Title: YoinkTober 2023 - Tenth Anniversary Edition
Post by: wavewright62 on September 21, 2023, 09:20:21 PM
Welcome to this year's edition of YoinkTober, where we on the Forum follow a series of prompts daily through October!  In general this is modelled on the InkTober challenge, where artists were challenged to produce one piece of inked art per day, even if just a small one.  We have expanded that to include written works (or other media like animatics or soundboards, go nuts) as well as drawings, to celebrate the crucial role words have in our fandom.

This year's prompts follow the theme of TEN, based on 1 November being the anniversary of Page 1 of Stand Still Stay Silent.  Most of the daily prompts are there to fulfill with a creative endeavour, focussed on SSSS - its worldbuilding, its characters, the artistry of its pages, its monsters.  Unlike previous years, some of the prompts are specifically just an excuse to make lists or commentary.  We want everyone to have a go on at least one prompt this year!

Without further ado:
1.   10 things I love about SSSS
2.   10 Little Fingers and 10...uh oh
3.   10-Step Programme
4.   These 10 Are All That's Left
5.   10 Visions of the Icelandic Mages
6.   10 Years of Progress
7.   Sigrun (that's it, that's the whole prompt - it's her birthday)
8.   10-Year-Old Child(ren)
9.   10 functionalities of the Cat-Tank
10.  Year 10
11.  Number 10 Downing St
12.  10 Years Together
13.  One little, 2 little, 10 little notoros
14.  My Favourite 10 Fanworks
15.  SSSS/Known World Decathlon
16.  10 Useful and 100% Safe Spells and/or Runes
17.  Powers of 10 (Orders of Magnitude)
18.  10 Jobs Held By Mikkel Madsen
19.  10 Haiku
20.  It's Been 10 Years Since I Lost You
21.  Top 10 SSSS Characters
22.  10 Cats

I´ve refilled my markers, I´ve bought paper, I´ve printed out the prompts - I´m ready! :haw:

Thanks Wave!!!
Just to clarify, even though this year´s list builds up to SSSS´s 1. page anniversary, making things unrelated to SSSS for some prompts is still fair game right? :)

We-e-ellll most of these are deliberately SSSS-specific, with the intention that there should be a focus on that world and what it has meant to us all.

That said, you're the creator, and we love your content, so...

Sure, I won´t stray from the ones that are specified of course. :sigrun:
But since I mostly stick to drawing in this challenge I do like having a variety of inspirations and artstyles to draw from for the ones that are a little more open. :))

But I have to admit, you´ll have to start without me. :( I´ll be out of the country and without Wifi for the first 3 days of October... So I won´t be able to post and comment until I´m back. But from then on I´m here to stay. :)

Day One, here we go!

Ten Things I Love(d) about SSSS!

1. Finnish mythology - I loved learning about Tapio, Mielikki, lehtos, Vellamo, Kuutar, kade, the tripartite concept of the Finnish soul, et al
2. Atmospheric scenery - gnarly trees, mist-covered fields, water lapping on abandoned docks, the star-filled dream realm - the art was outstanding
3. Trolls!  So many different ways a human could mutate through the bad-luck lottery of the Rash (yes, I'm ignoring the weirdness of cluster trolls)
4. The complete lack of a antagonist in Adv. I - the Rash was implacable, impartial, and impervious to conspiracy theorists
5. Protagonists that did not conform to the established gender and genre stereotypes: the tall gung-ho captain was the lithe daughter of two generals, the pretty boy was short small but perfectly formed and also soft-hearted, Tuuri was agreeably pear-shaped and stayed that way, the most powerful character had a most unfortunate mullet and reputation as a crybaby, the big-muscled farm boy was not stupid, and the gormless ingenue was the most non-binary character imaginable.
6. Onomatopoeia - from 'pat pat' to 'krunts' to 'scritch scritch' to 'ÄÄÄÄÄ!' to 'ssskkRAA' .... endlessly inventive noises
7.  The whole point of the exercise, the treasure at the heart of the quest, was not gold or jewels or tech, but BOOKS, just about any old books (I'm willing to bet there was a buyer for 'Better Golf in 30 Days')
8. Magic system integrated into the worldbuilding - gosh, we had such fun contrasting the Finnish system v the Icelandic system.
9. The Minnions, the commentariat, the Forumites - this fandom was exemplary because a) it was mostly civiland respectful and b) everybody had at least one piece of knowledge that they brought to the table.  Together we explored the different ways people caught in this situation could survive and even thrive.
10. The memorable cast of characters

Spoiler: a very old  and rather long fanwork celebrating onomatopoeia • show

Ten Things I Love(d) about SSSS! (My turn)

1. The fandom (I'm sorry but you all are really awesome!!)(Wave's comment #9 ++)
2. The story.  This to me was different than most of the end-of -the-world stories
3. Different take on the zombie acopylaspe.
4. People you want to root for
5. Fan fiction.  Let's face it many people may have picked apart Minna's lack of consistency, but it allowed us to make/read the most amazing stories.  (I have my favorites.)
6. Despite the comments about the bears and how the ending of ADV II went.  It *did* end.  (Many comics just languish)
7. Art. Especially ADV 1.
8. The camaraderie between the team mates.  (And Emil-Lalli.  Whether Minna intended or not...)
9.  Especially on ADV I The build-up of action (queue jaws theme here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvCI-gNK_y4) )
10.  Human emotions.  (Example: Onni being so afraid to leave)

And so it begins! Here’s my list:

1) The Community. This means each and every one of you guys. I didn’t get hooked by the community, but it certainly is the most precious aspect for me now, and has been for years.

2) the team, as in the main characters of both Adv I and II. Although mostly I, because the camaraderie and banter was nearly absent in Adv II. But I definitely want to include Onni!

3) the monsters. So many intriguing designs! I shudder to think what kind of dreams Minna has / had at the time. I don’t much like monster horror or any horror l but SSSS hist the sweet spot where the creatures are really horrible but not so horrible that I couldn’t take it.

4) the development of both the cooperation as a team and the friendships between the them during Adv I. Plus the fact that there is no canonical romance plot whatsoever, which is so rare. I mean I love the relationships that spice many other stories, but it’s refreshing to have one without.

5) fascinating post-apocalyptic setting. Just like dmeck already said, a cool take on a zombie apocalypse. I love post-apocalypse (which isn’t very well compatible with my aversion of horror.)

6) character designs - realistic body types, no one is designed to only be hot, gear actually covers most of skin (realistically they should have helmets at least in A I when weight isn’t an issue), as well as the non-stereotypical traits and occupations. In particular the fact that Mikkel is a great big super strong guy, and he’s the healer and cook.

7) minor characters - both visual and actions. In Adv II the minor characters were more gender-stereotypical (more precisely, most background characters with any active role are make) but even then there was a lot of variation between them.

8 ) landscapes - such atmospheric locations shown in big splash pages, but also loads of small details in the background especially in A I.

9) magic - intriguing! I wanted to know so much more!

10) Emil/Lalli (and Reynir/Onni too). Yes, I know I said I love it there’s no canonical romance and I do. But at the same time I love how the fandom has found so many ways for them to be together. I just love my boys!

Ten things is not enough btw!

How Iceland - remember, the clients of the Dagrenning Program are all domestic - reinvented the no-fly list.
(How they found out that the unknown founder of Onnanon can fly, if only in luonto form, remains classified.)

Can I belatedly post a Day 1 item?

In no particular order:

1) the artwork. Which was fantastic.
2) that the people were shaped like people -- no Comic Book Exaggerated Male and Female. And a variety of body types.
3) the mix of people of at least two genders working and living together, with nobody making a special point of it; this was just shown as normal.
4) no apparent need for Everybody To Be Paired Off. Some people are paired to start with; and one couple appears to get paired off during the comic; but others aren't, and it's not shown as necessary.
5) the cats.
6) the presence of other non-human creatures.
7) the mythology; and, in adventure 1, the depiction of Christianity as one valid power among others.
8 ) the mixture of pity for, and dread of, the monsters.
9) the slow reveal of the monsters.
10) what we saw (which wasn't enough) about how the communities of survivors were structured and how they were living.

I'm going to put the fandom as a separate sort of item; because it isn't really a part of the comic itself. After all, we're still here.

Ten little fingers and… uh oh

“Hilja? What is wrong? Why do you look like that?”
”Um, nothing. All is well.”
”You look shaken! What is it?”
“Take it easy! Everything is fine.”
”I felt you tense! Tell me at once! Is there… there’s something wrong with the baby?!”
”No no no! The baby is all right! They… both are.”

“Both? What do you mean both?!”
“There are two babies.”
”Two? I… I’m going to kill that man!”
”But I thought you didn’t know where he is?”
”Never you mind that! I’m going to find him, and I’m going to make him regret his sweet words! ’What’s the worst that could happen’ in-fricking-deed!”

Ten little fingers and 10...uh oh

The scouting party was about ready to call it a day.  The search for Survivors did not yield any success.  They may need to call it and return to the base.  It did not seem likely they would find anyone still alive or uninfected.

Finding the bodies was bad, but finding what some people turned into was a nightmare come true.

They came upon what looked like a restaurant.  "Good!", Mór thought.  If the power was still working there may be meat in the freezers, or at least canned/packaged items.  His stomach gave a low rumble at the thought of something other than field rations.

The rest of the team returned they had two strangers with them.

"HO! State your name and intent.."

"I am Alla and this is Bera, We have been coming south looking for Survivors.  We are so glad to see you!!  Your squad here told us of your mission."

The team cleared the old restaurant of any beasts they all went in and settled in.  Mór had an unsettled feeling about the two survivors and watched and followed closely behind.   He watched as they shed their outer coats, gloves and boots. He waited until they removed their sunglasses..

Two shots rang out and Alla and Bera lay dead..

"WTF!  Why did you shoot them!! "

"Look at their hands..they were changelings.  They were monsters..they would have killed us in our sleep. You can always tell by the eyes, hands and feet.  They were wearing sunglasses like us, so we could not see their eyes. But hands and feet will give them away also.  Usually they will lose or gain digits.  I caught a glimpse of their hands as they were changing.  If you look you can see their feet are deformed also. "Mór stated.

As they looked them over closer their feet were longer than normal with the extra toes poking through.

"NEVER NEVER accept people as is.  You need to check them out.  We were lucky this time.  Don't be so stupid.  You can get us killed. "

"Remember
10 little fingers, 10 little toes
2 little ears and 1 little nose
2 little eyes that shine so bright

Anything else is just not right!"

Uuf dmeck! I kind of saw it coming but… swift and effective!

But what’s this then? Emil is peering at a note, written in appalling hand but nevertheless nearly readable

1 no lazy
2 morning early
3 breakfast good
4 morning run with Sigrun
5 lunch good
6 blankets bed only
7 stand on one foot
8 around village
9 do what cat
10 night run with me

“Lalli! What is this?”
”Ah, you find. Your plan. MY plan. For you”
“?? What plan? What is going on?”
”You cannot run through night. Dangerous. Bad. We think you practice.”
”We?”
”Me. Sigrun.”
“You have been talking with Sigrun about my running?!”
”Sigrun know your running. We talk how you train.”
“How do you even talk with Sigrun?”
”Onni and Mikkel help”
“Onni and Mikkel!? You talk about my running with everyone?”
“No. Not Reynir. Reynir is stupid. Not good running.”
”Lalli, I’m sure you mean well but…”
“Heey! If it isn’t my right hand Viking! And you found our 10 step program already! Aren’t you excited! I am! Morning runs are the most best!”

10-Step Programme

(takes place between Spot 24 & picking up Reynir)

Mikkel asked Tuuri to join him outside the tank, from where he stood on the bank of a nearby stream.

