Queen Yoko you're sweet! Thank you. Really what I wanted to fix was the lighting effects. I'm terrible at figuring out how to do that. But the rest of it looks good enough. For now. I love drawing and really want to keep improving. Maybe make my own comic someday.

I'm feeling a bit bleak so I'm spreading the mood.

War

"Headquarters, this is Þór. Multiple vessels approaching from the south and eastwardly directions. Please advise."
"Headquarters. Þór, stand by, prepare to take action. Ægir has been dispatched and is coming towards you. Ægir will take the east, you are to cover the southern direction. Report when you have visual."
"Headquarters, this is Þór. We have visual of the first vessel. It's British, but they are not fishing. They have steady course towards north, no equipment in the water. They are raising flags.
They rise Victor ("I require assistance") and Kilo ("I wish to communicate with you")."
"Headquarters here. Raise November ("Negative") and Lima ("Stop immediately")"
"Þór. November and Lima raised. They raise November.
Headquarters, this is Þór. The boat is keeping course northward."
"Headquarters to Þór. Intercept their course."

"British vessel, this is the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Þór. Icelandic waters are off-limits for all craft. Iceland is in lockdown. Please adjust your course accordingly!!"
"British vessel, this is the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Þór. Do not approach Icelandic waters. Turn back immediately!"
"British vessel, this is the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Þór. Do not approach Icelandic waters. Turn back! Turn back!"

"Headquarters, this is Þór. The British vessel is not responding to orders."
"Þór, this is hedquarters. Fire warning shots."

"British vessel, this is the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Þór. Do not approach Icelandic waters. This is your final warning. Turn back!"

WARNING SHOTS

"Headquarters, this is Þór. They are not responding. They are keeping course."
"Þór, this is headquarters. Take any action necessary to stop approaching craft. Repeat, take any action."
"Headquarters, this is Þór. They are keeping course. People are coming out to the deck."
"Headquarters, this is Þór! There are people on the deck, at least four children! Please advise!"
"Þór, this is headquarters. Stopping the vessel is utmost priority. Take any action."
"Headquarters, this is Þór! They are not turning despite warning shots. Advise!"
"Þór, this is headquarters. Fire at the vessel."
"Headquarters, this is Þór! There are children on the vessel! We cannot fire!"
"Þór, this is headquarters. Fire at the vessel. Under no circumstance can we allow any incoming craft."
"Headquarters, this is Þór. With all due respect but have you lost your mind? This is a civilian craft with civilians on board."
"Þór, this is headquarters. Fire at the vessel. Under no circumstance can we allow any incoming craft."
"Headquarters, we… this is not…"
"This is headquarters hailing all ICGVs. Authorisation to fire at any approaching craft if they refuse to alter course."
"What!? Sorry… headquarters, this is Ægir. We have several civilian craft flying Norwegian, British, German and other flags. We cannot…"
"Headquarters, this is Þór. Another vessel approaching. They are flying… they are flying Icelandic flag!"
"This is headquarters hailing all ICGVs. Your orders are to fire at ANY approaching craft if they refuse to alter course."
"But have you… headquarters, this is Ægir. These countries are NATO allies. Have you talked to NATO."
"No, they didn't… Headquarters here. We tried to reach NATO. They are not answering. We are on our own."
"Headquarters, this is Þór. We are preparing to fire. This will be considered an act of war!"
"Yes."
"We cannot be at war! We are Iceland! We don't go to war!"
"This is headquarters hailing all ICGVs. Your orders are to fire at ANY approaching craft if they refuse to alter course."

Wow Jitter! That had me hooked.  I'm getting flashbacks of the Icelandic battle cruiser.
Firing on the boats from neighboring countries would be hard enough but sinking a boat with their own people is just... rough.
Very compelling story!

Thanks guys :) I always worry whether the all dialogue format works. I hear and see it in my mind, but I can’t forward that to the reader :)

(Actually, you can omit both parameters (image will be inserted at its original size), and if you do want to resize it, IIRC there's a bug affecting some clients that is best countered by only giving width= and not height= (the missing parameter is then calculated so as to keep the proper aspect ratio).)

Yeah, I checked to make sure before putting in the “We don’t go to war” :) Iceland was invaded by the British during WWII but apparently happy about it (Denmark, part of which Iceland was until 1944, were invaded by Germany).

Iceland as a country has never had an army. The Icelandic Coast Guard is a civilian security force, although it is the closest thing they do have to an army. Since 2006 the military defense has been carried out by various allies doing a rotation, prior to 2006 there was an American-manned Nato base at Keflavik.

