JoB: Taru/Reynir/Onni new OT3? (Tareynni?)
I think Onni doesn't like Taru much, though, for obvious reasons.

Jitter: Reynir decorated his tunic for his own benefit, and he wasn't wearing it during the exchange, so I guess the staves will only kick in NOW. Maybe as JoB described, maybe not. (I'll have to continue this story at some point this month, I guess.)

Oh, and I didn't say this, thegreyarea, but you should definitely continue!

New clothes

“Lalli, I must insist. At home it’s ok to go in your old rags, but we are about to meet people! Please come with me to the store!”
“I hate new clothes! They chafe and are itchy and smell all wrong!”
“I know I know, but sometimes needs must!”
“I will not try anything on. It’s even worse!”
“Well, no wonder all your new stuff chafes, if it’s not the right size for you. Please, I’ll help you pick something.”

Half an hour of bickering later

“No more! We’ve been here for hours! Just buy all of this and let’s go!”
“Just take my word for it. Try these on and you will find ones that feel nice. Just feel this shirt. Isn’t it nice and smooth?”
“Why is it pink?”
“Why not?”
“I am a scout. I hide. I wear grey.”
“You are not scouting all the time! Besides this is perfect for your colors. Wouldn’t you like some change every now and then?”
“No”
“I promise I’ll get you a korvapuusti right after this, if you at least try it. Please.”
“Hrmph”

The shirt was perfect. Lalli had never worn anything as comfortable before.

“Just look into the mirror! It’s lovely with your complexion and hair!”

“Five of these shirts please”
“Five? But you just said…”
“I like it.”
“Well, I guess a change from all grey to all pink is a change…”
“Now, where is my korvapuusti?”

Korvapuusti is Finnish cinnamon roll bun.

Taru and Onni are cousins!

Which reminds me of what someone told on the Disqus comments.

Q: How do the Icelanders keep from getting intimate with too close relatives, when they have no family names, a limited list of first names and therefore also patronyms, and a small population?

A: If you are first cousins, you know. If you are second cousins, your mother knows. Everyone is your third cousin.

So, best find your mate from, say, Finland!

In Finnish we say “put your chin down and head for new disappointments”. It’s probably Onni’s catchphrase. (Yes it is a joking version of “chin up and forward” kind of thing but I have heard the chin down version many more times).

Jitter, yep, that seems very in character. I would really like to see an illustration, though. (Who's the helpful shopper? Tuuri? A close friend?)

Opaque, your Onni doesn’t need runes to be lucky in love. Just a tighter shirt. (I love the body language in the whole sequence.)

6.10.2021 Familiar

I had planned to post another lighthearted dialogue, but that’s my comfort zone, so let’s step out of it, shall we? 300 words of present tense, for some reason. (I tried rewriting as past tense, but I think the present gives it a touch of shellshocked quality, which seems appropriate.)

Everything in Keuruu is weird. The houses are too tall and too close together, leaving almost no room for trees. There are too many people, and they are all strange and all dress alike. Even Onni and Tuuri are different. Tuuri is too quiet, and Onni spends all his time worrying and crying and telling Lalli and Tuuri not to worry. It’s confusing, and wrong.

There is one tree, behind the house they now live in, that is kind of okay. Lalli spends a lot of time in it, watching the leaves and the clouds behind them and ignoring weird Keuruu.

One day he comes back from scouting to find his tree changed. Someone has tied two ropes to a plank and hung it up from his favourite branch.

“It’s a swing!” Onni tells him and Tuuri. “Just like next to the schoolhouse, remember?”

Lalli shrugs.

“Do you want to try it?”

Tuuri shakes her head. Lalli silently agrees with her, but watching Onni try to smile cheerfully is terrible, so he gets on the swing to make it stop.

It is a good swing. It takes Lalli only a few moments to find his preferred height and rhythm. Some moments later, he finds a familiar sense of peace and rightness. It feels so natural that he can hardly believe he is still in Keuruu.

“I want to try, too!” says Tuuri. “Let me on!”

Lalli doesn’t want to stop. But her excitement, too, feels right: this is how she should be. So, he jumps off, and watches her take his place.

