Noonnoommoon it is today so you are right on time! I love your landscape, a lovely place for Sigrun to go boating!

Dmeck, those are some creepy pictures! Especially the road. Where? Why? But please tell me the library is AI generated! All those books! (Although nowadays a lot of old books are problematic waste if you need to get rid of them for whatever reason - bulky and heavy, and surprisingly uninteresting!)

Thorny, I hope the family may even be able to find a car. Not usable here as the roads are blocked, but maybe further out from the city? This is very early days so shouldn’t be impossible. I don’t know whether we’ll ever hear from them again or not.

;D

Hey I love your 10 steps for growing sunflowers in pots!  I opened it excitedly because I live in an apartment and the thought of growing sunflowers was very exciting.
Alas, I have now scuttled the idea...
But this is still highly appreciated, as is the insight into your game du jour.

I didn´t mean to entirely discourage you! ^^' My steps were a little overdramatized for humor´s sake, I admit, I do believe with some tweaks you can grow potted sunflowers just fine. After all, even mine grew and bloomed. Actually, a lot of people I know did the same thing this year - they also ran into the same issues, mind you, but all in all we all ended up having flowers.
So let me add some improvement-steps to growing potted sunflowers, based on what I´d do differently next time:

Spoiler: Not quite 10 more steps. More like 5. • show

1: from the get-go, try to pick a kind of sunflower that doesn´t grow too tall. While I did buy the shortest ones my local grocery-store had, they´d still reach up to 2m if they had the space (my highest got up to 1,70m roughly). At some point the lever-principle just took over...
2: grow them with a stick to keep them upright from the beginning. They really rapidly get a quite thick stem and then they´re stuck in whatever position they have right now, which might be very prone to falling over. I only properly stabilized one, which was the one that fell over the least.
3: try to keep them at a place that is relatively safe from the wind. It tends to catch in the leaves.
4: Even if they do fall over, that doesn´t mean they´re done for. I called them dramatic for a reason. They look inches from death really fast, but just add water and wait five minutes, they´ll be good as new. Falling over a few times won´t kill them.
5: Only thing I can´t think of a good solution for is how much water they need... But that is just something inherent to Sunflowers I think... A big overpot or bowl is probably a good idea.

But yeah, as thorny said, there´s plenty of flowers that grow better in pots. :) I´m sure you´ll find a good fit!

***

Jitter, you chose the idea well, I quite like this story!

(Am I overthinking this?)

No, I agree. Reminds me of those tales of people dying of thirst in the desert despite still having a water-supply because they wanted to save it. Sure, lack of food won´t kill you as fast, but malnutrition does worsen your reflexes and senses which would be fatal when you´re out there with trolls.

Dmeck, those are some nifty places to have post-apocalyptic adventures in! Are any of them real?

noonnoommoon, happy Birthday Sigrun! Proudly standing on her boat there!

***

My contribution for Sigrun´s birthday will be posted with my next batch, my habit of drawing late in the evening doesn´t work well with things I have to take photos of. So I´ll just wish her a happy birthday for now. :sigrun: :sigrun: :sigrun:

5: 10 Visions of Icelandic Mages

A1 in visions for Reynir, taking inspiration from the aesthetic of the briefly introduced but ultimately scrapped omen... I can´t find the page right now.
I kinda regret adding the green though.

6: 10 years of progress

I couldn´t come up with a good story for this one, so instead I dug up something I drew 10 years ago to do a "draw this again"-challenge (10 years of drawing-progress!). Coincidentally, 10 years ago I was also 10 years old, so it fits the theme even better. :.D
This is a jackalope I had to invent for an artproject (which is why I had it dated). I then proceeded to draw it on every scrap paper for a while. It´s a mixture of... squirrel, owl and frog? Probably some more, but these were the ones I could identify from looking at it/remembered putting in there. In the new iteration I tried to make it look a little more like a coherent animal rather than just some body-parts stuck together. The body ended up looking less like feathers (as I intended) and more like fur, so now it looks more like just a winged squirrel with frog-feet? Hm...

supposedly studying, most likely drawing…

“Good morning, class! Today we will start learning Icelandic, the most important language after our own Norwegian!  We’ll get started with something easy, because much of Icelandic is similar to Norwegian. So, who can tell what I say now?” *teacher proceeds to count 1-10 n Icelandic*

”Yes, that’s right, this was the numbers. Most of them are very similar.”

“Yes, I got it now! You just take the normal word and add -ir to the end! Easy peasy!”

“Well, Sigrun dear, it’s a bit like that but there’s something more to it too. Now, please copy the names of numbers in your notebooks”

*writes on board*

1. Einn - en / ett

2. Tveir - to

3. Þrír - tre

4. Fjórir - fire

5. Fimm - fem

6. Sex - seks

7. Sjö - sju

8. Átta - åtte

9. Níu - ni

10. Tíu - ti

“Ein, tveir, what! Teacher, you have made a mistake! I know all the letters and that is not a letter you used in three!”

