Invent your own idioms!
« on: November 16, 2015, 04:52:58 PM »
As you might already know, many languages have many weird idioms and established phrases for all sorts of things (seems Englishmen felt that rain was as heavy as a moderately large mammal...).

Well, if you like them, why not make your own! So, how does the game work? One person gives some meaning to be conveyed through an idiom, and the next person thinks of an idiom they think could have the given meaning. Then that person gets to set a meaning that the third person's idiom has to fit, and so on...
EDIT: Also, it would be cool to explain how you came up with the idea and/or why you think it fits.

(Example:
1st person: "to be obnoxiously cheerful"
2nd person: "to be obnoxiously cheerful": "to choke with honey"
"to share feelings with somebody who doesn't appreciate it"
3rd person: "to share feelings with somebody who doesn't appreciate it": "to vomit water on somebody"
... and so on, you get the point)

Soo... I guess I'll start then?

"to have a wildly irregular and unhealthy sleep pattern" (I think I could find such an idiom to be of great use u_u)

"Sleeping in the frying pan."

You should now give a phrase so that the next person can think up an idiom for it. :)

Doorway amnesia.

How about that thing when you pretend to remember someone who seems to know you to avoid making things awkward by asking?

Hnnn, maybe "to wait for the wedding vows"? ;)

What about... a person who doesn't want people to think they don't know something they do?

Oh, you mean me?  ;)

I'd call that "stealth knowledge"

What would you call hiding how disappointed you are in a present you've been given?
Keep an eye on me. I shimmer on horizons.

Not letting candle porridge get cold.

How do you call that small feeling of misplaced pride when, as an anxious person, you think "I knew it!" when something bad happens?

I like where this is going :D Maybe something like "to be all Minnion about sth"?  :))

Hmm, what do you call it when you plan for a big event in the future, but you have a feeling it won't happen, cause it's too large-scale? (Nothing to do with Helsinki 2017 or similar, of course >_>)

To be planning an expedition to the Silent World? XD

To be sad about something specific, but then the next moment you don't remember what exactly made you sad and you're just sad about life in general?

Tears of the drunkard.

When someone you think you know on the street turns out to not be the person you thought at all so you spend a few minutes small-talking.
