Good grief, second hit of google results for "percentage of women on aircraft carriers US", and by pure coincidence it's even the right ship, at least as of 2015:

(link is to a video, which I didn't watch, but the quote below is in print right below the video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebkBLYeh2jQ

Quote
Of the 5300 personnel on board USS Carl Vinson, more than 800 of them are women.

So indeed about 15%. Enough to form a sizeable contingent; and enough to produce a significant next generation; but not nearly enough for pairing off. (Some of the men are presumably gay or asexual, but then presumably so are some of the women.) Would be some interesting stories -- some of them more unnerving than others -- about how that would get worked out.

I agree they'd want to delay pregnancy for a while; but I'd expect some early pregnancies anyway, as people at least some of whom are going to be in a barely controlled state of panic may not be careful about birth control and even if they are it doesn't always work.

Also pregnancies in one's late thirties are significantly riskier than ones in the twenties; and while there may indeed be occasional canon pregnancies in women in their late 50's, that's very unusual and also very risky. Presuming that they are aiming for another generation, I'd think they'd be trying to start pregnancies by the women's late 20's. A military crew's going to skew young, but not all the personnel are going to be that young.

I think the ICS Steadfast went far out to sea first, and waited out the pandemic to get rid of the US army. After about a year or so they only have trolls and beasts to clear out. A couple of the California Channel Islands have no human population or just a couple park rangers, and the military ones have about 200 personnel.

America is a bit unique in the world for its stockpile of weaponry among both military and civilians - so I could still imagine issues even years in even for an aircraft carrier.

Again it's speculative so I also don't think it's beyond belief for them to be fairly easily able to take over a few without issue.

The most optimistic stats i ever remember seeing for "not attracted to the opposite sex" is 10%, so in terms of the men it wouldn't have a big impact.  They'd be able to do ICI insemination ("turkey baster") for women who aren't into PIV - which is what some straight women choose to do as well.

And yes 15% female population could get ugly and dystopic fast but hopefully it wouldn't.

My understanding is that a lot of women in that role are on longterm birth control like IUDs/arm implants, and the medical bay likely has solid stores of birth control injections - mostly because they accept humans have desires and it's a scenario you really don't want an "oops".  So while i do think some would happen i also think it'd be far, far fewer early pregnancies than the population in general.

Yeah I really maintain that Minna just did not do the math and the ages should be disregarded a bit.  It seems like the majority of people in SSSS whose age we know at conception were near/over 40- which really just isn't realistic.

So yeh, I surprised myself and have another, this time for clone. Vacation does me good, clearly!

Reynir walked nonchalantly into Bjarni’s room. “Can I borrow your sweater?”

“Uh, sure, but it’s going to be too small for you?”

“Don’t worry, it’s only for a sec. I’ll show you something!” Reynir was pulling on Bjarni’s sweater, which was far too short for him, but was nevertheless sort of wearable. He fished a note and a small mirror from his pocket and started drawing on his own forehead.

“Yeah, that’s it… no! ouch!” Reynir was hurriedly wiping off his markings but started again. Bjarni was mildly interested in his little brother’s shenanigans, but all of a sudden there was a strange… something strange in the air. Now Bjarni was flabbergasted, as he was staring at… himself!

“Oh, I’m Bjarni Arnason and my brother is the greatest adventurer of all time! Really, my brother Reynir is so cool! He single-handedly magicked away a horde of…” the “Bjarni” in front of him started.

“Wha… what’s going on? How did you do that?? And I don’t sound like that at all!”

“Cool, ain’t it? I saw this rune meant for making wool of a sheep like the wool of a better sheep and tweaked it a bit! You need to have something from the original, and then there’s this galdrastafur which…”

“Wow, Reynir! Do you realize what this means! The possibilities are endless!” Bjarni was immediately scheming.

“Um, no, sorry. You have to wear something from that person.”

“That’s easy, I’ll pop downstairs to find something of dad’s right now!”

“No! It only lasts for about two minutes anyway!” Reynir was already starting wonder if it was a good idea to show the trick to Bjarni after all.

“What’s the point of making a sheep’s wool different for two minutes?”

“This is not the original version, stupid. We are not sheep, in case you didn’t notice. Although your, well, right now our, head does look like it’s been sheared. The original spell is not very nice either, you have to cut the stave into the skin, and I would never ever do that to a lamb! But this version is fun, no?”