"Can you see Copenhagen from there? Let me see!"  She hurried to the hatch, fussing to put on her mask, but Mikkel stopped her on the stairs.

"Now, walk toward me - slowly!"  Tuuri complied, craning her neck to try to catch an early glimpse of the wonder Mikkel was about to show her, but he was looking down at the ground.  "Stop!," he held up a hand.  "Stop right there."

"What? What?"  Tuuri looked down at her feet. "I- I don't understand? What is it?"

Mikkel calmly brought his hand down and crossed his arms.  "I've counted out 10 steps.  That, is the boundary of how far you are allowed to go from the tank."

Tuuri sputtered into her mask but had no answer.

--------------

A short one, I was going to elaborate on this concept but have no time.

I hope it is a fun trip!!

Thank you! It was! :) ("out of the country" was a bit of an overstatement on my part though, I live relatively close to the Austrian border so this barely counts in my opinion :.D )

We´re off to a great start! I loved reading all the contributions so far! Here´s mine for day 1 and 2 (I forgot to photograph yesterday´s drawing and now it´s night... Oh well, I´ll post it with today´s tomorrow.)

1: ten things I love about SSSS

Can I retroactively also add all the things that have been said here? Ten really is too little for this prompt. :V
Anyways, I tried to style this as some sort of guessing-game? So, feel free to guess if you want to. Some objects represent several points because I didn´t want the image to get too crowded. I put the actual list under the spoiler.

Spoiler: the 10 things I love • show

(in no specific order)

1: the community around it. Yes, one can argue that this isn´t really part of the comic, but it is the reason I stayed this invested in it for this long, and the reason I´m still here, so it has to be mentioned.
2: the poetry. Both inside the comic and what people were writing about it. It really gave me a new appreciation for that medium that school (I´m sorry), didn´t exactly provide me... The poems were always the first thing I looked for in the comments.
3: The mythology I learned about through the comic and the people around here. Also the magic-systems in SSSS are just neat.
4: the trolls. I´m a sucker for a good monster-design, even though I´m really bad at drawing scary things. And the ones in SSSS just strike this perfect balance between chillingly scary and tragic, so they´re never just an obstacle to hack and slash through. They have an actual story!
5: The artstyle and colors. Especially A1 is just so nice to look at. And I feel like I learned a lot artistically while trying to immitate its style in fanart.
6: linguistics and the discussions around it the comic created. Another thing I never thought could be so interesting until finding my way to this corner of the internet.
7: Costume Design. I just... really like the clothes people wear in this comic. They´re practical, they´re nice to look at, they´re so fun to draw...
8: The arc at the end of A1 where Lalli was trapped in Emil´s head. It´s probably my favorite part of the story. I don´t really have an explanation, it´s just neat.
9: The whole athmospere especially in the Silent World the comic creates.
10: The Characters and their interactions and relationships, especially in A1. I didn´t really know how to incorporate that without drawing them all, so this is supposed to be represented by the picture frame with the SSSS-logo. Just pointing this one out because I think it´s not that well executed haha. :.D

btw this was the view I was drawing in front of  :))

Spoiler: show

2: Ten little fingers and 10… uh oh

How fun that most people interpreted this prompt, that I saw as a clear instruction to make something scary, in the completely opposite way.
But I already drew a grossling the day before, so here´s the Cheshire Cat instead.
The paper I used last year was sold out when I went to the store, so I decided why not try something new and use brown paper this time? So I´ll do that while also using up the rests of regular paper I still have lying around. Forgive me that the brown-paper drawings will probably be a lot simpler than the white-paper-drawings, I´m still finding out what works well with this medium. :)

10 little fingers or rather 10 toes,
10 long talons and one little nose
two big eyes that shine so bright
and one big smile with sharp teeth inside

I wasn´t familiar with the poem this prompt was based on so I looked it up before starting. Especially the line "two little eyes that shine so bright" stuck with me, so...

Spoiler: show

... I dumped glow-in-the-dark-paint on ´em baby!

I'm not familiar with the poem, to be honest, and I'm most delighted that I accidentally hit on that reference for many while making the prompt!

I honestly had babies / toddlers in mind while coming up with the prompt (like how everybody seem to look at a new baby & count the fingers & toes? , and like Mirasol figured it could be taken into troll territory.  But hey, it's delight time.

Speaking of delight - glow in the dark eyes! I really enjoy drawings done on different colour papers, even though I seldom do that myself.

(Not getting to any prompts myself for the next few days)

Look at that, this wouldn´t have come to my mind at all. :.D (Completely the other way, actually, I looked at the prompt and thought "huh, this must be a reference to some poem I don´t know!")
I´m by no means claiming my interpretation is the right one by the way, sorry if it came off this way! I mean, evidently I jumped on something that wasn´t meant at all. I just really enjoy it when the same prompt turns into something completely different with every person who does it. That´s why I try not to check this thread until my contribution for the day is finished and I can´t get influenced. (Sometimes I´m too curious though...)

Here´s my next two drawings:

3: 10-Step-Program

I was confident enough into my gardening-skills this year to plant my namesake, Sunflowers! ...into pots! (So they´re safe from slugs, was my thought-process) This... was maybe a mistake... :.D But they all bloomed and they´re beautiful and I love them. <3
Anyways, here´s the ten steps of growing potted Sunflowers, accompanied by drawing:

Spoiler: the ten steps • show

1: plant the seeds into tiny pots. Maybe some more than you need in the end, in case they don´t sprout. Just in case.
2: You now have double the amount of Sunflower seedlings than you have bigger pots, and absolutely not the heart to select some over others. Ergo, get more pots.
3: Repot the seedlings
4: Add fertilizer
5: water every day. Do not forget. they will let you know if you do.
6: Oh no, they fell over! Take your pick of reasons:
    - a light gust of wind hit them
    - they want to be watered and wanted to make sure you get the hint
    - they were just feeling a little dramatic today
7: Put them back upright. Add your preferred selection of items to keep them upright for the foreseeable future.
8: repeat Step 6&7 roughly once a week for the rest of their lifespan
9: watch them bloom and take a million pictures because you´re so proud of them
10: make elaborate plans of how you´re going to plant them right into the garden next time because this was a whole lot of work, slugs be damned!

A friend of mine recently called Sunflowers "real-life Tamagochis". xD He has a point.
Also here they are in real life: :sparkle: :sparkle: :sparkle:

4: These 10 are all that´s left

I´m once again enjoying a nice little morbid videogame with a cute artstyle right now. This time it´s "Cult of the Lamb", which is a mixture of dungeon crawling and farming game where you lead your own cult. If you are a kind leader or an evil one is completely your choice, and in a playthrough you can pick accordingly from a pool of abilities that changes the gameplay almost entirely.

I get incredibly attached to all the little creatures this game throws at me, no matter how stupid they act, so I could never hurt them. Sadly they still die of old age incredibly fast. It took me real-life days to get past having ten followers, because whenever I came back with new ones I´d show up to several corpses in my home base...

Hey I love your 10 steps for growing sunflowers in pots!  I opened it excitedly because I live in an apartment and the thought of growing sunflowers was very exciting.
Alas, I have now scuttled the idea...
But this is still highly appreciated, as is the insight into your game du jour.

- Mommy, can I have some moreplease?
- No, honey, I’m sorry, you can’t
- But I’m hungry.
- Oh baby. i know. We all are. Let’s go to sleep now. We’ll eat tomorrow again.
- But I can’t sleep! I’m too hungry! Why won’t you or daddy just go to the shop like you used to? Bring bread and milk and ice cream and…
- Hush now, you know we can’t.
- I don’t WANT it to be the end of the world! It’s unfair!
- Yes it is, baby. Yes it is.
***
- We have to leave, you know that.
- We can’t! It’s too dangerous!
- It is dangerous but we can’t stay. Have you looked into the bag? Three tomato cans, one coconut milk, pea soup, two cans of tuna and two bags of noodles. We are out of food.
- Don’t forget the crackers!
- All right, one packet of crackers. These ten are all that’s left. We have to go before we are too hungry to walk.
- All right, I’ll go in the morning to look for something.
- No, must all leave. It’s not going to get better. We have to find a more sustainable place. We’ll all go together.
- But in the morning, right?
- In the morning. Definitely not now!

This one was hard to decide on because I had so many ideas for it!

Good one!

-- they'd better cook all the noodles before they leave, raw noodles aren't much good to eat. Maybe they might as well be full tonight and sleep well before heading out -- a better chance of getting through the first day may balance against another day or two that they can keep going longer; if they don't make it through the first day or two, after all, it won't matter how many supplies they would have had left.

Everyone!! Awesome stuff!!

These 10 are all that's left
After many years of exploring the team were very well off financially.  They were all relaxing with some schnapps sitting near a huge roaring fireplace.

"We need to go on an adventure again." Sigrun said

"We are getting old we are not as fast as we once was.." Onni retorted

We'll make our children come and show them how its done..." Sigrun replied unfazed..

Reynir wanting to avoid the pending argument Asked.  "What are the last thing you remember being weird on our trips?"

"hmmm..."

"I know!" Emil said.  "That warehouse where we found all those beans.  We ate beans for months.  It was weird after all those years they were still ok..."

Mikkel thought about it and said, "Finding those old buildings that looks to be shopping areas.  We scavenged many a thing from there."

"Yeah, except that one that was flooded and had that nasty water beast."

"What about that library that look perfect and the minute you touched the books they disintegrated?"

"yeah!  That was so sad.."

"Oh ! I know that jar of pickles on by the road..."

"I think that cat was a spirit or a god of some sort.  He definitely helped us out of a tight spot."

"yeah, he was the one that told us it was time to retire..I think he just wanted us away from his space"

"A talking cat is not normal!"

"What in this world is?"

"I'll make tea.  Emil you said you made cake."

"Oh yeah, I'll get it."

Noonnoommoon it is today so you are right on time! I love your landscape, a lovely place for Sigrun to go boating!

Dmeck, those are some creepy pictures! Especially the road. Where? Why? But please tell me the library is AI generated! All those books! (Although nowadays a lot of old books are problematic waste if you need to get rid of them for whatever reason - bulky and heavy, and surprisingly uninteresting!)

Thorny, I hope the family may even be able to find a car. Not usable here as the roads are blocked, but maybe further out from the city? This is very early days so shouldn’t be impossible. I don’t know whether we’ll ever hear from them again or not.

Hey I love your 10 steps for growing sunflowers in pots!  I opened it excitedly because I live in an apartment and the thought of growing sunflowers was very exciting.
Alas, I have now scuttled the idea...
But this is still highly appreciated, as is the insight into your game du jour.

I didn´t mean to entirely discourage you! ^^' My steps were a little overdramatized for humor´s sake, I admit, I do believe with some tweaks you can grow potted sunflowers just fine. After all, even mine grew and bloomed. Actually, a lot of people I know did the same thing this year - they also ran into the same issues, mind you, but all in all we all ended up having flowers.
So let me add some improvement-steps to growing potted sunflowers, based on what I´d do differently next time:

Spoiler: Not quite 10 more steps. More like 5. • show

1: from the get-go, try to pick a kind of sunflower that doesn´t grow too tall. While I did buy the shortest ones my local grocery-store had, they´d still reach up to 2m if they had the space (my highest got up to 1,70m roughly). At some point the lever-principle just took over...
2: grow them with a stick to keep them upright from the beginning. They really rapidly get a quite thick stem and then they´re stuck in whatever position they have right now, which might be very prone to falling over. I only properly stabilized one, which was the one that fell over the least.
3: try to keep them at a place that is relatively safe from the wind. It tends to catch in the leaves.
4: Even if they do fall over, that doesn´t mean they´re done for. I called them dramatic for a reason. They look inches from death really fast, but just add water and wait five minutes, they´ll be good as new. Falling over a few times won´t kill them.
5: Only thing I can´t think of a good solution for is how much water they need... But that is just something inherent to Sunflowers I think... A big overpot or bowl is probably a good idea.

