler: Flying is for the birds • show

Flying is for the birds!

That's what I thought, waking up in my dorm room two years ago, after the near-disaster of the party.  And it had gone so well!

At first.

--------------------------------------

Going to college was strange and exciting.  Mom didn't want me to go; she didn't think I could handle it.  But it's not like I didn't know what the outside world was like; we had the Internet at home, after all.  She is perfectly happy living in our little valley and only going into town once a month, but I need more human contact.  Much more.

I put all the paperwork together, and I got admitted to OSU.  I had to take a bunch of tests since I was home-schooled, but Mom's an excellent teacher, and I had no trouble.  So there I was: seventeen and out on my own for the very first time.  I had made some friends.  Not close friends, and absolutely no lovers.  I've definitely learned from Mom's mistakes, even though I personally am one of them.

The drinking age is twenty-one, but students pretty much ignored that.  And, on a beautiful Spring evening, a group of about thirty underage students decided to have a party by the lake.  I went with them as a designated driver.  I can't drink because of the risk that I might lose control.

We got out there, some kids built fires, and we all stood or sat around and talked and drank.  With a new moon and not a cloud in the sky, it was very dark away from the fires, and couples were sneaking off into the surrounding woods.

I sneaked off down the road, past the woods, and into a field with the new grain just showing itself.  Even without my wings, I have much better night vision and hearing than normal people, so after a careful look around, I was sure I was unobserved.

I called my wings.

My wings are glorious, beautiful.  Their feathers are deep brown, barred with black and tipped with white.  My wingspan is about twenty feet, which is impressive, but clearly not enough to support my weight.  On the other hand, my wings come and go with my will, so they are not exactly bound by physics anyway.  When my wings come, so do my enhanced night vision and hearing.  I checked around again, listened to the lovebirds whispering back by the lake, and launched.

With a few wingbeats, I was up, far above the woods and the drunken students, up in the clear and beautiful air.  If any of them did look up, all they might see was a few stars briefly occluded.  They would have no idea what was happening.

I had not flown in six months, not since coming to college, and I revelled in the feeling, swooping and diving and twirling in sheer joy.

Until I heard the helicopter.

It was a long way off and no normal person would have seen or heard it.  It took just seconds for me to recognize that it was coming my way; it was coming for me.

I power-dived to the field, straightening up just feet above the grain, and streaked for the trees.  At the last moment, I flared my wings to kill my forward speed, dismissed them, and hit the ground running.  My night vision lingers for a few minutes after I dismiss my wings, so I had no trouble racing through the moonless woods, leaping over downed trees and avoiding low branches.  By the time the helicopter turned its searchlight on the field, I was back among the kids.

Everyone panicked.  It made no sense that the police would send a helicopter to break up an underage beer bash, but that's what appeared to be happening, and everyone ran for the cars.  Jacob, Michael, and Emily had come with me; they piled into my car along with Hannah, who had attached herself to Jacob during the party.  Mine was not the first car to leave, nor the second, but it was the third.  I thought that put me far enough back that I didn't appear to have superior knowledge, but also that we were unlikely to be caught.

I told the other four to duck down out of sight (Hannah and Jacob enthusiastically complied), and I drove exactly one mile below the speed limit, all the way back to the dorms.  Half a dozen official-looking cars passed us, but no one stopped us and we made it back safely.  We learned the next day that the last few students had been stopped and questioned about a large drone, but no one was arrested, and we were all very sober the next morning.

--------------------------------------

Flying is for the birds!

I understood what had happened, of course.  The entire nation is crisscrossed with radar, especially out here in the plains and the low rolling hills, and my flight must have shown up on every radar for fifty miles.  I had just thought that a big “drone”, many miles from any airport, would be disregarded.  More fool I!

I could just stick to the ground, but that was a terrible prospect.  Just six months without flying had made me so desperate to fly that I'd become careless.  I knew I couldn't go forever on the ground.  Of course, I could go home to Mom, but that was an absolute last resort.

Don't get me wrong; Mom's cool.  Imagine the average mother seeing her baby girl suddenly sprout wings and try to fly away.  I think she'd hesitate too long, thinking she'd lost her mind.  Not my mom.  She grabbed me by the ankle, hauled me down, folded my wings for me, and carried me inside.  (Not that I remember any of this, but she's told me often enough.)

