Ah yes, secrets kept from the staff and a riot. Seems like the endeavour was a shit-show all round. And it seems society collapsed. Wonderful. Though not unexpected. No proper apocalypse without the end of society, after all.

"So to sum up: There´s maybe possibly a second exit which is most likely where that whatever-mission-it-was came in, and here´s no food..."

Hmm...

"I'm more worried about the fact they got ambushed soon after entering. If someone is close by, keeping an eye on this place - which is by far the worse case scenario - we should figure out a way to leave as quiet and unnoticed as possible. As for collapsed society... well, I don't plan to just walk away from you guys. So we can worry about bad stuff when we encounter them" he says.

"...And we might get ambushed when we do get out of here."

What should one even comment on this?

"Ok, 'security status' is next up."

She clicks on it, mechanically.

Nine

Nine leans closer to the terminal. "Now this is tricky. The entrance is guarded by the Protectron, that is active. Will it consider us targets? Better not find the answer. These bots are tough. Unless we find much better weapons on our way I wouldn't engage. And even then..." Nine looks at the map again. "Also, we were lucky that the Sentry was inactive when we got out, because these bastards are much tougher. If it turned on us no one would have left that room."

He looks at the others. "However... Anyone saw a big, badass looking robot on the room where we woke up? I didn't, and we took our time there... Maybe some hidden door on the wall... Anyway, that one is not our problem, the one at the entrance is, unless we find an alternate route to the surface."

"Yet that doesn't help us cross the generator room." Nine says, as he scratches his beard and points at final part of the log. "I wonder if turning off the security alert could turn off the entrance bot... On the other hand, the alert has been running for the last sixty years, and there's a small risk that someone, somehow, could notice if it stops. But I'd try anyway, perhaps later."

Moving away from the terminal, Nine continues. "It'a a long shot, but you know what would be great? If we find that sentry bot and manage to program it to defend us. Anyone here able to do that?"

Robin

Robin shook her head.

"I don't understand why they didn't disable it or the general alert though. They could have done it, they had access to this terminal. What if it is what's keeping hostile attention away from this place?" Faust was right, there could be someone on the surface. A change in the security could tip them off and clear the way for them.

Robin

Robin bids her time, holding the shoulder bag quietly. The moment Jay walks past her she tries to pass the bag strap over his head.

Jay gets got. He doesn't even notice for a few seconds - and when he does he accepts his fate quietly. Although he doesn't quite remember most of his first aid training...

Robin

"I knooow we can't stay here," she retorts with some annoyance. What do they think she is, an eight year old? She crosses her arms. "Mom worked for West Tek. It's a defense contractor Vault-Tec. I've bounced around the country for a while with her as she worked on this or that project, and if there's something I learned from it is that this kind of corporation is deeply tangled with the government and that they're very zealous about their stuff. You can't just crash in and take what you want.

"I can't imagine them gone to the point people had to personally come down here to find out what happened without everything else crumbling. The guy in the recording sounded more like—," she searches for a word and shrugs, "—an archeologist digging up old records than a rescue effort by an organization as we knew. What if they came here to scavenge at first? What does this say about the situation up here? And they got ambushed. It's great they speak English, means we weren't conquered, but I-I think society collapsed."

"I mean, people are nosy. I bet the equipment down here is worth a lot, and they could have easily just wanted to poke around and see what they could harvest from it." Jay shrugs. "I mean, sure, society could have collapsed, but people were doing plenty of ill advised experiments even when society was doing fine."

Nine

Nine leans closer to the terminal. "Now this is tricky. The entrance is guarded by the Protectron, that is active. Will it consider us targets? Better not find the answer. These bots are tough. Jay blinks, shifting his weight from one leg to another as he moves up to peer at the terminal. "Not sure about reprogramming anything, but I think I recognize that sentry bot. TE-63...it's one of the ones with an electrical defense system. They call them Tesla Shields. Pretty cool stuff. They recharge their own capacitors as they ground electrical energy."

He steps back. "If it's already broken, we shouldn't shoot it or anything. The parts should at least be helpful. Someone spent some real cash on defending this place... or keeping us inside."

"Whatever we do, there must be a way to get past it. The mission before us got past it. And was able to store things in the entrance without it attacking... Unless the robot was what attacked them in the end. That would mean the alarm was what activated it in the first place."

GENERATOR ONE: Offline, automatic shutdown engaged

GENERATOR TWO: ERROR: Damage detected to containment coils. Automatic shutdown failed. Do not enter generator room.

