The aRTD Poetry Thread
« on: September 01, 2014, 05:25:56 PM »
There was a lot of poetry from the aRTD comments that didn't make it into the back of the book.  Anybody up for archiving the work of our Bards?
Feel free to PM.

Written on page 55 of SSSS, and also exists on deviantart. It fits here as well

Inspired by and modeled after the Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

Once upon a net-surf session, as I clicked without discretion
clicked through every link and banner looking for a comic score.
As I searched, my eyes a scanner, suddenly I saw a banner
illustrated in a manner unlike all I'd seen before.
"It's just the picture," I was thinking "no story can so highly soar.
Only this and nothing more."

Oh, how I was lost for ages reading all the pretty pages
watching as the hero rages when he sees there's yet a chore.
And I thought that such a treasure must be updated at leisure?
But I saw to no disleasure every day there's even more.
Quality for awe and peace and almost every day there's more.
Such skill I never could ignore.

And down below the picture-story, bright in comment-section glory
there were nice and pretty people dancing on the comment floor.
I read and saw, to my delight, for pages, not a troll in sight.
The demons of the anon-blight had never found this door.
This place of fun and stories had on bad words closed it's door.
So kind and fun for evermore.

As the tale approached it's ending, to my sorrow I was tending
with the thought that She was sending us right to the next calm shore.
For the tale I'd grown to love was just another seed to sow
for even greater tales to grow, so She'd be better than before.
"Just impossible," you say "that She'll be better than before"
And She will prove you wrong once more.

Well, there's Riorlyne, who has a DA page with some fan-poems: http://riorlyne.deviantart.com/gallery/46643621/Fanart
There are two specific aRTD poems in her fanart folder:

A Dog Again

A dog again,
With your twitching ears and your tail and your wet black nose
That works again,
Snuffing the ground and around in excitement that shows
You’re a dog again;
And you bark at the shadows you pass as we go
Back home again,
You by my side with your paws sinking deep in the snow:
Just
A dog again.

Silently
We follow the road as the stars mark the closing of day,
And wordlessly
Wander homeward together with nothing to say;
Quietly,
I open the door, stumble through, in a chair find a place
And you come to me,
Lay your head on my knee and look up at my face,
Still,
So silently.

There are words
Glimmering in your eyes:
I can see them there, waiting there,
But I can’t hear them.
Just a dream
Is all that our journey was,
And waking here I find you just
A dog again.

Comes night again,
With you curled in a ball lying warm on my feet;
Dark again,
And your tail thumps out a calm, contented beat;
If I dream again,
Will you speak like you did, or will I never see
Your voice again?
Ville, Ville, tell me that you won’t forever be
Just
A dog again.

Hannu-Muffin

“I’m sad,” Hannu said, with calmness of face
(on which not a hint of 'sad' could be seen),
While recounting to parents his puppy-dog’s fate—
“Our little honey Hannu-muffin!
“How terribly awful that must have been!”

“This sadness,” he added, “I hid it away.”
(Indeed, so he did—not a tear touched his cheeks)
But his parents were almost too choked up to say—
“Our selfless, suffering, sweet, sweet angel!
“To be hurting so bravely alone all these weeks!”

“But I’ve had a friend in whom to confide!”
Said Hannu, never from Ville apart;
And Topi and Ellu rushed to his side—
“Our dearest, darling Ville-dumpling!
“You’ll be like our son now, and dear to our hearts!”

And, as a bonus (sort of?) here's a link to me trying to sing the epic poem that was in the back of the book: http://oreramar.tumblr.com/post/95950724691/a-fanpoem-sung-vaguely-to-the-tune-associated

Found this by pure chance. Poem by Bellar.

One book to read it all, One book to find them,

One book to bring them all and in its pages bind them,

In the land of Fin where the comics lie.

A while ago I made a document with all the typos in aRTD pointed out and explained (if it had to do with grammar) and I think I made a separate document with all the poetry I came across along the way. I'll upload it when I find it. :)

Here is a theme poem for ARD I just came up with. I know it's kinda belated at this point but...

Hear, oh hero
Hear my call
For you must go
For the sake of all

Hear, oh Han-nu
Vil-le too!
For I dream
My dream for you

In the fall of memory
In the fog of destiny
In the waters of chance and fate
On the bird's path walk the great!

Hear, oh hero
Hear my song
For you must go
To fix what went wrong

Hear, oh Han-nu
Vil-le too!
This the task
I ask of you!

In the fall of memory
In the fog of destiny
In the waters of chance and fate
On the bird's path walkt the great!