“Yes it is! It’s (thorn), like in Thor! Don’t you know anything?”

“Well, children,  this is one of the trickier things about Icelandic. There are some letters that we don’t use. These are… what is is Sigrun?”

”I don’t need to learn this! I will go out to practice.”

”You will do nothing of the sort. And everyone needs some Icelandic. When you are grown up, maybe you are a general like your parents, and need to liaise with the Icelanders about military matters?”

”I will be a field leader and most best (teacher sighs audibly) troll hunter! I will never take a boring desk job like mum and dad! And always use indoor voice only!”

”Nevertheless, this is what we are studying now. Sit back at your desk, and do indeed use the indoor voice for now.
So, I was saying, there are the Þ and Ð, which…”

”Auuughh! I’ll never learn this!”

Mirasol, your winged squirrel is lovely! We have a ton of acorns this year, and the squirrels are very active. I bet they’d like to have wings as they often need to jump very fast when our girls (dogs) come out. Reynir with his doggo is sweet as always.

I wrote a little story in honor of today's prompt, 10-year-old child(ren), although I published it a little early.  It is Mikkel and Michael's Midnight Misadventure.

Can I claim now that Sigrun in ten years old in my previous instalment?

The summer was weird. The weather was reasonably good, but there was a strangeness in the air. A lot of people seemed to be restless. Even more restless, that is, than is common during the summer, when the light nights seem to make many Icelanders slightly overexcited. It was as if a weird epidemic of bad dreams was haunting the nation.

In June there were several reports of blood in the sea. The local police officers or sometimes the Coast Guard were alerted in Vopnafjörður, Kalfafellsstadur, Ísafjörður and several times near Reykjavik, to attend what was supposedly several whales in distress near the shore bleeding into the sea. None of the events offered any explanation why different people had seen and sometimes smelled the sea to have been covered in blood, on different shores all around the country.

In July, great flocks of strange birds were sighted. Iceland is rich in marine birdlife, but these seemed to be dark terrestrial birds. Farmers were worried that the invasion would result in their crops getting eaten, because such birds don’t have much natural food on the island nation. But miraculously no damages were caused. The birds were seen sweeping on the sky, but no one seemed to know what they ate or where they roosted.

August saw an influx of false alarms of volcanic activity. A hiker saw Hekla belching smoke and ash, but when he reached the nearest point of cell reception, nothing was happening. A family ice climbing on Vatnajökull got a fright of their lives when the daughter swore, she saw lava fountaining to the sky from Bárðarbunga. The Lakagígar were seen spewing vapor and lava, and yet nothing out of the ordinary shaking registered on the seismometers.

When autumn came and the Allting resumed session, it was established that it wasn’t over. Jóhanna had recurring nightmares, filled with blood and gunfire. This could have been a delayed reaction to the crisis of 2009 and to what could have happened then, if the prime minister were the only one with nightmares. But no. Oddný dreamt of a threatening, breathing darkness. Steingrímur kept seeing blighted fields almost every night. Unnur’s restless nights were filled with storm clouds billowing from the sea in all directions, threatening to engulf Iceland completely.

The national decision makers were worried. Ólafur laughed at them at first, but as the same dreams kept repeating, it was becoming obvious that everything wasn’t right. Nobody knew why some people were riddled with bad dreams while others weren’t. If it were in the air, or water, then certainly it should affect everyone? It was also oddly specific, with each other having their own nightmare. Until it wasn’t. Early October the pattern changed. Now Steingrímur would see the gunfire, and Oddný the storm. And the next night it was different again.

Mid-October saw the brightest and weirdest northern lights ever. People of both the political leadership and the common townspeople saw a neverending dance of forms over the night sky. It was very beautiful. Except… didn’t that look a bit like a… tentacle? As if something humongous with lots of teeth? Did you see how it looks like as if a city was crumbling on the sky just now?

On the first of November, the Allting was in session and both the president, and the ministers were present. Suddenly several people were overcome with the strangest phenomenon. While others didn’t see or hear anything, Jóhanna, Oddný, Unnur and Steingrímur were all frozen in place for a while. When they were again back to their senses, they all claimed that two huge ravens, black as midnight and big as to fill the room (and more, “actually it was a bit like they both were inside here and weren’t”) had spoken to them, uttering this message:

“Are you daft? You have been warned since the summer. Do something, NOW!”

“Um, so, are you saying you are getting some sort of visions like Icelandic mages?” Ólafur was uncomfortable, but this had been going on for too long to ignore.

“Yes. Yes we are. We are closing the border as of midnight tonight.”

