Really nice, dmeck! I already commented on AO3, however couldn't stop thinking about a possible prank by our usual suspect...
So your story inspired this...
Mikkel looks concerned, examing the broken toe.
It hurts, but the way Mikkel looks makes it hurt even more. "What's the problem?" Emil asks.
Instead of answering, Mikkel retrieves a small bag from a side pocket and opens it. There's a syringe, two or three ampoules with a clear liquid inside, and a large scissor. To Emil's horror Mikkel grabs the scissor and looks with a deeply serious face at the broken toe, and then at Emil.
"What? No! No way! That can't be necessary! It's just a broken toe!"
Mikkel says nothing. He just opens and closes the scissor while still holding that stare.
Emil's toe seems to pulse in pain, and he starts sweating. He turns to Sigrun, trying to hold the panic that's building inside him. "Sigrun! Please! Tell him this is not necessary! It's just broken! It will recover in time!"
However Sigrun also remains silent. She simply reaches into a pocket, retrieving a roll of bandage. She gives it to Mikkel, and then she puts a hand over Emil's already trembling shoulder. "Let's do it Mikkel. We have to move on." She turns her face to the other side, so Emil can't see her.
Emil's eyes bulge as Mikkel comes closer, still dead serious. "Try not to move, Emil. It will be over in a moment."
"No! Stop! Sigrun! Lalli!" Emil says, but Lalli is somewhere else, and Sigrun is looking at the other way. Her shoulders are moving up and down, and Emil imagines that she's sobbing silently. He musters all his courage, takes a deep breath and says to Mikkel. "Right! Do what you have to do." And then he closes his eyes, expecting a sharper pain in his toe.
Emil hears the scissor cutting tissue, but feels nothing. Then Mikkel's large fingers are touching his toe, moving fast for what seems to be forever, but the peak of pain never comes.
"Done!" Mikkel says, and Emil opens his eyes to find the toe carefully bandaged together with the others.
Mikkel is smiling the most mischievous smile he ever saw, and Sigrun is laughing out of control, her shoulders moving up and down. "Ha ha ha ha... You should see your face!!! Ha ha ha ha!"
"It seems the stories people told in Bornhold about the swedes' lack of courage weren't true." Mikkel says as he taps Emil on the leg... and winks.
