Apparently grosslings smell similar to the animals they used to be (to mosquitoes anyway) so that mosquitoes get fooled to sucking them.
Mosquitoes aren't picky, IIRC they home in on a couple key chemicals only.

Minna also specified that grossling flesh is unsafe to eat - not downright poisonous, but caustic IIRC -, so nobody and nothing wants to eat them.

JoB, but in that case there should be mosquitoes everywhere, or at least near human settlements! There are humans, domestic animals, birds and some mammals too. So if mosquitoes just avoid the grosslings, they could survive even though possibly in smaller numbers.

Maybe they do, and the special thing in the Lehto is how very very many there were.

You're probably right, else how the team members would even know what a mosquitoe was?

Fic idea: while in Iceland, Sigrun learns about mosquitos.

Which of my two lines are you replying to?
Saying that nothing (unRashed) wants to eat grossling flesh does not preclude it occasionally happening by error, nor does it say anything about mosquitoes sucking grossling blood, which is said not to be just caustic but enough to kill them.

JoB, I understood that you meant that mosquitoes would know to not even try (not want) grossling blood, which would mean their food source is diminished but would not lead to the mosquitoes poisoning themselves to extinction.

Hmmmm, now that I reread the info page and Onnis explanations, they do not imply that any mosquitoes present will sample the blood of nearby grosslings, only that the will die if they do, and that they have turned nearly extinct in many places due to the lack of noninfected animals to feed off of.

(Onnis "... so they don't" could be referring to Reynirs suspicion that mosquitoes might carry the Rash, rather than his own, immediately preceding hypothetical scenario of some of them sucking troll blood.)

Hi! Anyone suggested a prompt for the next week yet? Because I'll be on vacations  :sparkle: ^-^ :sparkle: , and it may be complicated to participate...

If no one has an idea, may I propose "Beach / Shore"? Of course this idea has no relation, at all, with me being at the Algarve in said week... :)

Grey, you may! The rule says first come first served :)

So the prompt nest week is Beach / Shore!

I will also be on vacation, which may or may not result in me actually doing some writing. I’ve been floating half-formed ideas for several of the prompts now, hopefully I get something actually “on paper” :)

Thanks, Jitter and dmeck! :)
Jitter, I hope your vacations are great, and may the muses be with you! I miss your stories!

On my side, I'm not planning to take the laptop with me, so anything will have to be done with my phone... Let's see if there are any grosslings around for inspiration. Usually I find, every year, several human/shrimp hybrids on the beach...  8)

Thanks, JoB! You're absolutly right! I already downloaded the protective token to my phone, and will arm myself with those ice-made weapons as often as possible... ;)

I made bourbon slushies one winter (Cram a glass full of snow and pour bourbon on top..)
Or in the Finger Lakes in NY they sell wine slushies (Very sweet, but yum)
