I see what you mean. I'm currently getting ideas for my fantasy-ish AU out of my system, and I seem to be unable to write that genre without promptly making it darker than my other stuff, while still keeping most of what happens "on-screen" suitable for children.

Place in Cambridge, MA, right off Harvard Square.  They have a sizeable gluten-free menu (the GF is GF).  Just all-around yum.

Lost a family friend last week (right at the start of my trip to vermont for work). I'm taking it a lot better than my best friend due to the manner in which he passed being almost the exact same circumstances as the way his dad had passed when he was a kid (stress induced heart attack).. regardless kinda feel a little down right now.

That said, because it was a working trip, I didn't actually get to explore vermont until friday and only made a single trip. Cabot annex (which also included the smuggler's notch distillery gift shop). Did a taste test, here are the results and my opinions.

SND:
SND Vodka: smooth vodka, would make for great home-made vanilla.
SND Bourbon: I don't normally drink bourbon so I have no frame of reference. it was fairly smooth with a mild kick to it.
SND MAPLE Bourbon: Same as above, with a hint of sweetness and maple.
SND Rum: really smooth for an unspiced rum, 10/10 would buy.
SND maple rum: sadly they had none available.
SND 3 years aged in a boubon cask Maple Syrup: If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, try this and buy a bottle... and no it's not for drinking. it's pancakes, toast, waffles, ice cream etc.

Cabot:
Habenero cheddar: yeah I went for this first. Very good, much warm, wow.
Pepperjack: pretty good.
Herbed cheddar: I don't know what herbs... I didn't ask, probably oregano and thyme. tasted good.
Sharp/sharplight/lightsharp: all were kinda cheddary.
Scottish traditional cheddar: Very sharp, would use in a mix with one of the lighter cheddars in mac-n-cheese
Tomato herb cheddar: alright. not bad.

But yeah, this is pretty much my trip to vermont last week, started with tragedy, then I spent most of it in meetings and I capped it off with cheese and spirits.
I'm a writer too,

Mostly 'pocylyse things though, check out my story from the start, Blog with the Blastwave.

Speaking of Vermont cheese I could have recommended one of the states hidden jewels. Crowley Cheese, I guess they're in Belmont. Just up 103 from Ludlow sort of. Small very non-automated company been around for ever, like nearly 200 yrs. Cabot is very good and beats processed American type cheese hands down. But Crowley is way beyond that. Artisanal cheese, doesn't even come close. Maybe on your next trip.

Things aren't yet bad enough to merit the Natural Disaster thread, but if anyone has been noticing the weather reports from the Barossa and Adelaide Hills and has wondered how we are faring, we are okay. Some flooding, trees down, power outages and lightning-started fires, but we and the cats are safe inside, listening to the hail and hoping we don't get a repeat of the bad storm a few years ago that peeled off part of our roof.

Being my usual over-prepared and hypercautious self, I did have a reserve of firewood, although our more usual problem at this time of year is heatwaves and bushfires, and I'm glad I did. Consider climate disruption very thoroughly sworn at!

I will update as the situation changes, but if I drop out of contact for awhile the most likely reason is power outage and/or phone towers being down. Luck to all the locals.

Good luck! Reenactors are usually able to cope with weather, barring out and out disasters.

Good luck to you and to all of your neighbors, Róisín.

And I think there's something to be said for overpreparation, myself; at least, to a point.

Thanks for the good wishes. Unless something really catastrophic happens we should be okay, I think. And I much prefer being overprepared rather than being underprepared.

Yeeks and egads, I hope you come out all right.  There's a freaky cold storm running up NZ as well, bringing snow to many parts south of here, but Auckland's just a bit more cold and rainy than usual.  "Usual" being "Crap, it's almost summer, you can get on with the good weather any old time now.  No?  All righty."

We're okay so far, and doing much better than are White Cliffs or Sydney. We were getting the edges of that dust storm when the hail storms knocked the dust out of the sky here. Now we just have somewhat discoloured hail and sleet. Interesting weather.....

14F, -10C here in New England today. Not outlandish but rather unseasonable.
Best wishes to Róisín and wavewright62 for better weather.