But yeah, as thorny said, there´s plenty of flowers that grow better in pots. :) I´m sure you´ll find a good fit!

***

Jitter, you chose the idea well, I quite like this story!

(Am I overthinking this?)

No, I agree. Reminds me of those tales of people dying of thirst in the desert despite still having a water-supply because they wanted to save it. Sure, lack of food won´t kill you as fast, but malnutrition does worsen your reflexes and senses which would be fatal when you´re out there with trolls.

Dmeck, those are some nifty places to have post-apocalyptic adventures in! Are any of them real?

noonnoommoon, happy Birthday Sigrun! Proudly standing on her boat there!

***

My contribution for Sigrun´s birthday will be posted with my next batch, my habit of drawing late in the evening doesn´t work well with things I have to take photos of. So I´ll just wish her a happy birthday for now. :sigrun: :sigrun: :sigrun:

5: 10 Visions of Icelandic Mages

A1 in visions for Reynir, taking inspiration from the aesthetic of the briefly introduced but ultimately scrapped omen... I can´t find the page right now.
I kinda regret adding the green though.

6: 10 years of progress

I couldn´t come up with a good story for this one, so instead I dug up something I drew 10 years ago to do a "draw this again"-challenge (10 years of drawing-progress!). Coincidentally, 10 years ago I was also 10 years old, so it fits the theme even better. :.D
This is a jackalope I had to invent for an artproject (which is why I had it dated). I then proceeded to draw it on every scrap paper for a while. It´s a mixture of... squirrel, owl and frog? Probably some more, but these were the ones I could identify from looking at it/remembered putting in there. In the new iteration I tried to make it look a little more like a coherent animal rather than just some body-parts stuck together. The body ended up looking less like feathers (as I intended) and more like fur, so now it looks more like just a winged squirrel with frog-feet? Hm...

“Good morning, class! Today we will start learning Icelandic, the most important language after our own Norwegian!  We’ll get started with something easy, because much of Icelandic is similar to Norwegian. So, who can tell what I say now?” *teacher proceeds to count 1-10 n Icelandic*

”Yes, that’s right, this was the numbers. Most of them are very similar.”

“Yes, I got it now! You just take the normal word and add -ir to the end! Easy peasy!”

“Well, Sigrun dear, it’s a bit like that but there’s something more to it too. Now, please copy the names of numbers in your notebooks”

*writes on board*

1. Einn - en / ett

2. Tveir - to

3. Þrír - tre

4. Fjórir - fire

5. Fimm - fem

6. Sex - seks

7. Sjö - sju

8. Átta - åtte

9. Níu - ni

10. Tíu - ti

“Ein, tveir, what! Teacher, you have made a mistake! I know all the letters and that is not a letter you used in three!”

“Yes it is! It’s (thorn), like in Thor! Don’t you know anything?”

“Well, children,  this is one of the trickier things about Icelandic. There are some letters that we don’t use. These are… what is is Sigrun?”

”I don’t need to learn this! I will go out to practice.”

”You will do nothing of the sort. And everyone needs some Icelandic. When you are grown up, maybe you are a general like your parents, and need to liaise with the Icelanders about military matters?”

”I will be a field leader and most best (teacher sighs audibly) troll hunter! I will never take a boring desk job like mum and dad! And always use indoor voice only!”

”Nevertheless, this is what we are studying now. Sit back at your desk, and do indeed use the indoor voice for now.
So, I was saying, there are the Þ and Ð, which…”

”Auuughh! I’ll never learn this!”

Mirasol, your winged squirrel is lovely! We have a ton of acorns this year, and the squirrels are very active. I bet they’d like to have wings as they often need to jump very fast when our girls (dogs) come out. Reynir with his doggo is sweet as always.

The summer was weird. The weather was reasonably good, but there was a strangeness in the air. A lot of people seemed to be restless. Even more restless, that is, than is common during the summer, when the light nights seem to make many Icelanders slightly overexcited. It was as if a weird epidemic of bad dreams was haunting the nation.

In June there were several reports of blood in the sea. The local police officers or sometimes the Coast Guard were alerted in Vopnafjörður, Kalfafellsstadur, Ísafjörður and several times near Reykjavik, to attend what was supposedly several whales in distress near the shore bleeding into the sea. None of the events offered any explanation why different people had seen and sometimes smelled the sea to have been covered in blood, on different shores all around the country.

In July, great flocks of strange birds were sighted. Iceland is rich in marine birdlife, but these seemed to be dark terrestrial birds. Farmers were worried that the invasion would result in their crops getting eaten, because such birds don’t have much natural food on the island nation. But miraculously no damages were caused. The birds were seen sweeping on the sky, but no one seemed to know what they ate or where they roosted.

August saw an influx of false alarms of volcanic activity. A hiker saw Hekla belching smoke and ash, but when he reached the nearest point of cell reception, nothing was happening. A family ice climbing on Vatnajökull got a fright of their lives when the daughter swore, she saw lava fountaining to the sky from Bárðarbunga. The Lakagígar were seen spewing vapor and lava, and yet nothing out of the ordinary shaking registered on the seismometers.

When autumn came and the Allting resumed session, it was established that it wasn’t over. Jóhanna had recurring nightmares, filled with blood and gunfire. This could have been a delayed reaction to the crisis of 2009 and to what could have happened then, if the prime minister were the only one with nightmares. But no. Oddný dreamt of a threatening, breathing darkness. Steingrímur kept seeing blighted fields almost every night. Unnur’s restless nights were filled with storm clouds billowing from the sea in all directions, threatening to engulf Iceland completely.

The national decision makers were worried. Ólafur laughed at them at first, but as the same dreams kept repeating, it was becoming obvious that everything wasn’t right. Nobody knew why some people were riddled with bad dreams while others weren’t. If it were in the air, or water, then certainly it should affect everyone? It was also oddly specific, with each other having their own nightmare. Until it wasn’t. Early October the pattern changed. Now Steingrímur would see the gunfire, and Oddný the storm. And the next night it was different again.

Mid-October saw the brightest and weirdest northern lights ever. People of both the political leadership and the common townspeople saw a neverending dance of forms over the night sky. It was very beautiful. Except… didn’t that look a bit like a… tentacle? As if something humongous with lots of teeth? Did you see how it looks like as if a city was crumbling on the sky just now?

On the first of November, the Allting was in session and both the president, and the ministers were present. Suddenly several people were overcome with the strangest phenomenon. While others didn’t see or hear anything, Jóhanna, Oddný, Unnur and Steingrímur were all frozen in place for a while. When they were again back to their senses, they all claimed that two huge ravens, black as midnight and big as to fill the room (and more, “actually it was a bit like they both were inside here and weren’t”) had spoken to them, uttering this message:

“Are you daft? You have been warned since the summer. Do something, NOW!”

“Um, so, are you saying you are getting some sort of visions like Icelandic mages?” Ólafur was uncomfortable, but this had been going on for too long to ignore.

“Yes. Yes we are. We are closing the border as of midnight tonight.”

“But! Surely you can’t…”

“All in favor raise their hand” Einar the speaker of Allting asked. By vote of 33 against 30, it was decided that the border be closed for a while. Just in case there was something in the message of those two strange ravens.

I took a little liberty with the people. Einar was the speakter in late 2013 and Ölafur was president, but Jöhanna's term as prime minister actually ended earlier in 2013 (I don't know the exact date). But more of the Seiðr were women, so I shuffled the timeline a bit. And of course I don't know which ones of the Icelandic members of parliament and other top politicians are Seiðr in this reality, so I apologize for any mistakes made in the preceding description.

”So, let’s see we have everything we should be taking. What little food we have left, water bottles, all the candles and matches…”
“Flashlights, batteries…”
“Oh, go get all the batteries out of remotes, clocks, fire alarms… if there’s any power left, we are taking it.”
”Good thinking! And let’s take the big container too.”
”It’s far too heavy to carry!”
”No it isn’t when empty. Joona can carry it. We may need a container later.”
”Well, all right, I guess we can ditch it later if it’s too unwieldy. What else?”
”sleeping bags… check, puukko… check,  axe… check, warmest jackets, boots, hats… check.”
”We should also take the knives.”
“What was it Joona dear? Knives?”
”Yes. All of the good kitchen knives.”
“How come?”
”We don’t have any guns, right? Or do we?”
“No guns, son. You know that.”
”Yeah, well, it’s a zombie apocalypse out there. If I can’t have a gun, I want a knife. Even Elli should have one! And let’s take the bat. Can we put some nails into it?”
”Nails? I don’t think we have such long nails at hand. But I suppose we could take the bat. It’s not like it’s that heavy.”
”What are you talking about? We can’t fight the… the. Things.”
”Mommy, we may not have a choice. But we want to flee, not fight m right?”
”Yes, of course. We only want to flee.”
“Then let’s also take a bit of hosepipe.”
”Hosepipe??”
“Yes. It’s needed get gas from one car to another. You know, put the hosepipe in the fuel tank, suck to start the flow and the gas will flow out of the tank. We should take a bucket too.”
“Joona, you are a 10-year old child. Why do you know such things?”
“Well, um… remember when you wouldn’t buy me the game The Last of Us?… Samu’a brother has… had it. I have learned some useful things!”
”Well, I… ah… good, I guess. Grab the hosepipe, dear. And the bat.”

(at my location, it's 10 AM on the 10th. So here's my Year 10:)

We're still alive.

That thought's in my head every morning, now, when I wake up; though I'm a little less surprised by it than I was in the first few years. I'm getting steadily more surprised that I myself am still alive, though, so that rather balances it out.

It's my birthday; today I've made it to 80. And today we've made it ten years from the day they closed the borders. That particular combination of anniversaries has been very disconcerting; on the one hand, a double day of celebration, for my life and our community's? but on the other -- a celebration of the day the world died? How can we celebrate on that day!

One of our survivors was -- is -- a rabbi. She's been writing us a ceremony -- it changes a little every year, at least so far -- influenced by the Jewish combination, in a few days at about this time of year, of a celebration of life and the New Year and of regret and atonement. It seemed to fit. It seemed essential for her to do something. She's the only Jewish survivor that we know of. She was forty-three in year zero, and tried, desperately, to get pregnant. That hasn't happened, and seems even more unlikely to, now. But she has three converts -- despite the fact that something very odd seems to be happening involving the Nordic gods. (If they're real after all, then maybe so is the Jehovah who said 'No other gods before Me?') And one of those converts is in the seventh month of pregnancy. Will future generations think of Jews as stereotypically blonde and tall?

Yes, not only are we still alive: we're having children. Three born in the first year, two from pregnancies already established in the Old World, and the third from desperation sex during the Change. Then none for five years -- could we even feed the mouths we had? Then a child late in year six, and two in year seven, and four born so far this year with another two pregnancies well along. Almost enough to replace each year's deaths, by now. Maybe we'll hold, at not quite 300, and drop no further. Maybe we'll gain a bit of cropland, and start going up again.

Maybe we're really still alive, and not just dying slowly.

Gosh, thorny, that was beautiful and well thought-out!
I admit I laughed at the idea of future generations thinking of Jews as stereotypically tall and blonde.

Spoiler: self promo for a story I wrote once on the topic • show

I had once considered what happened to the Jews (https://archiveofourown.org/works/13722132), in a story that also took in Onni's grief, back when we didn't know what was going to happen to Tuuri. That story, however, would have been much different from the POV of Y10, rather than Y92, so I really like where you've gone.

