THIS. Only it hasn't been a problem since I moved to Iceland, the university library here is so quiet you even try to breathe quietly. If you try to talk the staff is on you immediately, even whispering might get you someone hushing you up. There's sound proof rooms for group work and so forth but outside of them it's silence or a very strict talking-to from a librarian*. The libraries in Finland though... I could tell you stories. -.-

(*Icelandic librarians are a force of nature and should never be crossed.)

Sometimes, at my university library, when the big room devoted to History/Geography/History of Arts became to noisy, we heard a message from the librarians, saying this place was made for researches and studies in silence, thank you. Meanwhile, I was acting as if yes, of course, I was a third year student and working in the other room which was so much quiet.

well, there's no way around reading it or at least looking at it, because exams and stuff, but i was given the choice of going to a market with HORSE SLEIGHS and FOLK MUSIC....... or attending a non-obligatory lecture at 8am. i still regret it a little because dang it i like the lectures but i don't regret it enough. røros was good
