And then we can do 'burnout' the week after.

Not a serious suggestion! I like the sequence, and will try to actually produce something. Only... I mostly feel in the mood for Emilalli...

oooh decisions...Truthfully I am fine with the majority's opinion.

I have to admit it will be harder for me to write something for "play"and "work" than Emilalli.

Emilalli pops in my head so easily, I should be able to do a quick one for that (I hope I did not just jinx myself   :headbang:)

Though the work/play were suggested first.  And "burnout" after Mikkel
s birthday is not a bad idea.

I know I read something recently, where Lalli was burning/burnt out and Onni had to step in.  So I actually think in the SSSS world burnout is a very real thing.  People have to do so much to survive, that it probably is a common occurrence..

I consider Lalli's loss of luonto to be a bit of a burnout metaphor. At least, I was burned out when I read about it, and the experience felt relatable. (I had about a month where all I wanted to do was lie about uselessly. Any ghosts could have eaten me alive!)

Also, I was not suggesting Emilalli as a prompt. I was just saying that I am currently very likely to turn any prompt X into "X+Emilalli". I just find them comforting to write about.
For example, here is "train+Emilalli" (which I started intending to write a drabble, sigh):

Spoiler: show
“Emil,” said Mikkel. “I am worried about you.”

Emil looked up from his bowl of soup, his eyes questioning. Only his eyes, though, which was, of course, the issue.

“I am worried,” Mikkel continued, “because you haven’t complained about anything today. Not even about the extra gristle I made sure to place in your bowl.”

Emil’s eyes widened. He poked at the soup with his spoon, then sent Mikkel a look of betrayal before setting both spoon and bowl down, and pointing at his throat.

“You… have a sore throat? Well, you should tell me these things! That could be very serious, it could be–”

But Emil was already shaking his head. When he stopped, he pointed to his throat again, then drew his hand across it as if… cutting it?

“I think he’s saying that he lost his voice!” suggested Reynir excitedly. In Icelandic. Which, of course, meant that Mikkel was forced to translate.

“Emil. Reynir believes that you have you lost your voi–”

“He probably has,” cut in Sigrun, “but that’s not what he’s saying. I know that gesture well. It means he wants to murder someone. Probably you, Mikkel, in retaliation for the extra gristle. And who can blame him?”

Mikkel turned to Onni, to see if he, too, had a contribution, but Onni merely grunted, so he turned to Lalli, instead.

Lalli sighed. “You’re all wrong. Emil is fine. He’s just training.”

“Training?” Sigrun asked. “To do what?”

“To be silent.”

“Ah!” Mikkel looked from Emil to Lalli, grinning. “That’s clever. Did you suggest it? Finally got tired of all his complaining, did you?”

While Emil made a series of dramatic facial expressions, Lalli merely narrowed his eyes. “That’s not why. It’s because training to be silent is the first step of training to be a scout.”

“Why is he training to– Oh, he wants to go with you, doesn’t he?”

Lalli nodded.

Poor Emil. Well, at least the whole endeavor promised minutes, if not hours, of amusement. “If this is just the first step, what will the next step be? Learning to run for hours on end?”

“That is important too, yes. But before Emil can learn running, he has to learn something else.”

“And what might that be?”

“Not tripping on things every five minutes.”

“What?”

Emil’s voice was unmistakable. It wasn’t just the timbre or the Swedish accent, but also the amount of indignation he could squeeze into a single syllable. Everyone turned to him, but, unusually, Lalli spoke first.

“Emil,” he said. “That is not being silent.”

“I know! But, really, Lalli, there are limits!” Emil stood up. “I thought you were serious! I have been trying so hard! Is this your idea of a joke?”

Lalli blinked at him. “I do not understand. A joke?”

“You know perfectly well…” Emil paused to wave his arms around. “You know that I do not trip on things on purpose! I have tried to stop! It is impossible! Ah, I give up. This is all hopeless.”

With that, he stalked off.