Some truly chilling stories recently! I enjoyed them all a lot, but I´m too tired to write individual comments right now... ^^'

I´m still here, just having a crazy busy week, so you get three pictures today:

7: Sigrun

Happy Birthday once again, Sigrun!
And another first, I tried out acrylic markers here. I drew on the wrong side of the paper accidentally (one is sealed and one is not), so it fell apart a little bit, but I don´t think it´s too noticeable... Aside from that, these markers are really fun. You can freely layer them and they stay opaque (mostly). But they don´t mix at all, they dry way too fast. Very different from the alcohol-markers I usually draw with here.

8: 10-yearold Child

I must admit, I had no clue what to draw for this. So I asked my brother once more, and he once again answered "Pokémon". Incredibly fitting though in this case, after all, Ash Ketchum is pretty famous for managing to stay ten years old for seasons over seasons of Anime. :.D
This is a redraw of a frame from the Anime. I repeated my Acrylic Markers-experiment, this time on the right side of the paper and additionally with a slightly thicker than usual fine liner to do the outlines.

9: 10 functionalities of the Cattank

This was supposed to be entirely different and way more complicated and well-thoughtout, but then I had a headache yesterday and couldn´t be bothered... :-\
Oh well, so you get Tuuri ranting to Emil about all the cool things the Cattank can do instead. I mean, she would know what they are much better than me anyways. :.D

Dmeck, those are some nifty places to have post-apocalyptic adventures in! Are any of them real?

Actually all but the Library are real.  (The library is AI.  I just really liked the picture.  The dead animal may be AI also)

1. The first picture is from an on line reseller that sells beans.  (They are known for selling heirloom varieties)
https://www.baersbest.com/store/beans/

2. Independence Center mall in Independence, Missouri.  Apparently this part was supposed to be a play area.  The mall is barely active, but this part is closed.

3.  The abandoned new world mall in Bangkok Thailand.  It is teeming with fish. (https://www.daxward.com/New-World-Mall-Bangkok/)

4. It is supposedly a real place in the US south, but from the artist;s comments I am not too sure https://www.instagram.com/p/CpiF_I5pC6v/

5. Roadside pickles Yes this is real.  The Missouri highway department keeps removing them and they magically come back.  https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/why-pickles-highway-missouri

6.  This was an old commercial rose greenhouse (I am thinking PA) https://www.flickr.com/photos/trepan8/albums/72157622093418895/page1/

7. “Cosmic Greenhouse”, somewhere in Germany, exact location not given. https://www.messynessychic.com/2015/01/15/a-compendium-of-abandoned-greenhouses/

8.  This is the saddest of them all.  This is the road heading into Centralia PA.  A fire was set to burn trash.  It was not put out fully, and an old coal seam caught fire.  The town was eventually raised and the people were forced to leave (Not all apparently) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania https://www.centraliapa.org/

9. A cat relaxes against one of the ruins of the 2,000-year-old archaeological site of Ephesus, an ancient Roman port city in modern-day Turkey.

I will comment on the rest in a bit.  Had company over the weekend

Number 10 Downing St:

Belongs to us, finally.

All of those years, the humans thought it was theirs. They'd only allow one of us at a time. That one was well treated, of course -- humans always want to impress other humans; and many humans, quite properly, are impressed if humans know how to take proper care of a cat.

Two sisters moved in right after the Change. They let the resident neutered tom stay and live out his life; he was doing no harm, and washed their ears quite nicely; and when the full toms came to visit, they chose one to stay who wouldn't bother him too much. Then of course there were kittens; but we found we could choose when to have them, and how many. So there are indeed many of us; but not too many, and no one exhausts herself bearing more than she can easily feed.

So it's ours, now. Cats in all the rooms, going in and out all the broken windows. So many cats that the new monsters stay away, seeking easier prey; and because they stay away, mice and squirrels and rabbits come to hide from them, and all of us eat well.

We're a bit more generous than the humans were. We allow one entire human family; guiding replacements in when needed, held safe within a crowd of cats on a sunny day. We like to have our ears properly scratched, after all. They keep a garden, and set snares for game (giving us our share, of course), and there are plenty of books in the building for them to stare at (and for us to sit on.)

But the humans don't pretend they're in charge, any longer. About time they learned that lesson.

Thorny, I love it! And the human family must truly think the felines are blessed!

They might have mixed feelings. On the one hand, they're alive, comfortable, and protected; suitable new humans get brought in occasionally; and they get to pat cats, and they and the cats must be genuinely fond of each other. On the other hand -- the humans might feel trapped. They're in the middle of London, and almost certainly don't dare leave the premises without the assistance of a crowd of cats; which they probably won't get, because the cats want them to stay home and scratch ears.

(And thanks for the compliments, all!)

suitable new humans get brought in occasionally
[wonders whether the catpedition, after going all the way to the countryside, would return pushing a repurposed pet carrier or somesuch, or establish proof that while humans herding cats may be nigh impossible, reversing the roles works out quite nicely?]
Title: Re: YoinkTober 2023 - Tenth Anniversary Edition
Post by: thorny on October 12, 2023, 10:41:58 AM
I envisioned them just surrounding the person. First there's a cute cat in front of you, wants to be patted. Then that cat moves off a little, rolls to attract patting, gets the person to follow. Then when the human thinks that's far enough and starts to turn back, they find they're surrounded -- and the cats in front are friendly, but the ones in back threaten if the human tries to go back.

A human who tries really hard to break out of the cat ring would probably just not be considered a good candidate. Find somebody who's at least somewhat willing to go; even though they probably wouldn't understand they were going permanently -- they might think that the cats were just trying to take them to someone (feline or human) who needed help. The cats are going to want humans who are willing to cooperate with cats.

Despite this three-in-a-row, I'm not going to be able to do one every day (though I do have at least one more, for a day later in the month.) But here's today's. (Italics are meant to indicate things thought but not said.)

10 years together

"I didn't like you when I first met you."

"Well I didn't like you when I first met you!"

"You were a crybaby fool who thought the whole world ought to bend around you . . . But you were trying your best to take care of your cat." (And your family had a farm you could go to -- )

"I thought you were a low-class uneducated fool or you wouldn't have had that sort of job. And you were mocking me, and trying to tell me what to do! -- but Magnus liked you." (And you knew how we could get to the farm, in all of that chaos -- )

"Magnus loved you. And you were right, you were terrible at farming. But you kept trying, at least. And then it turned out you could cook." (And we both needed comfort, and so we held each other.)

"I never thought of cooking as important before. Let alone respected. I just wanted something fit to eat. But once I started putting those meals on the table, everybody started treating me differently." (And we both needed comfort, and so we held each other.)

"And it turned out that not only do I love cats, but I love sheep; and I'm very good with them.

We both thought we'd hate this life. And we both thought we'd hate each other. And we were both wrong, about both of those things. -- Want to keep on doing this together?"

"Get married, for our tenth anniversary? Yes, let's!"

Dmeck, thanks for the links! You really found some fascinating places and things there!

thorny, yes it did. And I could also tell from the first sentence who this was about. A lovely little story. :))

I was busy again, so another triple:

10: Year 10

I did a little visit back to the Saimaa floating Town (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1139.msg174901#msg174901) and what it might look like ten years in the making.

11: Number 10 Downing Street

I see I´m not the only one whose mind went straight to the feline inhabitant of Downing Street. :))

12: ten years together

Spoiler: spoilers for the Adventure Time finale... though it´s been years. Vague spoilers for Fionna and Cake. • show

I really took a long time figuring out what to draw for this one... I´m not enough of a romantic at heart to be able to imagine a fictional couple ten years down the line without additional information, especially as most of them tend to only get together in their respective work. So I decided to partly ditch the romantic aspect.
The Fionna and Cake-show takes place 12 years in the future of Adventure Time´s finale, so it qualifies.
Ten years has Simon Petrikov been sane and together with his loved ones, but also ten years apart from the one he loves most, which makes fleeing back to the madness of the crown and the forgetting that comes with it suddenly very compelling.

10 Favourite Fanworks - listed, but not ranked, as they hit different parts of what I love.

1. Kasvatus (https://archiveofourown.org/series/952455) - imo the best imagining of the post-canon story arc, a sprawling multi-story tale.  In turn fluffy, sexy, wry, and truly frightening, but always with characterisations that ring true. Any work by onnenlintu is well worth it, but this magnum opus is possibly his best work.

2. Defense Mechanism (https://archiveofourown.org/works/11411430/chapters/25562067) - Laufey's inspired concept set in Iceland features a well-imagined cast of characters drawn within Iceland's underclass formed by disturbing racial and ethnic bias.

3. I can't read Russian, but I highly appreciate the artworks contributed by the Russian fandom.  Like this one: I adore Стикеры для телеграмм: Отдам в хорошие руки (https://archiveofourown.org/works/25734334), Helga Mareritt's sweet and funny drawings of notoros.

4. Always droll, of Purple Wyrm's comedic stories, A Good Walk Spoiled (https://archiveofourown.org/works/17415380) is highly recommended.

5. It wouldn't be Christmas without Windfighter's hilarious - an old parody song perfectly illustrated with screencaps from SSSS.  ("You're so smart, YOU hang up the lights!")

6. Some years back, Helia crocheted the whole crew, and made various dioramas of their antics. Here's (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1070.30msg=161223#msg161223) one she made as part of an Advent Calendar.

7. One of the saddest, most affecting stories I have ever read: Keeping a Secret (https://archiveofourown.org/works/6424975/chapters/15848443) by Lazy8.  Warning: character death

8. This one is one of the best examples of a collective work by the Forum as a whole: the Things Mikkel Madsen is Not Allowed to Do (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=451.0) thread.

9. All the incredible art we've had over the years - I spent waaaaay too much time scrolling through the SSSS Art Museum trying to find best works of the artists that I've always enjoyed: Haiz/bogkeep, Piney, Johannabelle, starfallz, Unlos, Mirasol, Sc0ut, Mad Robin, Helia, and lost energy among many broken links.  I have several saved from the Advent Calendars I've moderated over the years, fortunately, that serve as an archive.  I urge you all to go into the Events Archive and take a look at those.
Sometimes we'd get a single work from an artist, and many of those are astonishing.
But here, I will give you a work from Kiraly that I admired so much that I requested the original in an art trade, the Sweater Troll: (https://66.media.tumblr.com/639199e7bf3311ba770adaf5021a8d84/tumblr_ofcylaGTYy1qjas7jo1_1280.png)

10. I have contributed some fanworks over the years, so I guess I should include something of mine?  I am proud of many, not so much others, and am continually puzzled why some of the works I spent a lot of time and energy putting together have met with little reaction while something I doodled in seconds gets shared around?  So without further ado I put forward one that combines both: Jobs Mikkel Madsen Has Been Fired From (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21447073/chapters/51107668)

Spoiler: what have i done • show
Why o why did i set myself 10 fanworks?  It is now very late in the evening and I've spent hours archive-diving.  There are so many works that I am now ignoring, like Róisín & Keep Looking & Nellie McEnt's poetry, the in-depth consideration of Mikkel and his backstory through lwise's writings, thegreyarea's crew portraits, the time I spent looking through L00Ney's & Jitter's oeuvre trying to choose among the amazing output ... all this with terrible election result coverage playing over the radio.  Should I have gone back and filled one of the previous prompts instead? Irrelevant question, as I cannot take back the evening, but I still think it's an evening well spent.

SSSS/Known World Decathlon - held as part of the Midsummer/St John's Day games

(I was hoping to make an illustrated piece, but maybe I'll add cartoons later.)