She starts off slowly, as usual, but is soon begging Onni for some pushes to help her go higher. And higher. And, shortly, Onni’s smile is not so weird anymore.

It is the first good day in months.

Work has been whupping my butt, but I managed to do Day 4's prompt ...on Day 5.  I do realise we are now on Day 6.  Ah well, I may catch up.

DAy 4 - Destruction:  Just another day of "playing Cleansers" at chez Västerström

Wave, oh no, I can imagine although I'm not sure I want to They cause destruction even when they are playing something that is in theory quiet so playing demolition is going to be dangerous.

Opaque, I really like this art too! You are multitalented!

tehta, bittersweet and very them! Especially I like how Lalli pays attention to Tuuri's sad mood and feels better when Tuuri feels better.

This is kind of meh, but have some Tuuri enthusiasm. The point was to just throw something together, right? Hope someone gets something out of this.

Familiar

Finally she leaves behind the compound. FINALLY to see something else than old, boring Keuruu, old, boring Keuruu people and old, boring Onni! Lalli isn't particularly upbeat as a companion, but soon she will meet loads of new people. She stands on deck, quivering with excitement, straining to see every new thing beyond the lakegate. Now they are through, and it's so... so... mehhhh. Darkness, same stars as inside, same lake as inside. "You'll be able to see things once the sun is up!"
"I wanted to see things now!"

Finally they are past the seclusions and in a safe-ish (oooo it gives her heebie jeebies to think she's actually outside of a safe zone at the moment!) area, and the windows are opened. She'll see the remains of a proper old time city! She stands at the ready at the window, to finally witness the... logs... everywhere... obscuring the view to anything... "I wanted to see things now!"

Finally the barge has been left behind and she can see shore! It has lots of interesting tree stumps. And more tree stumps! And barges on the river! It's... still boring. "I wanted to see things now!"

Taru tells them there used to be tens of thousands of people just in this one city. More than all of Finland AND all of Sweden together. The ruins look unfamiliar. For one thing, they are hugely tall. Taru says they used to be big houses. Well, it makes sense that they would have big houses, to fit so many people in. Still, it doesn't look that different. It's just houses, a bit different houses, but... No, she's learning about the past and it's great!

The big ship is a disappointment, as they don't get out of the river liner at all. But in the morning they are in a different country! They walk along a bridge to meet actual Swedish persons! They will all be so tall and beautiful and... the first person greeting her must be their cleanser Emil. He's so, so... confused. And he smells of food. And not very tall at all, and... well his hair is fabulous. And he seems nice. And there are maps on the wall and they show... the same shipping routes they just followed.

Thanks to Lalli, they make the train. She manages to secure a window seat! And the windows stay open, because the Swedes are so blessed. So she gets to see a foreign country! There's a mountain! And another one! And an interesting rock! And yet another mountain! It's very very interesting, because they are Swedish rocks.

She tries to stay interested, but Lalli's comments draw her attention. Why can't Lalli behave! But nooo, now she missed a dead troll! The only thing so far that wasn't exactly the same as everything at home.

This adventure is turning out so boring. Why is everything exactly the same everywhere?

(Oddly enough, my best light is often the ones by my shower. There are like, three insanely bright LED halogens back there, and I can get a decent photo if I can prop the pad onto my towel rail. Using natural light in my apartment usually ends up being obviously directional and/or blue, with loss of quality when I apply filters to compensate. *shrug*)

Yes, when I take pictures too late, they turn out blue. But I usually don´t have the problem with the directional light - unless I use a lamp as the lightsource... :'D That also tends to result in the sheer unavoidability to get your own shadow on the picture and some weird light-reflections if the lamp is too strong...
(I did try the bathroom-light though now that you suggested it. The lamps there are quite bright, but there´s several. I had three seperate shadows on the picture I took. I´m afraid that wasn´t very sucessfull...)

And oh what sweet chaos the Västerström-household will now fall into... *quickly hides evidence of catapulting tiny things across the room as a kid*

Jitter, I did like your little story about Tuuri! A very familiar (heh :'D) feeling at the beginning of a journey. I enjoy the two scenes to the previous promts as well. You somehow manage to convey so much with mainly dialogue! And the scene still plays in my head as if you wrote every movement down. And I agree with catbirds, the poem for "masks" is written in quite an interesting poetry-format!

tehta, is there such thing as too much fluff? I don´t think so. I enjoy your little scenes very much, and I like the continuation between some of them!