Hear, oh hero
Hear me sing
For your good deed
Tis the gift I bring

Hear, oh Han-nu
Vil-le too!
A Redtail's dream
I dream for you
The world's gone mad, Oh yes it's true
But I care not, for I'm mad too!

I have some things of my own that I'll be dumping in this thread later (still in the editing process). But first, to address the original subject -

There was a lot of poetry from the aRTD comments that didn't make it into the back of the book.  Anybody up for archiving the work of our Bards?

It looked to me like nobody else had completed this, though it's been a while, so I decided to go through the aRTD comment archive.

I decided that the easiest approach would be to put everything in a link-index spreadsheet.

The comment poetry index can be viewed here.

A few things:
  • There are 40 entries in the index, but not all of them are individual poems; some of them are translations, others are parts that were posted separately. These are marked as such.
  • Some of these have multiple writers. In those cases, they're listed in order of posting.
  • Sometimes the comment link works for me, and sometimes it doesn't. If all else fails, I suggest using the actual page link and page-searching the writer's username.
  • Also, for a while, there was a different comment system that did not allow direct-linking; those are marked as such.
  • It's always possible that I missed one or two. A few of these were buried in collapsed comment threads, so I might have missed others that were similar. Anyone who comes across one that's missing, please give me a poke and tell me which page it's on, and I'll add it.

It's nice to have everything linked in one place! Some of them were really good, and only a few made it to the official fanpoetry page.

It's starting to get cold, but I'm not quite ready to let go of summer just yet, so.... This one takes place in the summer following the end of the comic, I guess. From Hannu's point of view.

Where you belong

It's almost midnight
thin summer sun peeking
through slightly-open blinds
clicking on the sill as the breeze presses in.
It's too hot in here.
And there you are
right beside me, because
where else would you be?
This bed isn't big enough for the both of us.
I remember when you were
as you were, so small
when we first met -
you fit in my arms with room to spare.
Now I'm the one who fits against you
as you wrap yourself
around me, keeping close.
It's nice in January
when the room's ice-cold
frost tracing window panes.
Now I want to kick you out of bed.
I know what will happen -
you'll give me those eyes
and I'll give in and
we'll end up just as we are.
I'll shove off the sheets
shut my eyes tight, but
sleep's a lost cause.
The alarm clock will scream in a few hours.
Whatever,
it's fine. I can't sleep, but
I don't mind.
You're right where you belong.

Yuuago, that's so cute! And so very Hannu! I love how you write his thoughts, it looks so genuine.
I laughed at "Now I want to kick you out of bed." XD

Two to post this time... Going under cuts to conserve space. :V These were both meant for the prompt challenge thing. First is "End", second is "Give up".

01. "Hero's Journey". Characters: Hannu & Ville, gen. 20 lines. About heroes and stories and endings. Backup

Spoiler: show

Hero's Journey

The story ends
when everything is placed
as it was in the beginning.
When the hero trudges home
faithful dog at his side –
Uh, wait a minute. Not quite...

As stars shine bright over the village
and chatter rolls at the fest table
as if nothing happened.
If only you knew.
Not a word of thanks for all the trouble –
it's better that way.
The lies can wait.

What they don't tell you about stories
is that when it's all over
the heroes crawls into bed
sink to sleep like a stone.
They stay close together
curled to each other
and if they're lucky
they won't have any dreams.

02. "As close as skin". Pairing: Joona/Hannu. 27 lines. In the end, one of them always gives in. Backup

Spoiler: show

As close as skin

Your arms around my waist
firm, grounding
while you grind me down
and wait for me to say
what you want to hear.

I've known you for years
but now I also know
the shape of your mouth
and the weight of your hands
and the quiet of your voice
as your lips brush my ear.

My mouth crowds with words
and I clamp my teeth
cage them up
hide them as you try
to find the right key
press the right button
send them running.

If you try to laugh, I won't let you.
I'll turn around on you
swallow it whole
even if it's just
what you wanted all along.

It's only because
you're as close as skin
biting like a thorn
I can't dig out.

Aww, these are really nice! I especially love the last stanza of "Hero's Journey" - you're fueling my "Hannu and Ville cuddling" feels something fierce!

Oh, don't worry, the cuddles-feelings are strong with this one. :)) Also...I realized yesterday that 99% of my feelings about Hannu and Ville are completely based on page 549/550 of the comic. Which is...slightly ridiculous, considering how many other important bonding moments they have. Ah, well.