1. Hurdles - still a prime event.  Not too many bases or towns can spare enough flat area to make an old-style running track anymore, so this is now a cross-country running event similar to a steeplechase.  The hurdles generally are bundles of a specific regulation size and diameter, of whatever material is available, spaced more-or-less regularly along a regulation length course.

2.  Lasso distance event - the competitor who can lasso the target from the furthest away wins.  Since there is not an open space available in most games locations, distance also brings the complication of possible obstruction.

3.  Lasso moving target - points for number of targets and speed (they reuse the troll dummies they use to train the cats, which have the added complication of extra appendages)

4. High Jump - still the classic event as in ancient times

5. Cross-bow - points given for a combination of accuracy and distance.  This event usually has no spectators allowed, as the course must generally be outside the guarded perimeter.  Often the target is usually placed on sundry trees on islands across a lake, which gives the advantage of a clear path but the disadvantage of uneven heights from one target to the next.  Dispensation is given if the competitor uses one shot to fell an actual troll or beast happening by instead of the specified target, so long as the distance is roughly similar.

6. Shot put - still more-or-less the same sport, but in the post-Rash games accuracy comes into it.  The competitor who collapses the head of the troll dummy from the furthest distance wins.

7. Log splitting - the competitor can use whatever axe or sledge and wedge suits them, but they have a specified amount of time to split as many pieces as will fit through a standardised diameter hole.  The logs are pre-cut into regulation lengths but are natural logs with knots and variations.

8. Jigsaw puzzle - fastest solve wins, after 5 minutes to study the picture of what it should look like.

9. Kiik - the pre-Rash Estonian sport (https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/kiiking-estonia-swinging-extreme-sports-swings) has swept the Known World.  There are events in the games for pairs and teams, but for the decathlon it's a solo event.

10. Obstacle course / treasure hunt - collect the specified items, in order and as fast as possible, on a given course through a nearby village (or mall) that's been cleared of grosslings and is scheduled to be razed by cleansers. This way, the competitors can't train on the actual course and must navigate any hazards as they go.

So, decathlon.

I agree with you wave that there would be some track and field sports left, while others are not possible and/or relevant any more. So

1 running short course - goal is to have 100 m where possible, but the circumstances dictate the actual length
2 hurdles - like Wave described
3 javelin throwing - to dummy targets, not simply distance
4 - high jump
5 - long jump
6 - running long distance - 10 km cross country
7 - wall climbing
8 - obstacle course (cross between army training and American Ninja type ridiculously difficult obstacles on a varianle built course)
9 - sharp throwing - either knives or axes, contestant chooses (distance is different per weapon)
10 - creative throwing - contestants run a 1 km course with a lot of random items strewn around on and along the track as well as on walls / branches etc depending on location. Targets appear by surprise. The contestant must pick and choose the item to throw, and points are awarded by accuracy and damage. One throw per target with a time limit, points deducted for ”getting killed” i.e. failure to throw anything or getting too close to the target. Further points added or deducted for time spent completing the course.  Plus an overall time limit, after which the contestant is considered to forfeit the event (in formal games this is 15 minutes).

Still not back in the swing of posting doubles, not sure if that will change, but at least I´m still drawing... ^^'

13: One little, two little, 10 little Notoros

A truly unfortunate situation to get stuck in, so it only fits this was the prompt for Friday the 13th... :.D

14: 10 favorite fanworks

On the one hand, why only ten??? On the other hand, now I´m archive diving in the middle of the night!?!
Anyways, here´s my list, also in no specific order because I cannot rank them. :)

1: Oripoke´s when there's fire in my woods it burns me and nobody else (https://archiveofourown.org/works/18476692/chapters/43778641). Every work of fiction that doesn´t have them already deserves an AU with dragons in it, in my opinion. And I really love this one.
2: Grey´s Rum (https://archiveofourown.org/works/44681851)-story set in Forum-Squirrel-world, originally from the bearbeast-chapter-break-filler. Of course I´m biased, but it´s just such a sweet fairytale about our little community here. ;_;
3: This Advent Calendar (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1108.msg168408#msg168408)-contribution by PurpleWyrm from 2019 blew me away when I first saw it and still does tbh.
4: I agree that it´s hard to pick a single sonnett by the amazing NellieMcEnt - so let´s not forget she made a PDF-collection (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gUZ0IMnZkl7__3pQMlJUHPpg9lvSpK07/view) of all of them! (to be found also in the comments of A2, page 285)
5: I have a whole folder of screenshotted SSSS-fan-poetry that I like but that is way too much for here. So I´ll just say be on the lookout in the commentariat for such names as ScottishNottish, Keep Looking, Occisor Corax, Awlwren, Lallicat, Quetano, Corncobman and so many more I can´t think of right now... Just read the poetry in the comments!
6: As someone who admittedly watches way too much Youtube, this animatic about our crew´s language barriers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUWQmLmIRRg) by TopazPearl is one of my favorites as well.
7: Our custom emojies!  :lalli: :tuuri: :emil: :sigrun: :mikkel: :reynir: :siv: :torbjorn: :onni: :trond: :hat: :betterhat: :headbang: :squirrelcookie: :squirrelcookie: :squirrelcookie: I don´t know who made them as this was before my time, but I love them a lot!
8: I´m generally a fan of all the things that were somewhat created in a group effort. Be that chapter break fillers, advent calendars, YoinkTobers, that time we all wrote human!Kitty-AU´s ( starting here (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=193.msg173989#msg173989) ) or drew Emil and Lalli in different goth fashion styles... ( starting here (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=35.msg177809#msg177809) )
9: this thread (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=451.0) is always a good laugh. I´m already ways past ten things, ain´t I?
10: You´re seeing enough of my stuff recently, so I´ll spare you that. I´m just happy to keep making things.

And to end it up, because I´m still drawing something for every day but the prompt is fulfilled, a librarian witch making lists of her favorite books (hairstyle is strongly inspired by Kaisa from Hilda, another witch working in a library). Mostly because the reason I´ve been so busy over the last week is because I started college! To become a librarian. :))

15: Decathlon

It came to me the evening before this prompt that Decathlon is a sport. But by then I´d already planned out my post-apocalyptic outdoor-store-setting, so here you go, an a little different interpretation. :)
I wish I could start over with coloring this one... I had a good color-concept I think, but stumbled in the execution... I also wish I had the time to write a full story about this group of survivors in the early days of the Rash.

Wheee, halftime!!!

Mirasol, I love your art!

Everyone's favourites lists are making me look back at past fanworks myself! I recently re-read SSSS and also some of my old favourite SSSS fanfics. This isn't going to be a list of my precise 10 favourites, because I am honestly not sure how I would narrow it down, but here's my attempt.

In no particular order except the order which they have come to my mind, here I present:

10 SSSS Fanworks I think are Pretty Neat

1. The first Chapter Break Filler (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1122.0) - this one was really significant to me because it was the first event I ran on the forum! It came at a really hard time in my life when I was struggling with some mental health stuff and of course Covid was making everything anxiety-inducing. Everyone's fanworks were wonderful and it's a really good memory for me.

2. This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0D9eE6TYRI) video by Scottishnottish which is a reading of one of their poems, with ambient sound as well. It's very mesmerising and I keep it bookmarked on my computer's browser.

3. These (https://relaxing.ambient-mixer.com/page-211--ssss-comic-2) two (https://movies-other.ambient-mixer.com/scouting-on-a-winter-night) ambient SSSS-inspired soundscapes by Sc0ut.

4. Come to Me (https://archiveofourown.org/works/8002501/chapters/18320845) by jstevens and its sequel - these fics are potentially the most relationally and emotionally intense SSSS fics I have ever read. They're very difficult to put down once you've started. I have a distinct memory of the absolute emotional rollercoaster ride I was taken on during my first readthrough on the train to school.

5. I cannot for the life of me find them anywhere (must've forgotten to bookmark), but KaTaai used to do wonderful readings of different people's poems from the SSSS comments section!

6. Everyone's poetry in the SSSS comments! Nellie McEnt, ScottishNottish, corncobman's intimidating consistency and many more. People were so nice and engaging and the poetry was wonderful.

7. Wavewright's Stranded - a SSSS Superhero AU (https://archiveofourown.org/works/6610714/chapters/15125563) fanfic. I haven't read it in a while but I remember enjoying it a lot and am just about to start a re-read!

8. This (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1317.msg193808#msg193808) fanposter by the participants of last year's Secret Santa really really touched me. Thank you to everyone for making it for me  <3

9. KMOX: The Voice of What's Left of St. Louis, And the Rest of America (http://archiveofourown.org/works/21004697) by falcomreynolds. A fascinating, very engaging au fanfic set in a post-rash USA. Charlie McAvoy lives on a moving town that travels across the American great plains. They are tracing a radio signal being sent out from St. Louis in the hopes of using the radio tower there to broadcast a message to the rest of the world. There's magic, deities, mystery, action, and also cool vultures.

10. The Doom Laser (https://archiveofourown.org/works/17585906) by Feneris. It's a crack fic. The SSSS crew are building a giant doom laser to hold the world hostage. Reynir has an unfortunate pizza delivery experience. There are heists. There are explosions. There is definitely a doom laser. It's hilarious. Please read it.

I'm also flattered that everyone thinks so highly of my poetry! I've barely written any poetry this year - I miss how new SSSS pages provided such great regular inspiration! Potentially my creative potential was also boosted by the number of poems I wrote while being mildly bored in class when I was still in school. I'd like to write more, though - it's just difficult finding the right inspiration.

Yeah, there are things in here I haven't read yet, either, and probably should.  I never got a start on Come to Me, but probably should. (What can I say, I like my shipping low-key.)
I forgot about Sc0ut's soundscapes - those are indeed wonderful.
I also forgot about Laufey's actual knitting of Reynir's mage-world peysa! (She said it was massively heavy.)  Gwenno also did a great Reynir cosplay (check out Gwenno's profile pic here!), and there was a Russian team who cosplayed the whole crew (no time to dig that up right now).
I can also recommend KMOX.

I did not know about Larry the Cat of Number 10 Downing Street, and now my life is enriched.  Thanks again to thorny and Mirasol.  (Seriously, I did not know when I created the prompt!)

Keep, maybe you can reach out to KaTaai on the Discord server to find out where those recordings are?  I don't have time right now to dig for those, but they may be pinned there, or in the language threads here.

The characterisation and level of emotional drama in CTM isn't everyone's favourite - it's definitely not a universal(ish) favourite the way Kasvatus is. However, it is VERY compelling and I think the story does a great job of exploring the aftermath of going through significant trauma (bad coping mechanisms included). CTM also expands on the SSSS world and interesting inter-country bureaucracy. It was written well before the end of adventure 1, so all I can really say is that the silent world adventure ends quite differently in CTM with a different set of characters surviving.

Cute origin story!

My to-read-list is getting increasingly longer... And with all the decathlon-activities we can almost fill post-rash-olympics by now. :))

Anyways, actually only two shitposts pictures today because I can´t post tomorrow. :)

16: 10 Useful and 100% safe Spells and/or Runes

May I present, Mikkel´s latest side-hustle* in Norway.

*not backed up by any expertise, but approved of the generals Eide. Reynir is getting a share of the sales for the few runes that actually do something and weren´t improvised by Mikkel.

17: The power of 10 wings

(Not sure if I understood this prompt right, after looking up the words I settled on interpreting it as "power of ten *insert your preferred measure here*". Sorry if I got it wrong... ^^')

Ten wings. Not quite enough to stack cars into lookout-towers, but way enough to steal your lunch with frightening coordination.

