Greyi, your approach has the distinct problem that it has a small chance of the pregnancy to start on infected gametes. Which might be interesting but not in a nice way.

JoB, on the contrary, the sorting system would make the Dagrenning program more efficient as it would be possible to use more donors, when offspring immunity would not need to be ascertained by parental immunity. But still the gametes would have to come from somewhere. A couple with no immunity genetics would not benefit from any sorting because all gametes would disqualify.

Winner of the better late than never award
Spoiler: show

Sigrun looked out the window and was watching the midsummer festivities.
There were bonfires everywhere.  With the sounds of the revelry, that added to the mood.
I really need to go join them she mused.
A breeze came through the window,  she shivered and wrapped the blankets tighter.
She rolled over on the bed and thought
"Damn Summer Cold!"

It would move the threshold of who is a suitable biological parent for having a shot at immune offspring from the current "only immunes need to apply, and we'll come looking for them abroad" to "some non-zero rate of immune gametes is good enough" - and while we have no hard numbers on that, we would have to assume that plenty of Icelanders would satisfy that condition (because, assuming random mixing of immunity genes pre-Rash, an almost-zero rate of partial immunity genes would quickly lead to zero immunes). In other words, most Icelanders could bond with any local they want, have a try at getting biological children with the sorting method, and if that fails because one of them is really totally free of immunity genes, they could (relatively) easily get a domestic donor. I suppose you could still call that a "Dagrenning Program" if you insist, but.

I will contribute some ancient / folklore stuff. I have no knowledge whether these particular sites relate to Midsummer or the Solstice, but in this case I refer to the fact that we went to the site on the Solstice day :)

So, here’s an ancient Baltic mystery for you:

This place is a jatulintarha or jungfrudans in Nagu (Finnish: Nauvo) in the Finnish archipelago. Hundreds of these mysterious sites remain in Finland and Scandinavia, and some are known elsewhere in Northern Europe and the Kola Peninsula and White Sea area. The ones that have been aged in Finland were built in 1300’s onwards, but some have been suggested to be prehistoric. There are around 200 of them known in Finland alone, all on the Baltic coast and almost all are on islands. Similarly the ones in Sweden and the about 20 that are known in Norway are coastal. Who built them? For what purpose? We don’t know. They have been studied and several Doctoral theses have been written, but no consensus has been reached.

In Finland suggested purposes include ceremonial or magical use, navigation markings (I don’t think the Nagu one is visible to the sea even if the trees were cleared) or simply as a way to pass time. Suggested magical uses could be good luck charms or a way to bind malicious spirits, and fertility magic (it’s always fertility magic, isn’t it?). The Finnish name jatulintarha means “giant’s garden” or “giant’s corral” which might relate to the spirits explanation, however there are also other stone remains that are called work of giants, so it doesn’t necessarily refer to any use.

The Fenno-Swedish name jungfrudans means “maiden’s dance” or “maiden dance”. It’s been speculated that young women and men would dance in the labyrinth, with the objective for the young man to lead the maiden out of the labyrinth. Again, just passtime? Courtship ritual? Fertility magic? We don’t know.

They are constructed by laying of stones to form the pattern, and the path is between the rings of stones.

These are not mazes in the sense that there are no dead ends. It’s just one path circling into the center.  The center in the one I visited is marked with a little larger stone.

Most of them have this kidney shape and 7 rings, but variations are known. Some are simple spirals, those tend to be the newest ones built in the 1800’s or even 1900’s. They are usually about 10 m across but vary from a few meters to about 20. The Nagu one is 14 m wide.

While their significance is not known, the pattern must have been important because from 1400’s, pictures of them were painted on the walls of churches along with lots of other stuff. This photo is from the church of Korpo, the island community (previously municipality) neighboring Nagu.

We visited the church on the same day so I was delighted to see these. Interestingly, again it is not known why these and other paintings were done in the churches. Many of the paintings are outright weird, I’ll add a few more pictures under cut at the end.

The pattern resembles the Troy Towns known in the UK, but the UK labyrinths were cut in turf rather than built by laying of stones. Only three remain there, but several others have been recorded before they were lost. Their timeline is not known either, the turf needs to be recut which results in losing the hints to original age. The Wikipedia article on Troy Towns mentions that there have been turf cut labyrinths in Denmark as well, so maybe there is a relation?

The pattern items is well known from many cultures. One more interesting site I have visited is the Rocky Valley near Tintagel in Cornwall. There are carvings on a vertical rock face, of unknown age and purpose. And a familiar pattern:

In what little I have learned about the Rocky Valley carvings, no mention was made to Troy Towns or their Nordic counterparts. But who knows?

Edited to add links to articles and more medieval paintings from the Korpo church.

Jitter,
Those are amazing.  I would love to see them in person.  Thank you for sharing!!

The 5th one down look like a representation of "the tree of life" Does Finnish folklore have some such?  I know it is a common theme in many ancient religions.

When Christianity was trying to take over the world.  They absorbed may ancient customs.  (Xmas and Easter are the most notable, but there are many)  Could the designs in churches be something like that?

Onto google I go....

It was a fascinating spot! We had a very nice couple of days in the archipelago and this was one of the highlights. But, I didn’t feel the powerful silence (great wording!) there, even on Solstice day. The church was both beautiful and interesting too. (I added some links, and photos from the church to my post). And the archipelago itself is truly a Wonder of Nature.

Jitter, amazing update! (An important question remains: did you and your husband dance in the maze? I would have been tempted.)
My tongue-in-cheek explanation for weird drawings in church is that they seem fun to look at, and so would keep people entertained during boring sermons. And those mazes look fun to draw, too, like celtic knots.

BTW, what is this week's prompt? Not sperm-sorting I hope. But something related to mazes, ancient sites, rituals?

Tehta, we just walked it. No fertility magic for me at this point, thankyouverymuch :) I have enough children (and it’s too late for me anyways, or else the magic would be beyond summon-Kokko-to-another-country level) and my sons are too young to make me a grandma. Or rather they are old enough for it to happen but preferably not for years yet! We actually joked about having to be careful, it being Solstice day and all :) Although in hindsight I realize that the possible effects (via sons) will not become apparent for a while, so, exciting times I suppose. Would be even more exciting if they ever went anywhere from the house.

I like the idea of ancient / sacred sites and/or rituals!

how about this week we pick occupations?

Any number of Mikkel's current/past ones
Emil being a cleanser
Onni/Lalli the turmoils of being a mage etc.
Or any of the post-rash occupations out there (maybe crime in the post rash world)

or
I like the idea of ancient / sacred sites and/or rituals!

is good too...(now that my cold is almost gone...)

So what's the prompt? Anyone want to cast the deciding vote?

I would be for doing both the ideas suggested, in either order. (If we pick something for next week now, then we don't have to go through this next week!)

Tehta, that’s a good point!

So, the prompt for this week is Occupation(s)

Next week’s prompt will be Sacred sites and/or rituals (let’s try and keep this in mind, ok? I think we have made a similar decision and then forgotten it in the past :) )

Jitter, those pictures are amazing! I didn't knew about those circles. I notice that the central area is slightly higher, and wonder if there's some relation with those buddhist temples where people gradually ascend to enlightment as they walk on a spiralling path towards the higher area at the middle.

Now, for this week... I was convinced that we would have ancient sites first, and occupations on the next week... but no problem! Here goes mine:

Occupation: Explorer

Shall our brave explorer enter the great door?

(loosely inspired by Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness")