“But! Surely you can’t…”

“All in favor raise their hand” Einar the speaker of Allting asked. By vote of 33 against 30, it was decided that the border be closed for a while. Just in case there was something in the message of those two strange ravens.

I took a little liberty with the people. Einar was the speakter in late 2013 and Ölafur was president, but Jöhanna's term as prime minister actually ended earlier in 2013 (I don't know the exact date). But more of the Seiðr were women, so I shuffled the timeline a bit. And of course I don't know which ones of the Icelandic members of parliament and other top politicians are Seiðr in this reality, so I apologize for any mistakes made in the preceding description.

”So, let’s see we have everything we should be taking. What little food we have left, water bottles, all the candles and matches…”
“Flashlights, batteries…”
“Oh, go get all the batteries out of remotes, clocks, fire alarms… if there’s any power left, we are taking it.”
”Good thinking! And let’s take the big container too.”
”It’s far too heavy to carry!”
”No it isn’t when empty. Joona can carry it. We may need a container later.”
”Well, all right, I guess we can ditch it later if it’s too unwieldy. What else?”
”sleeping bags… check, puukko… check,  axe… check, warmest jackets, boots, hats… check.”
”We should also take the knives.”
“What was it Joona dear? Knives?”
”Yes. All of the good kitchen knives.”
“How come?”
”We don’t have any guns, right? Or do we?”
“No guns, son. You know that.”
”Yeah, well, it’s a zombie apocalypse out there. If I can’t have a gun, I want a knife. Even Elli should have one! And let’s take the bat. Can we put some nails into it?”
”Nails? I don’t think we have such long nails at hand. But I suppose we could take the bat. It’s not like it’s that heavy.”
”What are you talking about? We can’t fight the… the. Things.”
”Mommy, we may not have a choice. But we want to flee, not fight m right?”
”Yes, of course. We only want to flee.”
“Then let’s also take a bit of hosepipe.”
”Hosepipe??”
“Yes. It’s needed get gas from one car to another. You know, put the hosepipe in the fuel tank, suck to start the flow and the gas will flow out of the tank. We should take a bucket too.”
“Joona, you are a 10-year old child. Why do you know such things?”
“Well, um… remember when you wouldn’t buy me the game The Last of Us?… Samu’a brother has… had it. I have learned some useful things!”
”Well, I… ah… good, I guess. Grab the hosepipe, dear. And the bat.”

Two bangers in a row, Jitter!  Outstanding, and I really get the vibe from the Allthing story!

lwise, your story was genuinely scary, and very well done for it!  Definitely part of the vibe with Michael & Mikkel.

(at my location, it's 10 AM on the 10th. So here's my Year 10:)

We're still alive.

That thought's in my head every morning, now, when I wake up; though I'm a little less surprised by it than I was in the first few years. I'm getting steadily more surprised that I myself am still alive, though, so that rather balances it out.

It's my birthday; today I've made it to 80. And today we've made it ten years from the day they closed the borders. That particular combination of anniversaries has been very disconcerting; on the one hand, a double day of celebration, for my life and our community's? but on the other -- a celebration of the day the world died? How can we celebrate on that day!

One of our survivors was -- is -- a rabbi. She's been writing us a ceremony -- it changes a little every year, at least so far -- influenced by the Jewish combination, in a few days at about this time of year, of a celebration of life and the New Year and of regret and atonement. It seemed to fit. It seemed essential for her to do something. She's the only Jewish survivor that we know of. She was forty-three in year zero, and tried, desperately, to get pregnant. That hasn't happened, and seems even more unlikely to, now. But she has three converts -- despite the fact that something very odd seems to be happening involving the Nordic gods. (If they're real after all, then maybe so is the Jehovah who said 'No other gods before Me?') And one of those converts is in the seventh month of pregnancy. Will future generations think of Jews as stereotypically blonde and tall?

Yes, not only are we still alive: we're having children. Three born in the first year, two from pregnancies already established in the Old World, and the third from desperation sex during the Change. Then none for five years -- could we even feed the mouths we had? Then a child late in year six, and two in year seven, and four born so far this year with another two pregnancies well along. Almost enough to replace each year's deaths, by now. Maybe we'll hold, at not quite 300, and drop no further. Maybe we'll gain a bit of cropland, and start going up again.

Maybe we're really still alive, and not just dying slowly.

Gosh, thorny, that was beautiful and well thought-out!
I admit I laughed at the idea of future generations thinking of Jews as stereotypically tall and blonde.

Spoiler: self promo for a story I wrote once on the topic • show

I had once considered what happened to the Jews, in a story that also took in Onni's grief, back when we didn't know what was going to happen to Tuuri. That story, however, would have been much different from the POV of Y10, rather than Y92, so I really like where you've gone.