Once again done with acrylic markers and a fineliner, with a smidgeon of alcohol markers.

:sigrun: :sigrun: The classic prompts can always be interpreted in more than one way, and I am delighted with this one (nice perspective)!

I was going to do something with the failed runes that Lalli tried out on the ghosts, including the stick figure, but ... welp.

I love Mikkel the spell-seller! Another one of his great plans! (I have something in the making on this one as well as a couple of others).

While interpretation pf prompts is open, 10 wings, 100 wings, 1000 wings is literally a list of powers of magnitude of wings :) The perspective is really good!

Mikkel..Always up to something..

Mirasol, love the art!!

The seagulls remind me of the time I was at the shore in Florida.  There were signs all over the place stating the seagulls were very aggressive from humans feeding them.  They pretty much said don't and keep your food protected.  Many of the food places that had outside dining were encased in screens.

I bought something and was being careful eating it (Keeping my arm over my mouth and the food close to me.  )  This bird managed to grab it out of my hand and flew off.  The bird had to do a barrel roll maneuver to get at the food, and he did it without me feeling it.

The bird then was on a telephone pole finishing my lunch and flapping its wings laughing at me..

Oh what a journey
A team full of idiots
How will they survive

Into the silence
With an old tank and some guns
They are so dead meat

Abandoned places
Testament to history
The end of mankind

So called medicin
It was never any cure
They just left us here

Darkness of the night
A monster finds its way in
We lost one of them

Here come the voices
Darkness imprisoning me
I choose cold embrace

When you stay I stay
I will not abandon you
Together we stand

Creatures full of wrath
Are you not tired? I am
Come to salvation

I have lost my way
Your heart is my escape pod
Shield me from the dark

Hello don’t go food
Food food food food food food food
Food getting away!

Gosh, are we up to the haiku already??!!  So far behind...

I see what you did there, Jitter - I can just see you counting 'how many Food did I put in?' on your screen.

BUT more importantly, the stanzas for the attack and its effects are lovely.  You managed to pack in so much of Adv. 1 here, evocatively.

(Hmm, 'evocatively' has 5 syllables, maybe I can use that? eventually?)
Title: Re: YoinkTober 2023 - Tenth Anniversary Edition
Post by: Jitter on October 20, 2023, 05:34:38 AM
I totally counted them by pointing with my finger. Twice.

I always count the syllables with my fingers btw. And when I write some, I find myself counting constantly :)

I’m quite happy with how the whole turned out. I first had a few stray ones and a lack of inspiration but once I realized I can do it like that it was quite quick. I had of course planned to prepare them over time to have Proper Haikus, and then didn’t.

Here are a couple of actual Haikus for good measure:

A blizzard howling
Soft snow over trees and streets
Of a dead city

Shores of decaying homes
Headstones of Hotakainens
Sunshine on the lake

Real honest-to-gosh haiku are so lovely, and those two are no exception.  I appreciate them so - their artistry, the stillness I always feel even in the ones describing tempests.

That said, here are my 10 Haiku, serving double-duty for the 10 Characters prompt.  And no, not one of these is the real deal, just doggerel with some requisite number of syllables.

**********
Väinö Väänänen**
Power of a thousand wings
(and many umlauts)

************

Kisu, Pussekatt,
soft and yet so valiant,
Kisa, Missekat

***********

Sigrun's up for it
hack slash stab punch, slice jab crunch
Most Best Vacation!

************

Long suff'ring Mikkel
sighs that he'll never not be
a babysitter.

************

Surma's name means Death
bloody claws, so fearsome, but
less in reality

***********

O Captain Ása!
What did you do that was so
worthy of blackmail?!

************

Emil Västerström
So prideful, but no longer
demands his breakfast cake

************

Kaino, left behind
We saw where the boat ended,
where did they leave you?

***********

Reynir's useful runes
helped shield, but - should have had some
under the Cat-Tank

***********

Onni's home crying
yet true grief turned to anger
and private resolve

************

**Väinö may be on the cusp of having 3 syllables when pronounced properly, but for our purposes we'll call it two.

Edit: the prompt is Top 10 SSSS Characters, but we already have those polls, so I just choose 10 characters.  I certainly love Signe lots better than Surma!
Title: Re: YoinkTober 2023 - Tenth Anniversary Edition
Post by: Jitter on October 21, 2023, 04:35:56 AM
Väinö is definitely two syllable in Finnish, the äi is a diphthong that is pronounced as a long vowel that just happens to change on the way.

N Finnish all diphthongs are long vowels but I have just learned that in some languages including Northern Sami there are also short diphthongs. As of right now, I have no idea how such a thing would be possible to say.

Great Haikus Wave! Excellent word crafting!

As for rule-abiding Haikus, the feeling of stillness is a great way to put into words what I try to achieve! Thank you!

I’m going to do top 10 side characters because team would fill almost all spots. Not in an order of preference.

Ensi Hotakainen - the first and the mightiest and yet she has fallen too

Berit Eide - if it hadn’t been for her, would Dalsnes have survived? Doubtful, with the low effort hippies they were until she drove some discipline into them! Did you know she fought the Nazis?

Signe Sørensen - her no nonsense attitude was instrumental to the later success of the Madsen farm

Gunnar of Dalsnes - we never learned much about him in canon, but in my mind he’s one of those stalwarts who are the backbone of any survivor communication

Stig Västerström - the glimpses we get of him paint a picture of a thoughtful and caring man

Tapsa the Cat Man - he was the first to fall

Väinö Väänänen - the power of a thousand wings!

Jukka and Juha Hotakainen - two brothers and fathers who carried Ensi’s legacy to their sons. The caring vibe from their short appearance balances Ensi’s sterness.

Bjarni Arnason - Reynir’s partner in crime! (What crime? Certainly Reynir did no crimes? Maybe Bjarni did and put the blame on Reynir?)

Agnes the train guardian - she demonstrated for us very early on that the Silent World is not fun and games. She did so with determination and dedication, and successfully too!

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all good minor characters. Minna did very good there!

Heh, yes, the picture was inspired from very similar experiences I or people I know had this year with seagulls... :D

Those are beautiful Haikus!
Jitter, even if they don´t follow all the rules (wait there´s more rules than the syllables-thing?), they seem so perfectly crafted to bring across exactly what you mean. Now that I (sort of) tried my hand at them as well, I noticed how hard it actually is to contain a certain meaning into exactly the right amount of syllables...
Wave, your character-descriptions too! You were also counting words at the Sigrun-one, right? :.D

But wait, hold on... Baby foxes in the Cattank? What did I forget? o_O

I don´t want to post four images, this post would become way too long, so yesterday´s will be in the next batch.

18: ten jobs held by Mikkel Madsen

(I was dead-certain this prompt was "ten jobs Mikkel was fired from" :.D I only noticed when writing it down on the paper and checking the exact wording, but luckily it works either way)
This could be a prequel or sequel to my last drawing involving Mikkel. :)

19: 10 Haiku

I tried to write ten
but I´m just not a poet
I´ll just read along

I´ll just read along
see words turn into pictures
and draw them for you

I tried... :P Poetry is so much harder than prose for me. Pictures luckily aren´t bound by words.
Magic powers are inspired by those of the little prince in the 2010 show.

20: it´s been 10 years since I lost you

Spoiler: spoilers for How to train your Dragon II • show
In HttyD II, one thing that was glossed over too fast in my opinion was explaining why Valka didn´t just come back after being abducted by Cloudjumper and realizing he wasn´t hostile. After all, her son managed to convince the people of Berk that dragons aren´t evil. So perhaps she could have managed that too.
So I tried to explore her POV a bit with this. The struggle between leaving a family behind and returning to a place that disagrees with all your values and is very likely to kill the friends you have made. Having to prioritize your and their safety over taking a chance at trying to change things.

Mirasol, I really like those pages turning into a tree!

Here's one for today:

Ten cats?

Look, I love cats. I want cats. I know that we need cats.

But ten cats? You want to keep all of the kittens?

Yes, I know that they're cute. I know that they're purry. They're all over my lap right at the moment, aren't they? But .. Mama Cat, given the chance, ran outdoors, because she's had kittens all over her for nine weeks now, and she's had about enough of it. LittleTom has been half living at the neighbors', and he misses cuddling with Mama Cat. And Dover just stalked off in a huff, because the kittens are all over my lap, and she wanted her morning cuddle. We really can't properly pat ten cats. I don't even know, this year, whether we can properly feed ten cats --

And five of the seven kittens are female! How many kittens will we have next year, if we keep them all? I don't trust this "rune" thingy to work. Even if magic actually is real, now -- cats have their own magic, I'm sure.

No. No way. Not going to happen. We will keep one kitten. One, I tell you. There are people who have no cats in their houses, they're in danger! The kits will all have good homes, I promise you. You can even visit them and make sure, there's only a few hundred of us, we need to live close within the walls, we're all in and out of each others' houses. One kitten, we can keep; then we'll have four cats, which is plenty. One kitten. Only one.

 . . . maybe two . . .

Thank you for the memories of the foxes, both canon and fic.
thorny, somehow that cat situation sounds like it was taken from life, but gosh, have they not heard of spaying in Iceland? Or is it bad luck to spay/neuter in post-Rash society?
Mirasol, I love your haiku and appreciate that lovely image.  And as always, your Mikkel is his puckish best.
Title: Re: YoinkTober 2023 - Tenth Anniversary Edition
Post by: thorny on October 23, 2023, 08:11:04 AM
That's set in the earlier years. I expect they've got more on their minds than making sure all the cats are spayed -- plus which, they've discovered that cats are a troll warning system, so they do want to increase the population so that everybody can have some.

And even if not, you need to let some cats get pregnant, or else well before year 90 there won't be any cats!

Also -- medical supplies, including anaesthetics, are most likely short. Everything's in short supply. A given community might not have a veterinary previously trained in surgery. And note the reference to anti-cat-pregnancy runes; possibly not trustworthy either because the humans aren't good at them yet, or because the cats' own will might override them.

dmeck, that is the most best collection of cats!

May I humbly add to your list the crew's drawings of Kitty (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=584) ?  Makes it 11 but then again, Kitty...

Baby foxes!!! <3
And a nice reminder of all our kitties!

21: Top 10 favorite SSSS-characters

I also set myself a criteria and made that 10 human characters, mostly because I knew I´d be drawing cats the next day. Thanks to the character-smackdowns I have all of them present right now too! :D
Not in any order except for who I thought fit thematically together in some way.

(read the stuff in italics as one continuous explanation. :V I apologize for whatever this formatting is...)

1: Väinö Väänänen: Seagulls are terrifying in their own right, which only makes this character more fun in my opinion.
2: Captain Ása: I don´t know what you did, but that right there is a story to be told.
3: Emil: tbh I don´t really have a good reason why I like most of these characters. For Emil it´s probably his pretty fleshed out character arc in A1? But that applies to pretty much the whole crew and he was already one of my favorite characters when he was still a douchebag.
4: Sigrun: I mean, just check my signature.
5: Lalli: Especially with the crew, I think I just got really attached to them all.
6: Signe Sorenson: yes, she is putting salt into some annoying customer´s tea right now.
7: Aino Hotakainen: One completely normal person being railroaded into an apocalypse movie and not happy about it. She somehow really grounds this story into reality for me.
8: the terrible trio: they´re just funny. :)
9: Tuuri: And I mean, they´re written to be likable, so there´s really something I relate to with all of them.
10: Reynir: I can´t really pinpoint what it is but it´s there.

22: 10 cats

In this one our Kitty gets some new recruits of a bunch of famous cartoon cats (and some less famous ones I just like). And how I would grade them.