So the Cod Wars is the closest thing to a military conflict Iceland has been involved in basically ever. Some altercations happened and there was some material damage, including ramming attacks by vessels of either side, but only one life was lost and this was an accident.

Wow! Some many amazing contributions!
I'll comment later, because I'm doing my best to finish my story, that turned a bit more complicated than I thought but...

("And when they haven't, Grey? Tell me just one story that was simple and streightforward.")
("Shush, conscience!")

...but I'll publish it very soon, even if the break is over, proofread or not.

("you're so stuborn!" Never happy with the first draft, always trying to improve it! Should have published it as it was and... hmm...hmm!)
(*putting hand over conscience mouth* "Shh! OK you may be right. Let me finish this. We talk later.")

So I'm very happy with this break! See you soon! :)

I am a tiny bit late, but in my defense I just joined and got permission to see this board and this challenge.

The Art of War, on a Peaceful Evening (An Adventure One Story)

Spoiler: show
“Reading a book again, Mikkel?” asked Sigrun, throwing herself down onto one of the folding chairs arranged by the fire. “Have you been having trouble falling asleep?”

Mikkel stretched. “This one might interest you, actually. It’s called, ‘The Art of War’.”

“What, like pictures of war? Let me see.” Sigrun shifted her chair closer and grabbed the item in question. “Ugh, no, it’s writing. With some extra-small writing on the side.”

“Annotations, yes.” Mikkel retrieved the book. “And it’s not an art book; it’s a book about how to be a good general. A very ancient one, apparently.”

“A good general, hmm? Well, what does it say? Anything interesting?”

“Let’s see…” Mikkel leafed through the pages. “How about: ‘All armies prefer high ground to low and sunny places to dark.’”

“What? Is this a book for complete idiots? Even Braidy knows that.”

“You are right, it does seem rather obvious… Although, I would not have expected that to be so important back in ancient times. Perhaps they--” Noting Sigrun’s glazed-over expression, Mikkel searched the book again. “So, what would you say to: ‘In war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.’ That, too, seems obvious, and yet…”

“Right,” Sigrun nodded. “That’s a tricky one. Took even me a while, and a few scars, before I learned it. Want to see?”

“Maybe later,” said Mikkel. “Oh, here’s one you might like: ‘Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.’”

“You are right, I do like that! A thunderbolt. Makes me think of Thor. And, you know, my plans have been called impenetrable before.”

“I… do not doubt it. So then, how do you feel about: ‘Ponder and deliberate before you make a move.’?”

“Sounds fine, as long as you don’t deliberate too long.”

“Oddly enough, the book agrees: ‘Cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.’”

“What’s odd about that? It seems like a pretty clever book. Maybe you should show it to our young warrior; he might learn something. Hey, EMIL!” Sigrun shouted.

There was a loud crash from the other side of the tank, followed by a second, quieter crash. “I’ll be there in a minute!” shouted Emil’s voice.

Mikkel kept leafing through the book. “Oh, here’s a good one: ‘If there is disturbance in the camp, the general's authority is weak.’”

When Sigrun failed to reply, he glanced up to see her disappearing around the vehicle. Sighing, he turned back to his reading. What he found gave him pause...

‘At the critical moment, the leader of an army acts like one who has climbed up a height and then kicks away the ladder behind him. He carries his men deep into hostile territory before he shows his hand. He burns his boats and breaks his cooking-pots; like a shepherd driving a flock of sheep, he drives his men this way and that, and nothing knows whither he is going. To muster his host and bring it into danger:--this may be termed the business of the general.’

Could it be… Could it be that General Trond had made it his general’s business to damage that bridge, locking them in the danger of the Silent World?

(I put it behind the spoiler because it's > 500 words, and that seemed too long for a post. But wow, while writing this I learned that several of the quotes I associate with The Art of War are not even in the book! Thanks, Mikkel, for improving my education.)

WAR AND PEACE: ONNI

Peace is the lehto. For a little while
To sleep in safety, deep enough to dream.
Even if dreams are dark and full of pain
That still is better than the watching sleep
Resting the body, yet not soul or mind
That’s needed in the forest, just to live.

Leaving that sanctuary, I return
To war, in what was once my childhood home.
These lakes and forests, precious to my heart,
Now overrun with monsters, bleak and drear.
My family and friends gone many a year
But for the few who still may hunt me down.

Yet must I live, and gain the victory
So those I love may live, or be set free.

This was soo nice to read. The solemn tone is probably how Onni narrates his life in his head. It's a very inspiring piece you have there.  :onni:
