Well one can do the angsty stuff and one can do the happy fluffy stuff.

The angsty stuff always makes me want to cry. 

But I am definitely in the happy fluffy camp.

Incidentally, just that one page about sockpuppets on FanLore speaks volumes of what I mean when I said fandoms can become messy over many many interpretations. I mean, ”a personally motivated attack on a known enemy”!! We don’t want any of that!

dmeck, no need to apologize. Your joke was amusing! I just wanted to share my Fandom Old knowledge of sockpuppets.

I haven't seen the enemy thing so much, but have witnessed people using sockpuppets to (try to) organize fandom-bought gifts for themselves (a laptop, in one case) and people flaming themselves to get, as fanlore says, attention and comfort.

Heh, I am amused to see this usage of the term, since to me a sockpuppet is a child’s toy, a small handpuppet made, quite literally from an old sock, maybe with embroidered features and button eyes sewn on. It is operated by putting a hand inside and using the fingers to open and shut the mouth, wriggle the thing around and such actions.

Róisín, I'm sure the sockpuppet in the fandoms is named for that toy. The sockpuppet alias is like the toy held by the actual person to pretend being another person speaking.