2: Cake the Cat from Adventure Time/Fionna and Cake: Grade A. I´ve watched this one bite off the heads of vampires, she can kill trolls.
3: Winston from "Winston, Agent auf leisen Pfoten": Grade B. Winston is from a German children´s book series. He is on this list because I like the way the covers of those books are illustrated and I wanted to try and immitate it. He´s a spoilt house-cat that thinks himself a James-Bond-level secret agent. Since he´s actually pretty successful at solving crime, he gets to be grade B. He´d be grade A, but he´s a pacifist.
4: Meowth from Pokémon: Grade A. I didn´t watch that much Pokémon growing up, but Meowth struck me as pretty much the most competent member of team Rocket, and I didn´t want Cake to be the only Grade A cat on this list...
5 & 6: Tom from Tom and Jerry and Silvester from Looney Tunes: both Grade B. They´re very good at finding what they want to catch, but absolutely abysmal at catching it.
7: Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes: Grade C. He´s only interested in catching one thing, and that is Calvin. He´s... also a stuffed animal.
8: Garfield from, well, Garfield: Grade C. He probably views being a Grade C cat not only as a full-time-job, but as an artform that he has perfected. Believes he has been granted immunity so he never has to do anything.
9 & 10: Judd and lil´ Judd from Splatoon: Grade C/not yet graded. These two are the last living cats in their story, having survived its respective apocalypse. However, because their owner put them into a cryostasis-pod to save them, not by themselves. They´re now spending their time judging who won in matches and giving tips to newbies, not getting involved into politics. Judd is very much a cat to be a companion.  Little Judd on the other hand. Well, he´s still to young to be graded. But there is a sense of bloodlust in his eyes in my opinion.

I am going to have to rethink my own 10 cats submission, I was just going to do my local cat cafe ones, but I couldn't go this last weekend as I'd planned.  Now I have more grist for the mental mill.  I may extend the repertoire of fictional cats...

In other news, Signe is whistling, like you often draw Mikkel doing! Gosh, your portraits are so spot-on.

Day 24 - Top 10 SSSS pages

Hoo boy.  It's 12 pages, 2 of which I will not use.  I hereby declare that the Language Tree p 196 & Family tree p 629 don't count.  :sigrun:  Problem solved.  Ish.  There are still so many astonishing pages but I decided to leave off collecting at 14.  I know someone will share a page & I will gnash my teeth with chagrin that I missed it.  So in no particular order, my 10 picks, with the images of the pages under cuts for size.

Page 750 - the end of the Tuuri's death sequence, in which Onni in owl form falters in trying to chase Tuuri and freefalls through the night sky, down through toward where Lalli kneels in despair at the water's edge.  Mind-blowing art and emotion. (Also, too long for the Forum's taste, so divvied into top and bottom portions)
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 750 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/kMdb7QU.png)(https://i.imgur.com/yQ69Flb.png)

Page 475 - Ghost attack - Lalli is screaming in his coma, Sigrun & Mikkel fall to the ghosts & wee Kitty is terrified.
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 475 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/gr5uZ4o.jpg)

Page 479 - Hootakainen vs the ghosts - a couple of pages on from the previous one, this is the first time we've seen Onni's owl luonto, swooping in response to Reynir's unwitting call for aid, to rend apart the ghosts who are imperilling the crew.  I couldn't even get all of the TOTALLY EPIC double-page spread into one image.
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 479 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/2Jh9IrA.jpg)

Page 638 - The beginning of the battle against Sleipnope's horde - the crew is grimly waiting, knowing they're not ready. Kitty wakes and her eyes widen in fear. They know it's coming but the dark is smudgy and they can't see. Then one of Reynir's staves lights.  Chilling understated apprehension.
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 638 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/wYelY3V.jpg)

Huh, grim pages all.  Fine, let's mix it up with something completely different.
Page 283 - Captain Ása Harðardóttir takes a phone call from Trond Andersen - what a jolly ship and its jolly sailor boys and the captain contentedly knitting while lounging with the ship's cats.  So much character design and storytelling packed into one page! Also notable for Sigrun's 'dirt and stuff' comment.
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 283 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/QiSHjeL.jpg)

Page 157 - the overhead view of what 'the power of a thousand wings' has wrought, the whole preposterous stack that makes up Väinö Väänänen's outpost.
Spoiler: adv 2 pg 157 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/EjMbg0Q.jpg)

Page 273 - Lalli reluctantly turns to leave the dream world, after trying and failing to catch another glimpse of the mysterious red-headed runner.  So gorgeous, Minna turned it into a print in the store.
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 273 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/zES9ZCg.jpg)

Page 396 - Lalli calls upon his lynx luonto to help him clear out trolls to allow the crew safe passage.  We get treated to (the second half of) a runo and a mic drop of an image as the spell takes hold.  The lore! So much power one skinny mage can command!  The confirmation of much of the fandom's speculation that Lalli was indeed a catboy!
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 396 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/X8xSZ4q.jpg)

Page 266 - Escape from Spot 24 - The crew's first ransacking adventure comes to an explosive end care of Emil's adrenalin-fueled troll remedy, but they realise Lalli is still inside. Until, he is no longer inside but hurtling out of a second-storey window.  Mikkel saves Lalli with an epic crash.
Spoiler: adv 1 pg 266 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/A1Nd7wH.jpg)

Page 205 - Emil triumphant against Tuomas the Tank-Engine.  Such elation! Big Ka-BOOM KRA-RAK!!  After all that time painted as a bit of a bumbler, Emil gets his big moment and he is Stoked.
Spoiler: adv 2 pg 205 • show
(https://i.imgur.com/Jem1BdD.jpg)

Huh. Here I've been lauding how much I love the quiet moments and painterly restful scenes of the ruined old world, and when it comes to it I choose grim battle scenes and explosions like a 22yo focus group junkie high on Fanta.

I guess we all learnt something today.

Spoiler: some that did not make the cut • show
Pillars of lambs, Onni tries the cake, Emil shares the cake, Horde of reporters, the boat is diverting to the Bahamas, Onni's T-pose rescue, Hearty Jane on the train, any number of chapter covers...

Ten favorite pages, hmm. This is going to be tough!

In no particular order

The map of the Known World https://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=66
Really revealed what is the situation in the world right now (in Y90)

The abandoned (or is it really?) early settlement at Käsämä service station near Joensuu http://www.sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=224
I love the “landscapes” that tell us about the world and what it is or in this case has been like to live in it. While the structures may not be exactly realistic they are impressive! I’m of course also biased, having been able to visit this place in person before and after it featured in the comic.

Final goodbye to the Tanktroll http://www.sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=209
This page epitomizes Minna’s skill at making us feel even for the monsters.

This tranquil scene from the train journey http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=155
An early moment of Lalli and Emil bonding, plus some impressive apocalyptic goodness in the form of both milieu and train design.

The photo collage: https://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=46 plus 47
Glimpses to what happened to the prologue characters. Particularly how Berit teaches Aksel to shoot!

Viking Line https://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=92
This page had me squee when reading the first time, it’s so very familiar-thing-after-the-apocalypse

Scary reedy place https://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=65
It’s a sad thing no actual explanation of what this place is (just another place in the Dreamscape? Onni’s defences to keep the Kade away? Outskirts of the Kade’s haven?) and who were the boat people was never given. But the design is superb.

Lalli the hero https://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=777 and  Onni the rescuer https://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=948
Cheating juust a leeetle bit to squeeze in some mage heroics!

Shelter in the rain http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=211 and its counterpart https://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=213
Another double feature, but part of the charm of these two pages is the contrast between the team/found family and the (almost) all alone Onni.

Lake cows https://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=261
I just love the lake cows. This entire sequence from the peaceful night time at the lake to the moment Sigrun finds Reynir’s trick works is just beautiful.

I love silent scenes, where the scenery sets the mood and does the world building. I love the story and the characters too, but those are rarely so distilled into one single page that not many made my list. Such scenes include e.g. Emil and the Spiderdog, Mikkel counseling Sigrun (and Reynir) after the boys are presumed lost (only one existential crisis at a time thank you), Qnne asking Sleipnope if the murderghosts are tired, Lalli’s letter to Emil when he left for Reykjavik, the entire childhood flashback… and many more!

24. My favourite 10 SSSS pages

Whew!! this is a toughie.  Many of people's previous pages are ones I really like also.  I also agree that the language page and Family tree are amazing.  I also cheated, some are story arc's as I thought those were great.

Well here goes!!

1. Onni when he realized Tuuri was gone.  His "I cant be alone" was heartbreaking. ( http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=749)

2. Onni summoning kokko http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=649 and the subsequent cleansing (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=650 (Actually the arc pages 647-650)

3. Reynir's Fylgja Typical doggo. (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=717)

4. Trained kitty, ready to be picked up.  Though she still requires treats.  (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=55)

5. End page.  Though it was sad that the comic ended, the end page is rather homey. (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=560)

6. Väinö explaining that those on guard should not be insane. This made me laugh (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=558)

7. How good is your cook? (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=973)

8.  Onni making a deal with the Swan. (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=331)

9. Lalli telling the story about what happened to his family and town (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=117 Pages 117- 145)

10.  I gave you one job!! (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=507)

N Finnish all diphthongs are long vowels but I have just learned that in some languages including Northern Sami there are also short diphthongs. As of right now, I have no idea how such a thing would be possible to say.
Remember the gulls from Finding Nemo? "Mine? Mine!"? That's "meins" in German, with virtually the same pronunciation save for the last letter.

27.  10 Soldiers
Ten little Soldiers went to clear a mine; One met a troll and then there were nine.
Nine little Soldiers sat up very late; One missed guard duty and then there were eight.
Eight little Soldiers looking for a heaven; One decided to stay and then there were seven.
Seven little Soldiers chopping up sticks; One chopped themself in half and then there were six.
Six little Soldiers one with a hive; it turned out to be the rash then there were five.
Five little Soldiers fighting a monster's maw; One got 'et and then there were four.
Four little Soldiers going out to sea; A sea beast swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little Soldiers walking past an old zoo; A creature still lived there and then there were two.
Two little Soldiers sitting in the sun; One was a troll and then there was one.
One little Soldier left all alone; The soldier was smart and just went home.

Then there were none.

Spoiler: show

This is the original poem (there are oodles of variations. Most are not PC ) I think there was an Agatha Christie book also.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_Then_There_Were_None

Ten little Soldier Boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little Soldier Boys sat up very late; One overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little Soldier Boys travelling in Devon; One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.[13]
Seven little Soldier Boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.
Six little Soldier Boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Five little Soldier Boys going in for law; One got in Chancery and then there were four.
Four little Soldier Boys going out to sea; A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little Soldier Boys walking in the zoo; A big bear hugged one and then there were two.
Two little Soldier Boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one.
One little Soldier Boy left all alone; He went out and hanged himself

Then there were none

There is also a horror remake that is loosely based on this

Spoiler: show
Tom and Jerry is Hanna and Barbera.
Sylvester is Looney Toons

Sorry.  I love my cartoons..

Whoops, my bad! I was going off of how the show is marketed in Germany, where it´s just called "Tom and Jerry" with no other names attached. :) So I meant what I wrote as "Tom from the show Tom and Jerry and Sylvester from the Show Looney Tunes".

Wave, I´m glad I could be an inspiration! And why yes of course, they´re family after all. :D (I didn´t actually do this intentionally lol. I think it´s because they have a similar vibe to their personality in my eyes that depicting them like this makes sense to me.)

