Back from the desert. Went to death valley in California, stuff was closed from flooding, ended up snorkeling instead of hiking out there, and yes I did have fins and a mask in my truck as a "just in case" kinda thing.

It's never been a worse time to build a pc/buy a new gpu.

1300-2400 DOLLARS for a new 1080 gtx ti

600 dollars for a brand new 1060 gtx.

And cpus/ram are in limbo right now.

How that? Meltdown/Spectre fallout? That should affect only the CPUs, not RAM, shouldn't it ... ?
I got mail (from a communal administration) today, in a clean, entirely white envelope - that is, until I opened it. The interior is dark grey, but the outside of the edge where I opened it with a blade turned red over most of its length.

I guess there must be a third layer between the surface ones, but I wonder whether it was really their intention to use envelopes that BLEED when you cut them. :o

RAM is out the wahoo right now for some reason. It used to be water, you could get it anywhere for a good price. But for 16 gigs of ram it's 200 bucks for me where I live. I don't know about the CPU world but they're in limbo right now. All I know is we live in the PC dark ages right now.

It's insane.

Might be a way to prove it hasn't been tampered with. Nice choice of color, right?

I thought of that, but when I needed a (replacement copy of a previous) Grundbesitzabgabenbescheid half a year earlier, I called them (quite likely for the first time ever), was told they can send that by e-mail, gave them my address, and received the digital version the same day. Plain-as-dirt provider-operated e-mail account, none of that "identity assured" stuff like BusinessMail X.400, De-Mail, E-POSTBRIEF, EGVP, ... .

Iirc it's because a majority of the ram chips are going into phone production right now.