AUXILIARY POWER: Online, charged to 100%

User Note: If one of these ancient clunkers blows, aux should handle running the vault's operations for a month or two. This code doesn't mesh well with whatever spaghetti they were using for this vault, the generators clearly weren't designed to ever be turned off...or damaged. Why they put something that throws around lightning bolts if you clip a conduit in a room without safeguards, I will never understand, but my guess is the answer is 'Vault-Tec were jackasses', like everything else. You can shut the generators off from here, but unless a maintenance crew goes in and takes them apart afterwards they aren't coming back up.

-Dr Ryan

User Note: Okay, because apparently people are rock stupid, I had to come up with a plan for if one of the generators is damaged and starts spitting lightning. Best bet, find something that attracts electricity and toss it in the middle of the room and hope it attracts enough of the lightning bolts that you can edge around the walkway. That, or have a suit of power armor on hand that won't care.

-Dr Ryan

"If what they were shooting at in the recording was the Sentry bot, they might not have had the time to do so."

Robin blinks, suddenly feeling very stupid. Charlie is right. Nothing in the recording revealed the nature of what had killed them, and in doctor's place Robin would likely let out the same question when attacked. She rubs the back of her neck and reads the generator entry.

Two months at best if it comes to the auxiliary power. The prospect doesn't appeal to Robin, but she doesn't feel the need to voice it out. It's an open-and-shut case: She's ready to try anything and everything else first whether the others are or not. "Do you think we'll ever figure where this Dr. Ryan came from?" she asks absentmindedly instead. "I kinda like him. Doesn't sound like an asshole."

Nine

Nine listens to Robin's final question and gives a wry smile. "Indeed, but even if he wasn't killed then... He was in charge, probably over 30, and 60 years passed, so our chances to ever meeting him..." He doesn't have to complete the sentence.

"So, as we don't want to compromise the pods where your families are, we just cannot turn off the remaining generator. We will have to find a way to pass that room." Nine raises and walks to the door. "I think we're done here. If some of you want to go back to the first room and try to find the sentry bot it may worth trying. I already took a good look at the place, but someone may be luckier. Anyway I think it's safe. We came that way, and there where no other doors, except the one that's locked."

Nine checks his gun again. "The rest of us should move ahead and check the canteen. But before that I want to take a look at those body bags." He looks at Faust. "You checked one of them, right? And it was just bones. But there may be something more on the others."

"I also want to take another look at the generator room. I think there are windows on the other side of the hallway, closer to the canteen. Maybe they give us a better angle to find if I was just imagining the thing between the generators." Nine opens the door and glances to both sides of the corridor. "Looks clear. I'll go check the body bags and wait for you. We have been there, so I think it's safe. As you move, try to look through the windows. Someone can see more than I did."

That said Nine steps into the corridor and begins to inspect the body bags.

The body bags are boring, the only thing in them is bones.
What's more interesting is what's further down the corridor, around the corner.
Namely, bodies outside of body bags...and something that looks like a metallic skeleton.
The bodies are clad in hazmat suits, and the holes - some melted around the edges like they were hit with lasers - tell Nine they died violently.

Keep it in the bag, I think we'll want to give it a listen again." She was glad Jay was hanging safely behind in the line, for she'd like to take a closer look at him when they had the chance. The man looked in a bit of shock and she couldn't to tell whether it was from the situation or a lingering side-effect from the cryosleep.

"Don't touch the remains with your bare hands," she calls after Nine, nodding at Arthur she's ready to move and claiming the security baton for herself on the way out. She makes it to Nine's side in time to see what had caught his attention. Is that a robot?! She falls into a bit of a prowling stance again, glances at the others, then walks down the corridor on light feet, half expecting some unwelcome automated security measure to spring to life.

Nine

Nine waits for Robin and Arthur to pass by him before moving. With his gun ready he crosses slowly to the left wall while keeping his attention over the end of the hallway, particularly on what may be a threat, the robot-like thing.

He approaches one window to the generator room. Violent flashes randomly fill the space beyond the glass. Robin is still cautiously advancing, with Arthur a few steps behind. Nine feels that he has a few seconds. He lets one intense bolt dissipates and peeks through the opening.

Before another bolt makes its best attempt to blind him, Nine makes out the distinctive silhouette of a sentry bot, sat between the two generators.

The metal skeleton thing is clutching an unfamiliar-looking, but clearly broken, weapon. The two bodies in hazmat suits are unarmed, though one has an odd-looking tablet computer (with a hole melted through it) clutched in one hand.

Then both the bodies start twitching.

"Stay back" Faust says, protectively pushing Charlie and Jay behind him. A kid, a civilian. Behind him.
Bodies shouldn't be moving.
Bodies moving is bad. Very bad.
Figuring out what it means and how it happened can wait until later, there were potentially hostile... stuff... ahead.

He begins to regret he didn't take one of the two guns. He can see Grey knows his way around weapons, but the way he's holding that gun is still... undeniably awkward.

Robin shouldn't have been sent to the front.