I´m super-busy this week, so I can only slowly catch up with posting and reading... But here are some more entries if mine:

23: 10-minute fanart

I forgot to mention it last time, but Wave, I salute you for managing three characters with quite a bunch of detail for this one!
I realized with this prompt that I draw much slower than I think I do. :D
This would be my obligatory yearly Legend of Zelda fanart, in this case of Sonia from Tears of the Kingdom (which I don´t really count as a spoiler, she´s in the trailer), one of my favorite characters from that game. I really wanted to be spontaneous with who I´ll draw for this prompt, and it is now beyond me why I ended up choosing a character who has such a detailed design. :') This is how far I got, I´m a little mad at it...

24: 10 favorite pages of SSSS

...so mad at it in fact, that I decided to draw her again without a time-limit to do her proper justice. This one probably took like 1,5h...?
I hope you can see it properly, the photo looks really washed out on my laptop though it looked fine on my phone...

I still fulfilled the actual prompt of course. (I would like to use this moment to thank past me for not collecting these pages via numbers, but silly descriptions for current me to find the links to... -_-)
I excluded all pages that were mentioned before to make my list smaller. (EDIT: All that I realized at least... Jitter already mentioned the prologue-montage, whoops ^^') They´re in a random order.

1: http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=46 (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=46) page 46 and 47 which I chose to count as one as it´s a double. Such a cool way to do a montage.
Spoiler: show
(http://sssscomic.com/comicpages/46.jpg)(http://sssscomic.com/comicpages/47.jpg)

2: http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=492 (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=492), Sigrun being pulled into the water by the watertroll while Emil is fighting the Bladderbarbies. The whole scene really, but this page I find the most impressive visually.

3: http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=745 (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=745), this one would be the page in Tuuri´s death scene that always makes me cry.

4: http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=68 (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=68), the first rule, one image to introduce the concept of this world. It gets continuously disregarded, but it was still a powerful page.

5: http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=158 (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=158), Lalli having a vision of a troll on the train. Probably one of the most haunting troll-designs for me.

6: http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=2 (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=2), the technically first real page of A2. What a way to introduce an anthagonist!

7: http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=98 (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=98), the crew rowing to Toivosaari. I´m beginning to notice a pattern... The pattern is water...

8: http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=275 (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=275), the Hukkas appearing under the bridge. I really like the color-scheme of this chapter, and the whole Hukka-scene is iconic.

9: http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=412 (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=412), Surma comes running. Hadn´t gotten proper chills in while from an SSSS-page when this one rolled around and yanked me out of my false sense of comfort.

10: http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=488 (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=488), What the Kade looks like from the inside. It reminds me of some Legend of Zelda dungeons, so this is most definitely a bias, but it´s just a pretty cool location.

I also have honorable mentions, in the form of things I never noticed until going through the comic looking for my favorite pages:
- In the (e)book-version of the first book of A1 there are additional Infopages about Mora
- when the crew makes radio-contact (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=280) with the quartet from the silent world for the first time, you can see the train getting repaired in the background behind them
- It´s not like (http://sssscomic.com/comic2.php?page=81) anyone wanted to go to Bornholm anyways... Poor Reynir! :reynir:

25: 10 years ago today (character POV)

Ten years ago today, Reynir listened to the stories about the known and silent world his cool siblings had to tell. Today (as in, post A2), he has his own to contribute.

29.  Troll Ten-tacles

The pictures are really creepy/scary.  I am going to spoiler them

Spoiler: show

These are from a movie in the 80's called Poltergeist 2.  I find these movies a bit on the creepy/distributing side.  In the second movie there is a thing that tries and takes people with power (he is after the little girl in the movie) .  the monster is very troll-like and definitely is kade-like

Here is one such photo

That monster is one incredibly well-designed puppet, dmeck! I must admit, despite having studied 3D-art, I´m still almost more interested in movies that do without (a lot of) it and still create something like this. Thanks for pointing me to this movie!

26: A perfect 10

I humbly apologize for this very uncreative shitpost.

27: 10 soldiers

Someone´s elaborate nutcracker-collection. Not all of them depict soldiers, mostly because I eventually ran out of interesting ways to style the typical uniform.
The one on the top-right is styled after the Toy Soldier from the Mechanisms, because it gave me the idea to draw this. (Even though the Toy Soldier is normally not a nut-cracker. :.D )

28: The Top 10 (Clickbait Challenge)

I had like half an hour at all to fulfil this prompt, which was a bummer, because I think it´s one of the most interesting ones from this list. But I only have a title and a silly little doodle about all the things I was actually supposed to be doing that has nothing to do with it for you.
Regularly scheduled program with things I put more effort into resumes with the next batch of prompts. :)

Effort works, Mirasol, even low effort.  (spoken as someone who has not applied the effort I thought I could)

Your stuff is awesome, **mwah**

Mirasol, everyone, your contributions are great!

I’ll have you know I have a couple of stories for these prompts in the making. Hopefully promises will help me actually pull through with them! Stupid work interfering with real life again! I’m on the plane about to go to  Lapland again, this time to a conference / trade fair thingy that will a) claim my evenings and b) has already caused me to be busy with work before it, and likely after too. It’s interesting and it’s nice to go in person after the pandemic years, but it’s also putting a strain on my YoinkTober!

psst no sweat, and no judgement
We're here to have some fun, enriching our lives. A couple of these are WIPs in my head, too. What can you do?

Mirasol, your art is wonderful and this made me have a literal out-loud laugh when I saw it, so don't worry about it being silly!

Mirasol, if you don't mind, I'd like to borrow the flower border design from the perfect 10 for some embroidery; I love it!
Low effort or not, your work is always a delight; like others, I got a laugh of appreciation out of your "silly little doodle"!
That is a fine collection of nutcrackers! Loved them all!

Sure Buteo, I don´t mind. If you do I´d love to see it! :))

Jitter, if you still feel like finishing those stories, I´ll be looking forward to them! But if not, that´s fine too.

So, then this is my last batch!
Happy 10th Birthday SSSS!
I didn´t do an extra-contribution on account of being away for most of yesterday, so let me just tell you how this challenge was once again so much fun! Thank you again Wave for providing inspiration for my drawing antics!!! And your, Dmeck, Jitter, thorny, Keep Looking, Noonnoommoon, Iwise... I´m surely forgetting someone, but your contributions were a delight to read and to look at!!!
I´m looking forward to YoinkTober every year. But damn college-homework is a lot more time-consuming than anticipated... So having free evenings from now on is much needed... :.D

29: Troll 10-tacles

A good monster-prompt, just what I needed on that day.
I don´t think it really ended up looking like a troll, but hopefully it sufficiently ended up in the general ballpark of scary.

30: thoughts on Chapter 10

Did you know that there are squirrels in both chapter 10s?
Other than that, I don´t really know what to say here. I like both 10th Chapters. I forgot just how much plot fit into the one in A1. Meanwhile, A2´s 10th Chapter is a just as needed break in the action with the crew reuniting with Onni and going to the lehto.

To fit the theme I redrew a panel from one of the 10th Chapters, and my choice fell on one from page 462 of A1. I was still in a spooky mood. :)

31: ten puns (the horror)

For starters, one horrendous Halloween-howler:
I was going to be a vampire for Halloween, but my brother bit me to it. At first this put me into a grave mood, but then I suggested to add a bat to complete the costume. He asked me since when vampires play baseball.
(In reality, neither me nor my brother went as anything but sleep-deprived college students as we were in college until 7:30pm each. :.D Otherwise I would have probably been a witch, but at least I will get the chance to dress up as one now probably not very unexpected undead this weekend.)

Well, my brain drew a blank on this one. :P But I drew a picture instead!

Here´s one final witch-character, one specializing in tricks, shenanigans and bad PUNchlines to be exact.

(Every pun intended, as bad as they were. I am cringing rereading this.)

Thank you Mirasol for your steady contributions! Your art is always a delight. BTW the commission piece from you is one of my favorite "fan arts" but as it's not strictly speaking fan art (or is it? There is a squirrel cookie!) I didn't put it on my list. But it's on the dining room wall close to my teapots and it makes me happy to see it :) Thank you everyone, and especially Wave!

Here's a little backlog, with our most beloved Cat Tank. Not even a full month late!

EDITED to add that I meant to say translations are omitted for dialogue flow. The required translators are present. The Cat Tank does not have babelfish functions!

Stepping out of the Cat Tank, Emil stumbled on the stairs. Again. “Stupid useless tin can! Why does it have to be so complicated!”

“Useless? Do you really think so?” Mikkel was mildly amused. “I’m certain it’s rather useful. Walking all this way would have taken much longer.”
“Well, ok, yeah, I’ll give it that. I acknowledge we need transport.”

“What is it?” Tuuri joined the conversation.
“It’s nothing” Emil mumbled.
“Emil thinks the tank is useless” Mikkel supplied, always helpful.
“Useless! How can you say that!” Tuuri was indignant over such an insult at her beloved machine. “It transports us AND the books. You wouldn’t want to carry the books, would you?”
“Well ok, it does help us and the books move.”
“I will have you know it is excellent transportation equipment. It can go both forwards and backwards! It even has this handy mirror, where I can see where I’m driving when backing up. I don’t know how it’s only on the left side, but it’s still very useful. And with the floodlights I can drive even in darkness.”

“Hey guys! What are you talking about?” Reynir joined in.
“Emil seems to think the tank is useless!”
“Oh no, surely not! The tank provides us with warm water for laundry! And your decontamination baths!”
“Speaking of decontamination, it also has the decom chamber.”
“Oh yes, that is very useful! Otherwise, I would have to wash everything every day! And! Not to forget the food storage! It’s thanks to the tank we have so much food with us!”
“Yes. Food storage, indeed.” Mikkel agreed. Very, very nonchalantly.

“What is this? You have found a food storage?” Sigrun sounded enthusiastic.
“Sorry, no. We are talking about how useful the tank is. Like how we can store our food inside it.”
“Oh yes! And it can also store you, the non-immunes! You would be dead already if we didn’t have it for protection. It’s almost like a moving fortress. Especially with the perimeter warning system! Well, that can’t be set up while moving, but you know what I mean! It protects us! And! And! I have just had a marvelous idea! Imagine, it would be even better if it had a biiiig gun in it! Imagine how big bullets it could fire! Really, such a thing would be most best!”

“Okay okay okay” Emil threw his hands up. “So maybe it does provide transport, carrying capacity, two-way movement with a reversing mirror…”
“And lights! So it moves forwards and backwards, day and night!” Tuuri was very proud of her tank friend.
“Yes. Floodlights. And, storage space, warm water, decon, protection and a warning system. But other than that it’s just an almost useless tin bucket!”

“Mrrh?” Lalli popped his head from the doorway.
“Emil doesn’t like the tank! He thinks it’s useless” Tuuri complained to her cousin.
“I agree it is clumsy, slow, noisy and stupid looking. But all of you like sleeping inside, especially him. So, we had to bring the stupid machine.”
“See, Emil, even Lalli thinks we need the tank. For sleeping.”
“I give up! The tank is fine!”
“It is the most best tank! I knew you would eventually understand it, with my tutoring!”

Mirasol, the tentacles are quite lovely! (I'm sorry I don't find them spooky, they're very aesthetic, okay?  I love the designs on them.) But the ghostie redraw of chapter 10 does give me that tentacle feeling like the original did - appropriately spooky!
And your witch character is impressive, both in terms of character design and costuming. *flails* You did such a great job overall this month!

Jitter, your functionalities of the Cat-Tank is fun.  Poor Emil.

Did he ever get used to people disagreeing with his kvetching?

Many thanks to all who participated in this year's YoinkTober, and if, like Jitter, you still have something in the WIP pile, what the hey? Carry on and post it anyway!

Thank you Wave for the illustration to the story  :sigrun: :emil: :lalli:

I have more in the WIP basket so here’s hoping!