Right at that moment, Bjarni’s door opened, and their mum stepped in.

“Bjarni, I need you to… What is this!” Her visage darkened considerably.

“Well, I, it’s…” both Bjarnis stammered something unintelligible.

Unerringly, Sigriður grabbed the ear of the Bjarni who was actually Reynir.

“Reynir! You knock this out this second! One Bjarni if enough for this family! Didn’t they teach you anything in the Academy? Aunt Helga always kept saying how magic is not for fun!”

“I bet she did” Bjarni (the real one) muttered, earning a fiery glance from their mum.

“You are not to fool around with these things! It is dangerous! You could end up getting sheep colic!”

“I know, Mom. I’m sorry, Mom. I won’t do it again, Mom.” (Reynir was of course keeping his fingers crossed behind his back).

“You make sure you don’t! You hear me?!”

“But Mom, how did you know which one was me?”

“Of course I know! A mother always knows. Undo it this instant!”

Sighing, Reynir wiped his forehead and removed Bjarni’s sweatshirt. Still, it was a neat trick, wasn’t it just?

Well done, Jitter!

Also, in fairness, you would assume the version with the giant magic mark on his forehead was the fake.

I've also got one for this week's prompt.  The first thing that came to my head was Dolly the Sheep, then I remembered what @thorny said about Kitty's genetics likely being valuable - https://archiveofourown.org/works/43841781/chapters/110376294

Also I just realized I currently have 7 fics that are either finished and need to be posted, or need to be finished.  I think I might need a 12 step program.

Oh no, the mark is hidden while the spell lasts. Which is not very long. He also looks like he has the same clothes as Bjarni does at the moment, i.e. not the sweater he borrowed but the one Bjarni currently has. But the mother always knows!

There is a scene in the Moomin book “Finn Family Moomintroll” where Moomintroll hides in the Hobgoblin’s hat, which turns him into a tarsier. None of his friends recognize him, and he’s panicking until Moominmamma arrives and recognizes him, because of course the mother always knows. (Weird thing, the name of the book is both in original Swedish and in Finnish (the author Tove Jansson was a Fennoswede) is “The Magician’s Hat” and the magician is Magician, not “hobgoblin”)

Ah i see now! And yes I'm not surprised she could still tell.

Meanwhile there's Spirited Away where Yubaba can't recognize her own baby after he's been transformed into a mouse and breaks the poor kid's heart. She was a terrible person, though.

She was! The spirits took her precisely because the parents didn’t care!

Yes she was

A real mom would know.

I love the story!!
Fate gives all of us three teachers, three friends, three enemies, and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them, or fought them.

No no, Yubaba is the witch who took Chihiro's name - she has the giant baby.  Giant baby gets transformed into a mouse. (I believed Yubaba's sister is the one who transformed him) and also Yubaba's crow into a tiny mosquito-like bird.

At the end, Yubaba can't recognize her own baby which is likely part of why the baby pretty threatens her to be nice to Chihiro.

Chihiro's parents do care about her they're also selfish and greedy and steal food thinking they can just cover it with a credit card - not considering it may have been for something more important. (Which it was) That's why they got turned into pigs.

Very nice contributions!

Jitter, I find Reynir a bit lacking in imagination. Two minutes is PLENTY of time for successful shenanigans. And, really, stealing clothes is not all that hard. They just have to pick theirs marks wisely.

Dreki, I did already see your story on AO3, but it was pre-kudosed by me. I should have commented! Only, the main thing I wanted to say was a bit "well, actually": that  know from the Kasvatus series (much-beloved fanfic saga on AO3) that our world's Icelandic magic already has a cat-cloning rune! Or, at least, a rune for provoking an immaculate conception in a cat.  In the words of Kasvatus!Reynir, ""[If] you put that rune in a cat's mouth, the cat becomes pregnant. We just call it the "kittenfiller", it's a handy one."

Presumably there's also a 'no-kittens-for-now' rune? That would be at least as handy.

And a version for humans!

I don't particularly like Kasvatus, honestly. I massively disagree with the characterizations of most of the characters. I like everything not involving a canon character, but unfortunately I don't think we got a non-canon mage.
So I'm not really treating it as any kind of canon.

Plus if you think scientists would roll over and stop scienceing just because of magic - you definitely haven't been around enough scientists.

The Disney movie 'Onward' is based on the premise magic is real but technology is easier.  I quite like the premise.