Opaque, I enjoy both your art and poetry! Kiki and Jiji´s poses look really natural! And say, in the mask-poem, did you have a specific mask from the game in mind for each line or did you mean all of the masks in general?

Grey, oooh, what a chilling story! I do wonder if "to be continued" means continuing Gregor´s story or continuing with another metamorphosis. (I... only have third-party-information about the source-material, in case it wasn´t obvious. ) I´m looking foreward to it either way!

To get to posting my contributions from over the past few days. I´ll try posting them in smaller amounts in the future, but I´m also insanely busy this week, so I might have to do another huge art-dump on monday. We´ll see... ^^'

Spoiler: 3:Masks • show

Here you are writing deep and profound poetry surrounding masks, and now I´m about to ruin it all by throwing a silly piece of fanart at you, I´m sorry...

I´ve been really getting into Splatoon lately, a game-franchise set in a post-apocalyptic earth where humans have died out and various sea-life evolved into humanoid creatures. You may play as an Inkling (like the character on the left) or an Octoling (like the character on the right). The only difference between these two options are their tentacles, ears and eyeliner, and that you have to pay for a DLC if you want to play an Octoling... :')
Most aspects of the game involve covering everything and everyone in paint.

My Covid-trained eye of course immediately noticed how many different face-masks there are to customize your played character with. There´s even an FFP2-mask! (And the last update that involved clothing happened way before the pandemic at that. :'D I´m assuming these pieces are a result of the grafitti-artist-vibe they´re going for.)

Spoiler: 4: Destruction • show

I also settled for a video-game-enemy. This one´s a Guardian Stalker from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These machines went rogue a hundred years before the events of the game and destroyed everything in their path. To this day, almost no one dares entering the ruins they left behind.
(There´s also little things more anxiety-inducing in this game than hearing one of these guys´ signature music *shudders*)

Spoiler: 5: New Clothes • show

Again, same game as the previous one. I found a scrapped concept art for an owlet-Rito (Rito = a race of bird-people in the Zelda-franchise), and it was so cute I couldn´t help myself but to turn it into a fully fledged character! Then I designed their family. Overall I just put way too much thought into it. I might have a problem.
Anyways here they are rocking some "new" clothes, aka some of their dad´s clothes that they stole.

Whenever I have no idea what to draw for a day during YoinkTober, I pick 3-4 markers I like and design a witch-character based on only those colors. (All in the spirit of the Spooky Season, you see.) I have a nice little collection by now. Since today´s prompt was so wonderfully witchy, I decided to do that today.
Here we have an earth-witch with her fennec-familiar:

Wave: As I said on Discord, I think we all know that this is a popular game with the triplets.

Jitter: Why are you mehing? I think the underlying idea behind this story is very good! (Tuuri's expectations were pretty high, weren't they?)

Mirasol, all of your works are good, but the earth witch is my favorite. She, and her familiar. I like both there poses, and the color scheme is beautiful, and a very good pick for her earth magic.

tehta, Lalli’s personal shopper is Emil, hence the enthusiasm on color suiting Lalli’s own. BTW I’d like to point out that Lalli doesn’t disapprove the clothing being pink in particular, but being of a not-entirely-camo color in general. Out of colors they could have available in a normal shop in Finland, some sort of dusty pink could look good on him. The yellows typical of plant dyes tend to be more of spicy yellow which wouldn’t be ideal with Lalli’s hair.

Here’s a photo I took in a museum when there was an exhibition about life in iron age Finland (around when the Scandinavians were being Vikings) showing colors they could have had in Finland at the time. These are on wool.



Actually the pale yellow in the middle is not like the plant yellows I was thinking about and could be good on Lalli. But the soft shirts were pink!

Also thanks for comments, I’m glad you liked it. I was amused that Tuuri didn’t seem to be very impressed by the train, although that had to be the most different thing by far, at that point of the journey