And if the average mother had managed to catch the kid and take her inside, she'd think she'd lost her mind again when the wings just vanished.  Not my mom.  She experimented, carrying me in and out (keeping a tight grip all the while), and soon concluded that my wings only appeared outside at night.  She modified a dog harness to keep me from flying off, and informed the trustees that she needed a nice isolated property somewhere.

It's nice being a trust-fund baby.

The trustees found this house in a deep wooded valley with only one road in and out, and pretty soon there we were.  Keeping her baby girl leashed any time we went outside, she encouraged me to learn to summon the wings and dismiss them at will.  By the time I had control of them (I was about five), we could have moved back to town, but she'd discovered that she loved the isolation for her own sake.  We stayed.  And I flew within the valley, staying below the lines of the hills to avoid being seen.  It didn't occur to me -- then -- that I was also staying below the radar.

For lack of a better idea, I stayed at the college and kept going to class.  All the classes were pretty easy (Mom is an excellent teacher), but the only one I was interested in was the one on cryptids.  My father must have been a cryptid, after all.  Mom had an affair with him in college, and somehow the birth control failed and here I am.  By the time she realized she was pregnant, it was summer, and he'd graduated and disappeared.  Even the private investigators couldn't find him.

Maybe he literally disappeared.  I can't, though.  I've tried.

There were no reports of cryptids like him.  Or like me.

Summer came, and I went home to Mom.  Glorious freedom to fly!  After a month, though, I was lonely.  It doesn't bother her to be out there by herself, but I just can't stand it.

We sat down to look for some place where I could stay under the radar and still be around people.

And that's how I came to working here, at the Palo Duro Restaurant.  I'm a good waitress, and the patrons love me.  The cryptid-chasers especially love me, because when I'm off duty I'll sit with them and talk about cryptids.  (That class comes in very handy.)  They always ask me about rumors of the Great Owl of Palo Duro canyon, and I always tell them that, sadly, I've never seen it.  I'll spend hours with them going over maps of the canyon as they decide where and when to watch for it.

For all their fancy gear, they've never managed to spot the Great Owl.

lwise, this is great and not too long in the slightest! Have you by any chance checked out the Comic of the Month, White Noise by thepooka? If not, do, just saying :)

Mirasol, great works all, again! I also very much like the blue fire. I have a thing somewhere where blue flame indicates spirits of the dead arriving (in that case, Lalli’s parents, Tuuri and other of their relatives) and that is exactly how I imagined it - actual visible flames that are blue, not the translucent blue flame you get from e.g. a bunsen lamp.

Wave, I was also thinking of that scene :) But since I can’t draw, I’ll have to think up something else.

Opaque ouch little Lalli’s song. It makes me sad. But then the trekkie theme makes me glad!

As for both being good, of course two cakes is even more good than one cake! And so are two, erm, payloads, don’t you think? Remember when the baby was born, they could told the birth father by hair color so it was already established it could be either of them :)

Could someone please draw Onni in his colourful wedding tunic, and preferably with some braids too?

In disguise

Jukka and Tuulikki started to get worried. They had been calling Lalli for while now, but still no answer. Where could he have gotten to? Surely he wouldn’t leave the island, right?

It was getting dark already, so they decided it’s better to be safe than sorry, and asked for Juha’s family to help look around for the little weasel.

“Did you check at the tree?” Onni asked.

“Of course we did, it was the first place we checked!”

The adults were looking in all sorts of hiding places, in the sauna and the woodshed, and around the village. But Tuuri knew the adults weren’t always very bright, so she decided to check out Lalli’s tree anyways.

Arriving at the great spruce she called for Lalli and peered up the tree. No answer, and no sign of his cousin. Except… the lowest branches were really really tangled. Tuuri picked up a stick and started poking. After a few pokes the brambles hissed “Knock it out!”

“What are you doing there?”
“Don’t talk to me. I’m a tree.”
“Well, I think you are a big baby!”
“I am a tree! Go away!”
“Everyone is looking for you, Lalli”
“Lalli is not here. I’m a tree.”
“Ok, suit yourself. I’ll go eat all the cookies by myself then.”
“What cookies?”
“Funny, it’s almost as if I heard someone talking, but there’s nothing but trees here.”