Lalli watched the dramatic departure, wide-eyed, until Emil tripped on a root. Then, he leapt to his feet. “No joke! I have a plan!” He caught up easily, and started to explain something, unfortunately in Finnish.

As Reynir asked for an explanation of the scene, and then for an elaboration of Onni’s first response of “Emil is complaining about something”, Mikkel felt a light punch to his shoulder. As far as requests for his attention went, this was one of Sigrun’s most subtle.

“I like it!” she declared once he had turned towards her. “It’s a nice demonstration of initiative, and, also, I didn’t want to say anything, but explosives specialists who trip a lot tend to have shorter careers. Come to think of it…” She put on her thinking face. “That could be one way to train him, couldn’t it? Making him carry an unstable explosive around all day? He’d have to learn to watch his feet, then.”

“That does sound promising,” Mikkel agreed. “You should suggest it to the two of them. When I am around, preferably.”

Only marginally related to the prompt, but have a drabble.

 :emil: :emil:
Sune stood transfixed, staring at the rainbow colours playing on the surface of the disk his cousin had placed in his hands.  “What is it, Emil?,” he whispered.

“That,” Emil grinned, “came from the Silent World.  Pretty, isn’t it?.”

Sune nodded solemnly, still turning the disk in his hands.

Emil wasn’t about to admit to his little cousin that this disk wasn’t actually one of the gramophones that Mikkel had dumped in the mud.  The Finnish inn they’d been staying in over the winter was using stacks of them for drink coasters, and Emil had pinched a few as keepsakes.

And now, for some reason, I am imagining Sigrun throwing CDs at trolls like she's Xena the Warrior Princess.

(BTW, I want to backtrack. Why did I say my story was Emilalli? It clearly wasn't. There was no more romance in it than in canon.)

If you files the edges they can be really sharp.  Post rash throwing stars...or CD's rather lol

It is Emilalli.  It show Lalli wants to help Emil.  Love manifests in many ways...

Here is a quickie (play )

Onni and Ásta were playing various melodies on Ásta's drum and Onni's kantele.  It was obvious they were trying to sync a joik and a runno together with really bad results...

Ensi looked up from the table where all of the other adults were talking...

You two!!  Go out and play someplace else...

Onni and Ásta got up, placed their instruments on the table..smiled and left...

Play
Reynir came home in the evening. He had been away for several days, so the kids were very excited to see him. “Daddy! You are back!” “Did you get all the way to Bárðarbunga?” “Did you see lava?” “Is there going to be an eruption soon?” “Did you talk to Bárðarbunga?” “Was it hot?” “Was it scary?” “Was it very cold?” “What did you talk about with Bárðarbunga?” Unndís had to step in.

“Let daddy sit down first, children! He must be tired.”

“Are you tired?” “Why did you have to go?” “Why do you need to talk to the spirits?” “What happened when…”

“How is it possible to have so many questions at the same time?” Reynir wondered aloud. Unndís just smiled, but told the kids to go outside for a bit and give their dad a breather.

After Reynir had had a moment to sit down and drink some tea with his wife (yes, he had approached Bárðarbunga but hadn’t succeeded in talking with it, however based on the intel from lesser volcanic spirits in the area he was reasonably sure there was no major eruption about to take place very soon), the children were back.

“Daddy, come play with us! You have been away for so long! We missed you!”

“Um, yes, I missed you too. But I’m tired. It’s a long way to Vatnajökull, you know that.”

“But you haven’t played with us for ages! Daad!”

“Ok, ok, why don’t we play Sleeping Giant?”

“No! You always just sleep for real!”

“Hmm, ok, I know what. Let’s play Volcano.”

“Volcano? How do we play that?”

“Ok, see, I will be the volcano here.” Reynir sat on the floor and drew a blanket over his head. “And you will have to come and see if the volcano is about to go BOOM!” Reynir grabbed one of the children, who was giggling with delight. They played for some time, the kids walking around and on their father, with some “earthquakes” and “eruptions” taking place.

