So here's an article I wish I'd read a little over a month ago: "The Full Story of My Abuse from SuperPsyguy, CrikeyDave, and others" by Pixelated Diglett (Content warning: Sexual exploitation of a minor, miscellaneous verbal abuse and cyberbullying. Also death threats from one of the other people discussed.)

I have no idea how to fact-check something like this, but given that Dave is a self-described "pervert" and that the drawbacks of going public with this kind of story (true or not) would seem to outweigh the benefits of making it up, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

@Jitter, I'll leave it up to your discretion whether MAiZ should stay on the list. For my part, I'm not comfortable recommending it anymore.

Oh no!

Linebyline, that is a good question. On the one hand it is possible and allowable to appreciate a work without appreciating the author. On the other, with webcomics new readership is directly more income (although usually very very small income) to the author, so it’s more concrete support than getting ”Ender’s Game” from the library or used books shop.

I don’t feel like saying we cannot have a work by a controversial author recommended here. However, I definitely don’t feel like saying YOU have to keep the recommendation now that you have said you are uncomfortable with it.

Possible options on how to deal with this include
- removing the recommendation completely, in which case I’ll take it off the list in opening post as well
- editing the recommendation by putting the recommendation itself into spoiler, and adding that link and your comment that you don’t want to endorse this anymore but here’s the info if someone is interested. In this case I’ll take the link to the comic off the opening list and advise to check out your post firat.
- leaving everything as is, which I understand you are not happy with and I’m certainly not insisting you should, but it could be possible as you made the recommendation in good faith.

Anyone else have any further comments?

Personally I wouldn't delete it from the list, but maybe remove the link from page 1 and add a "controversial author - see [link to post]" side note or something like that. But I'd like to see what everyone else thinks. EDIT: That is, don't take the *entry* out of the list, but make it non-clickable.

Also, this is really awkward and I feel like I'm stepping on Lenny's rec time.

I agree with Linebyline's suggestion of adding a warning / note to the comic in the list and potentially making the link unclickable - that way we're not trying to pretend that we never talked about it, but people will be informed before they make the choice to read it.

I've removed MAiz from the comic of the month news feature since it's August anyway.

Yeah, seems like a good approach. Linebyline would you like to add some comment and the link to the article in your original recommendation post? You can modify your own posts. Or I can do it for you if you prefer.

As for Lenny, it seems something has come up. I hope it’s a lot of positive things!

I promised to be the backup so unless something turns up today I will make a recommendation and Lenny can go later.

Done! Looking forward to your rec. And best of luck to Lenny with whatever's going on there!

So, for August I present something short(ish) and sweet:

War in the Shade by unnamed artist, possibly someone named toastyhat

https://warintheshade.wordpress.com/

The site seems to be about to disintegrate, so it’s high time for me to recommend it and for you to read it before it’s gone! The links in Archive don’t work, but the homepage has a message from artist page, and the “previouS” and ”first” buttons work. So press first and read!

As described in the About section:
War in the Shade is a fantasy drama webcomic about people having emotions in the desert. It’s also about Ada Feldon, who accepts a marriage proposal from a man she barely knows.  But it seems that maybe his business is shadier than either she or her new bodyguard had guessed…  Meanwhile, police Constable Chazei Di’s big gay crush on her sergeant gets her wrapped up in an investigation beyond her paygrade. Freehanded in pen on 7″x9″ paper. 5-page updates every other Monday.

WARNINGS: WitS is, generally-speaking, a PG-13 comic, but has themes of emotional manipulation/abuse that sometimes becomes physical, particularly at the end of Chapter 6.

What’s so wonderful about it then? It has people having feelings, as promised. It’s touching and believable, and features growth arcs for several of the characters. And importantly, not everyone is heterosexual!

I wasn’t a fan of the penned BW art when I started, hut it quickly grew on me and it’s actually rather beautiful. Not all people are pretty, which again is believable :)

WitS is finished. I wanted to say it’s under 300 pages, but counting in the archive (which opens, just doesn’t work) it’s actually a bit over 500. Maybe the pages are shorter because it never felt like it’s that long. Be that as it may, it’s well worth the time spent reading.

After finishing the story the author las left comments about a planned write-up on some things related to the story and the world, but as far as I can tell, this never happened. But worry not, the story reaches its proper conclusion so the essay would simply have been a bonus.

Jitter, I've only just started War in the Shade but I love the hand-drawn artwork and the plot has already hooked me in - it starts on a really compelling note. Looking forwards to reading more, and it's great that you've shown us a lesser-known comic as well - hopefully the site won't completely collapse, I'd be sad to lose it

Well I finally finished this.  I liked the story.  The people were definitely relatable.

Initially it took a while for me to realize that Ada was very speckled.

The fan art in chapter breaks is great also.

Spoiler: show

I love happy endings!! Everyone found their love.

Dmeck,

Spoiler: show
I particularly loved how it was accepted that Khimera is ace and doesn’t want sexual love, AND that this doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t want to have people close to him.

Yeah,

Spoiler: show
people often seem to have trouble getting their heads around the concept that is now called ace, and in my youth was more usually called platonic love. I have myself always inclined to the physical as well as the emotional and spiritual aspects of love, but have known and liked folk who only did platonic love. It takes all kinds.

Spoiler tags added by Jitter as this references something later in the comic
