lwise, I'll comment more on AO3, but I think you have more than one betrayal in there! Siv and Torb working at cross purposes counts, too.

Dmeck, apart from commenting on AO3, I meant to say that the Kade story was my favourite of your pieces! It's so lively and dark.

Also, I am glad you enjoyed the angst! And I think that you know that both Jitter and I have many stories where Emil and Lalli end up together, so maybe you meant together in this particular setting where they break up and Lalli runs off into the Silent World? My 'Unmasking' was a different and less literary take on it, and the whole double-drabble series started as an alternate, darker ending for my 'Future Imperfect'. But if you're looking for Emilalli in general, then I would second Roisin's suggestion of Onnenlintu's wotk. Kasvatus is the Emilalli gold standard for me.

Anyway... apart from helping Jitter finish Withering, I wrote another quick piece about another Emilalli betrayal. It's a triple-drabble, inspired by a hike I did a couple of days ago.

Spoiler: show
There was another clatter, followed by a burst of Swedish curses. Emil had tripped and fallen, yet again. When he didn’t get back up immediately, Lalli stopped walking and turned around.

“I thought you said this was a shortcut!” said Emil while massaging his ankle. “This isn’t even a path, it’s just rocks. Very unstable ones.”

“It’s a dry riverbed. Unstable rocks are expected.”

“So why did you pick this way? You know how I hate rocks.”

“I know. That’s exactly why I picked it.” Confronted with a look of utter confusion, Lalli decided to explain. “You are bad at walking on rocks. You always trip on them, even on paths that have very few. So I thought you might just need more rock-waking practice, and this riverbed is perfect for that.”

“You actually planned this torture?” Emil’s mouth turned down at the edges. “In cold blood? Lalli, it’s not working. My balance is getting worse, if anything, now that I have bruises on my bruises. Can we turn around and try a different path?”

“Not if we want to reach the village before dusk. It’s just another hour or so.” Lalli considered the estimate. ”Maybe two hours, at your pace? Come on.” He offered Emil his hand.

Emil ignored it pointedly as he stumbled back to his feet.

The rest of the walk passed in silence, broken only by the occasional rock- and Emil-fall. Even the cursing grew sparser. Over time, Lalli grew worried, especially when he noticed that Emil was trying to conceal a limp, rather than exaggerate it while complaining loudly.

Maybe… Maybe he had made a mistake? Maybe, in spite of his good intentions and his sound reasoning, he had miscalculated somehow?

A thought occurred. Was this the sort of situation where a person should apologize?

Thank you for your kind words.  I know I am not the greatest writer.  Probably from writing technical documentation for so long.  I at least hope the story’s premise and such wins over people.

I have read future imperfect and always like that Emil and Lalli over come much. I have read a few more.  I need to reread them, as it all becomes a jumble in my head

I think jitter’s Ao3 name is jiiri.  I read the spirit house.  All I liked very much

I have to look for Tanist’s stories.

I loved Onnenlintu’s series.

dmeck, I think you do yourself a disservice. I think you have some strong writing skills: your stuff feels very fresh to me. (Something I myself must work on, since I edit everything 1000 times. As Jitter can confirm...) But then, I guess feeling dissatisfied with one's writing is par for the course for most writers.

Another Emilalli story I like very much is "About Emil, and How He Picked Up a Little Finnish". Oh, and "on the salt-burnt sands". Probably many more I can't remember right now.

Dmeck, I agree with Tehta, your writing is a delight! Please keep it up. If you feel like you have some weak areas, well, so you know what will improve your writing? Writing!

I am indeed Jiiri. My main EmiLalli series is Toivosaari, but the Spirit House centering on Reynir and Onni and how they learn more about magic is in the same continuum. The little Hypocrisy fic is a bridging piece but I have one proper bridge in the works. It’s been so for a long while now so I don’t know if it will ever happen, but still. Maybe one day.

Misunderstandings and Yule Preparations are one-off EmiLalli fics i.e. not in the same continuum as Toivosaari. I seem to like to write about how they understand their feelings are mutual, so I have several takes on that.

Kasvatus by Onnenlintu is in a league of its own really. I hope my Toivosaari doesn’t take too much from him!

Oh and lwise, I think there are various betrayals in your story! The whole premise of stealing children sort of qualifies even though your tone makes it clear it wouldn’t be a dark deed :) But parents pushing to give their children away are certainly betraying their kids, even if the kids want to go!

Well, you could call it giving away the children, but you could also call it giving the children for fostering, which used to be a traditional way to give the children a leg up in society.  At least, that's what Siv would claim it was.

I want to thank you all for the kind words.  I and not intending to compliment fish, but I am very unsure of my self (a lot).

So everyone's kind words really touches me, and I am truly grateful.

Plus I love hearing and seeing everyone's stories.  This is definitely a bright spot.

If people want a different prompt, that is fine.
But I wrote something already (It was waiting to come out...haha)

If there is a different prompt, please let me know

dmeck, I don't think there is a formal prompt approval process. Actually I think it's first come, first serve. And your prompt has a nice one!

I also like your fic! Although I notice you left out the redheads. I mean, I suppose Reynir is grateful for the chance to help, but Sigrun... She is probably grateful for all the chances to use her skills? Or for all the mages she has managed to acquire like vacation souvenirs?

Hmm you are right.  I need to add Sigrun and Reynir to have a complete set.

I will think of something  :reynir: :sigrun:

Dmeck, another beautiful one! Especially the one on Onni. I agree, it is Reynir’s nature and part of his magic to be giving.  Reynir’s inner monologue (Onni! Onni! Onni!) is great, and rings true for Reynir. And I like the way you describe Onni’s haven reflecting his mood.

And, Lalli the cat being Happy that Emil is warm 😆 (along with his other good qualities). I chuckled out loud.

Plus, Lalli’s thought about how Emil’s people noise shields him from other people’s noise is very insightful.

All in all I like this one very much (again!).

Like tehta said, there is no prompt approval, the first one to suggest it, gets to set it. Only… you promised to write another one if there is a different prompt, so maybe I should put in another? :)

BTW if I may suggest, you could rate your work at G (or T if you are unsure), because non-rated always asks for permission to proceed. If you put in something that requires a higher rating later, you can change it.

I really think Onni is like a beignet (doughnut) crunchy outside and soft and mushy inside.
I think that may be why Reynir is as powerful as he is.

Thank you.  That is good to know.  I did not realize it did that.