Wow Wow Wow! More and more and more excellent works! I feel hard pressured to properly appreciate all that!

And I've seen not one but two (!) mentions on my profile! Mirasol, your squirrel is absolutely stunning! I would never imagine it looking so good! It makes me want to dive again on our Squirrelworld, something that I've been thinking since the first time I wrote about Oaktown and its inhabitants. I promise to do it, but I don't know when...

Also Jitter, that's a fantastic (and hot) piece! I really love our boys'  :lalli: :emil: family and the practical approach they follow to that delicate subject... ;)

Now you people may have noticed that I'm not that regularly around these days. That's because I have a few things to deal with (nothing to worry about, all's fine) and because I've been lost in another "Universe". So lost that I missed the day for the "Fire" prompt, but I will show what I did anyway, because it's all about transformation, more exactly transforming our characters on something else...

So I won't bother you any more. Here it goes, under spoiler because it's a bit long...

An Adventure of Fire and Ice

Spoiler: show

Episode 1

"Emil! Are you here?" The long stairway that spun until the top of the Red Keep's highest tower seemed to go up forever, leaving a breathless Lalli wondering why his best friend enjoyed so much to stand on that lone place, having just the wind as company.

"Emil!" He called again, his voice weak, as he opened the door to the terrace, right on the top. And of course Emil was there, his silver hair sparkling under the morning sun. He looked completely distracted, playing with Kitty.

"Emil! Why you never listen?" Lalli said as he approached the young prince. "You knew the King would call you to the Small Council. Why did you have to come up here?"
Just then those beautiful, captivating purple eyes left Kitty to pay some attention to Lalli. "Hum... Did I knew? I don't recall..."

"My prince should be more attentive." Lalli said, approaching him and adding a small bow that was obviously sarcastic between them, particularly when nobody else was present. "The Master of Whisperers reminded you about that early this morning, when we both met him at the main courtyard."

"Oh, now that you mention it... That Ukko-Pekka always gives me the shivers. There's something about him, the way he looks... Anyway, the meeting will probably be just some boring stuff. Father must feel that I need to participate more now that I'm of age..." A flash of fear appeared on his eyes, and he moved away from the battlements, awkwardly descending the high steps towards Lalli. The movement shaken Kitty from her perching on Emil's shoulder, prompting the young dragon to open her wings and hiss.

"Perhaps... What if they are already considering some betrothal? Engaging me with a girl from a noble house! Or worse, some princess from a foreign country!"

Lalli patted him, smiling "My poor prince, forced to marry a beautiful woman and live here, or on some other castle, among the riches, worrying his pretty head with several little princes..."

"Lalli! Stop that!" Emil gave him a slow punch on the chest. "You, above everyone, know very well what I think about that! Can you imagine the pressure? People counting the days, weeks and months, waiting for her belly to bulge? Noticing what she eats or... which sounds we make on our bed? Whispering, harassing the servants to find out if my... wife... is or not again on that time of the month?"

"Truly a most terrifying prospect! I'm sure no peasant would ever exchange a satisfying life working on the fields from sunrise to sunset to endure such a challenge."

"Fine! Be as sarcastic as you wish!" Emil said, looking Lalli in the eyes. "You know how hard it would be for me. And with that would come responsibility, so less time to hang around, read or enjoy the company of friends..." And his voice trailed of.

"Hum... I suppose if you request my presence I'll be able to follow you." Lalli said, winking and handling Emil a large folded black tissue.

"What's that?"

"Your formal cloak. You don't want to show up on a meeting of the Small Council with those regular clothes." Said Lalli as he helped Emil with the black cloak emblazoned in the back with the red Targaryen three-headed dragon coat-of-arms. "There! Now you look like a proper prince!"

Emil gently caressed Lalli's hair. "You always think on everything, don't you? I would be lost without your... friendship."

Lalli's long fingers closed around Emil's arm, pushing it away. "Careful. Someone may see us!"

"What? How? Here, on the tallest tower?"

"Look up there."

"That bird circling above? You mean..."

"If I can do it others may do the same."

For a few moments Emil stayed silent, standing still as the wind blew around them, weighting the implications of Lalli's words. "Right, I'll be more careful."

