Not sure if she's been mentioned here before, but I fell in love with Sóley and her music. It's so calming, but unnerving at the very same time.

This is my favourite song of hers so far, along with the playlist for the We Sink album:
Spoiler: show

Here's the whole album on which the song is, called We Sink:

Also, there is this live radio performance, which was miraculous, and her smile so cheerful and wholehearted.

This was propably the song that really made me fall in love with violins in music since just wow.

I'm usually somewhat unimpressed by Icelandic rappers, but this guy Ari, he's pretty awesome. Lyrics in the cut.

Spoiler: show
Í djúpum bókum blaðaðu,

fróðleikinn aðlaðaðu,

í hugarhillur raðaðu,

á eigin þróun hraðaðu.

Í þekkingu þig baðaðu

á blekkingum þig varaðu.

Neglur, reglur, nagaðu.

Sjálfur sjálfið agaðu.

Vítis spítu sagaðu,

í við, lífið lagaðu.

Með nóg af ró þér hagaðu.

Erfið kerfi klagaðu.

Líkt og sjórinn fjaraðu.

Í öllu fram úr skaraðu.

Ástríðunni svaraðu.

Djúpt í hugann kafaðu.

Frelsissönginn galaðu,

með auðmýktinni talaðu.

Friði niðurhalaðu.

Hugargullið malaðu.

Ástar þorsta svalaðu.

Eigin hugsun manaðu

og út í dauðann anaðu.

Egóinu banaðu

við sólarhjúpinn tanaðu.

Hræðslukippi lamaðu.

Kapphlaupinu tapaðu

af háum stalli hrapaðu.

Eftir öðrum apaðu

en eigin hugsjón skapaðu.

Við sálarkröftum stjakaðu,

andlaust skeggið rakaðu,

í heila beinum brakaðu,

í öllum gjörðum slakaðu,

við möguleikann hakaðu

að vera ekki þjakaður.

Hjartablöðkum blakaðu!

Þakklætinu makaðu

á hugarplötu og bakaðu.

Illan mann ásakaðu,

um illar gjörðir masaðu,

orðspor djöfla slasaðu,

og ef þú ert dasaður
,
gefstu upp og hrasaðu.

Eiginn hroka mataðu

skítugur útataður

veginn ekki rataðu.

Ekki elska hataðu,

töfrum lífsins glataðu.

lately I've been listening to the newest Of Monsters and Men-album on repeat and repeat, it's great. They're icelandic, aren't they?

I love the dulcimer and hang drum (Just "hang" for us in France), the sound is fantastic but sadly it's very difficult to buy one.

So sorry for not checking back sooner!   :-[

It is the patter song from The Pirates of Penzance, "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General".  You're right, he originally used that tune for the periodic table, but more recently used another tune, IIRC.

Here are 2 wonderful musical bookends, dedicated to cellists who hate Pachelbel, but triumph in the end.
 :)

 8)  Pay attention to the cellist, next, deliberately dropping his bow at one point....

I love these.   ;D

It's the Fourth of July, so I'm posting some America-themed songs.

"This Land Is Your Land," by Woody Guthrie
* Arlo Guthrie, Willie Nelson, and others:
/>
* Soulful, sultry rendition by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings:
/>
Some Aaron Copland (because nobody depicted the American frontier better in classical music than a gay, Jewish, socialist New Yorker.  ;)  Ain't that America. )
* Four Dance Episodes from "Rodeo":
- Buckaroo Holiday
- Corral Nocturne
- Saturday Night Waltz
- Hoedown  (Most Americans will recognize the main theme, originally "Bonaparte's Retreat," and some of you may remember it from the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" ad campaign)

Ray Charles' version of "America the Beautiful" (live from the 2001 World Series):
/>
And now for something completely different:
"Independence Day" by David Byrne
www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH1kRTd_Xdw

Lastly:
"Don't Fence Me In" (by Cole Porter -- not the person you think of in connection with cowboy songs -- version by David Byrne)
« Last Edit: July 26, 2015, 11:09:50 PM by Sunflower »
"The music of what happens," said great Fionn, "that is the finest music in the world."
