I call people 'hon' and 'babe' and 'sugar' all the time irl and everyone thinks I'm being super condescending when I'M NOT MEANING TO BE.

It's a Southern Thing.  In my case, it's a grandparent thing.

I just checked my posts, and discovered my native reserve saved me.  Whew!  ::)

Good to know then! I just need a t-shirt now that reads, I'M NOT CONDESCENDING I'M FROM TEXAS.

And fairly unrelated tangent, just about everyone I've met in California so far  m u m b l e s. I used to think it was just my relatives, but I'm only catching about half of what my coworkers say and I'm beginning to understand how Emil must feel around Mikkel. Like they'll be saying stuff and I'll assume that they're talking to themselves because it's so quiet, but then there's a pause and I realize they're waiting for me to respond. They probably all think that I'm somewhat deaf, heh, especially since it's likely that I sound really loud to them.

I'm going to become a broke Icelandic hobo. You'll know it's me because I'll be surrounded by a pile of books.

heyy i hope you didn't get the impression that it's bad to use pet names! I don't mind them, I'm just very unused to being called them and most of my exposure to them is in a condescending context.

...I'm trying to think of any norwegian pet names that are actually used seriously and can't think of a single one

welcome back, Ana!

Haha!  ;D And speaking very obliquely of pets and names and puns, my two dogs' names were based on a stealth pun. They were Norwegian elkhounds and were named Elli and Odie (Odin) for the Norse gods. My dad was very proud of coming up with that  :P

Aww, elkhounds!  They're so cute!  Our family had a Norwegian elkhound about 25 years ago.  We called him "Blaze" because of the white patch on his chest.  He was overweight, noisy, and not very bright, but he was very friendly.
"The music of what happens," said great Fionn, "that is the finest music in the world."