A large smile appeared on Lalli's face. "Today must be a remarkable day indeed! My prince accepts my suggestion and takes the wisest course of action!"

"Oh, stop that! I'm just worried about my... our lives!"

"Fine, but we don't know what will happen. We only know for sure that you have been summoned, and also that's not a good idea to leave the King, and all the others, waiting for too long. We must go now!"

As if understanding Lalli's words Kitty decided to take flight on that moment, or maybe it was just chasing an adventurous butterfly that happened to pass by.

Emil and Lalli observed as the small dragon fluttered up and down, following the insect's path. Of course she could easily open her maw and burn the prey, but presently she seemed more interested in the hunt.

"Let her enjoy herself, Emil. Let's go. It's a long way down."

"Yes, you're right. Better go before they send someone else... Onni, probably. No use in delaying the inevitable."

Emil had just open the door to the stairway when a distinctive "WOOOSH" made him and Lalli look back, in time to see the butterfly's burning remains fall to the stone floor.

.......................................

Before someone asks: Yes, this is just the first episode. It's a challenging thing to dwelve on a dense and already stablished lore, and it takes time, and many visits to their Wiki... So I decided to make it by small episodes, hoping to avoid long times and hopefully making it more manageable with all the other things that I have on my Mind, including the second part of Gregor Samsa's story... ;)

I'm not familiar with the Targaryn story, but it's still cute.  Two stories featuring flying at night! (I'm not counting the blessed cinnamon bun as flying, although it certainly looks to have lifted Lalli's spirits!)  I really like that cryptid story, thanks for that.  Lalli is a twig, right? So why not a tree? Of course trees don't eat cookies.

Mine is only a kinda-sorta crossover, for Day 13 - Food.  We all know nothing says fOoD quite like the dusklings, but who do they talk to when there aren't handy adventurers?  I reached over to the Botober prompt list again, with Tiny Shelled Horses, for the answer.

Opaque, your mini Lalli is truly adorable, and I suppose his passion for Cinnamon rolls is making this one fly! :D

Wave, great sketch! I love your sketeches, and the tiny horses are fantastic, as is the "not kosher" at the end! :D

Effectively a simple change in size can alter a lot... So here goes my take on the Food prompt.

Hm, I like this idea. :) To be honest, I didn´t put nearly as much thought into it beyond "what is a brightish color I have a lot of that isn´t some shade of red" (though I did consider drawing the weird light/flame-effects from the game "Everyone´s gone to the Rapture" first, which go into a similar direction, indicating the memory of souls).
But this is a very nice meaning to the flame!

To your stories, I still really like how you always find ways to expand on your timelines at different points! (And yes. Trees don´t eat cookies. More for the rest of the Hotakainens!)

Wave, you picked a great scene for "in disguise"! :'D Perhaps that plan worked because it confused the Kalma´s too much to care? And those Dusklings must have been surprised to run into some other specimen not really familiar to earth... Just in a completely different way. (Though the concept of a tiny shelled horse in itself ist strangely cute?)

tehta, Lalli doing everything to not stick out at the wedding put a smile on my face. Though probably it´ll be just as unusual to be the only one showing up in all grey when everyone else wears bright colors... :lalli:

Iwise, I really like your cryptid-story! And you have some very interesting worldbuilding in it!

Opaque, haha, now this is one very serious clown. :'D And tiny Lalli is adorable!

Grey, your Kitty-dragon just gave me a very stupid idea... But I must wait for a fitting prompt I can use for it. A sweet story nonetheless, I´m interested in how it´ll continue! And OH NO Reynir get away from there!!! (Now is this a cave filled with Dusklings or in itself one giant Duskling (As indicated by the two rocks looking like eyes at the top)? Which option is worse???)

Here´s my contributions for the past two days:

11: Both is good

This is a scene more or less straight taken out of the web-show "Bee and Puppycat". The animal that adopts the protagonist in the first episode has traits of both a dog and a cat, so instead of finding out what he is she just names him Puppycat.

12: In disguise

One of my favorite Studio Ghibli-movies is "My neighbor Totoro". So here are Totoro and some other smaller spirits disguising themselves as various plant-life and landmarks. Luckily they´re invisible to most eyes in the first place.

supposedly studying, most likely drawing…