After a while, the family room was surprisingly quiet. Unndís went to take a look. Reynir was sleeping on the floor under a blanket. The kids were sitting next to him, arranging his fiery hair around the floor. “What is this? Have you opened daddy’s braid? Why?”

“Daddy promised to be a volcano for us! He’s sleeping, so he’s having a Hawaiian eruption!”

A Hawaiian eruption is the most peaceful type of volcanic eruption where lava flows from the vent in a relatively gentle fashion, generating lava flows but not much explosions or volcanic ash.

Bárðarbunga is a subglacial stratovolcano with an extensive related volcanic system, located under the Vatnajökull glacier. Several major eruptions are known to have taken place, the most recent one in 2014-2015 was Hawaiian but the Veiðivötn eruption in 1477 was a major explosive eruption and the most deadly one in Icelandic history in terms of loss of human life.

The Y100+ Icelanders would likely be keenly interested in knowing what Bárðarbunga is planning, if it was generating earthquake swarms. So, our favorite Helpful Boy (I suppose man at this point) will try to find out!

dmeck, hmm... How old are Onni and Asta in this story?

Jitter, what an excellent idea for a game! And of course Icelandic kids would know all about different kinds of eruptions. And using Reynir's hair as lava is so clever! Of the writer, escpecially.

Small note: Hawaii has palm trees! Maybe that's where Reynir heard about them, in some text about Hawaiian volcanoes?
Spoiler: show
Incidentally, I got to watch one of these eruptions a few years back, on Oahu. It was slowly eating a shopping mall. (Most of the stores were empty, and a few had been turned into volcano souvenir stores.) But what impressed me the most was the offerings to the volcano goddess people left at the edge of the flow. There were some fruit and flowers, but the majority were: cigarettes, bottles of booze, and... condoms. Fun goddess I guess!

Tehta,

Around 15-16.  I figured that Onni took his sister and cousin to Keuruu when he was late 16-early 17

In my story scheme.  After Surma became a monster.  Ásta and her mother went to Keuruu for a time (Still have not gotten the timeline right, which is why the actual story is not done. Plus I have a tendency to wander in the weeds.)  Ensi came to Keuruu to so some work for them and met Ásta 's mom.  They hit it off and Ensi wanted her mom to come back with her.  Ásta went too. (Ásta and Ensi did not hate each other, but both are very strong willed and butted heads quite a bit.  There was and altercation and  Ensi made Ásta leave the village.  This is before the Kade incident.  Ásta told Onni that they will meet again, but he needed to stay and take care of his sister.  (She had a foreboding, but could not narrow it down)

So Ásta left before the kade and went to the Dalsnes to work.

Jitter, what an excellent idea for a game! And of course Icelandic kids would know all about different kinds of eruptions. And using Reynir's hair as lava is so clever! Of the writer, especially.

The goddess is Pele.  Many Hawaiians revere her and she is said to take many forms (Other than the volcano form.  She is said to take the form of an old woman walking along the highways.  When they pick her up she disappears.   There is also one story  of a house that was spared because its owner was very devout https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/26422500/exclusive-puna-familys-home-spared-by-lava-flows-three-times-in-30-years/

Many people leave offerings for Pele.

https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/people-cant-stop-seeing-pele-in-the-lava/

Hawaii is one of those places where you can feel the magic.  Ohau has gotten built up so much, but is little places you can still feel the power..
We took a tour back in ont of the protected areas when they are slowluy removing all of the invasive plants and putting the native plants back.  It is taking a lit of time, but the one area we went that was done was really amazing

Jitter, I love the volcano game.  It is extremely clever story  I also like the fact the children would not be deterred.  It is also awesome that Reynir still played with his children a bit before he became magma :)

Thanks, I’m happy with the ideas for the game and the hair thing too :) I wanted to write something happy about Reynir’s family life, and I’m sure he would be a great father whenever he is around. I first came up with Sleeping Giant thanks to Wave’s artwork about a similar game in Reynir’s childhood, but when I though about the volcano version I finally got around to even writing it. I’ve been lazy with the weekly prompts, sorry about that. Glad you liked this one :reynir:
