Dmeck, your story was good :) I only got time to read it now.

I have never had MREs, I guess lucky me :)

Thank you,  They do sell MRE's on line, but real food is better.  I read they have been improving over the years.

And yes, Róisín is quite something, isn't she! We actually have a Róisín appreciation thread somewhere!

That's cool!!

I love all of the prompts so far.  They are fun to read and make a quick diversion.  Thank you for your story also.

Fate gives all of us three teachers, three friends, three enemies, and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them, or fought them.

BTW, from now on the day to set the prompt should be Monday, after the epilogue page appears, do you agree?

When the epilogue ends and we are stranded with no pages at all, Friday is probably better, as more people are likely to have time on the weekend. But while we have the pages, let's build on them!

What about this week? Will we have a Friday prompt about scarves/gambling/autumn/etc, and then another Monday one, or do we wait until Monday?
Also, it might be good to start encouraging people to post non-ssss stuff. I might post some of my stupid watercolors, if they match a prompt.

Also... I really enjoyed the ficlet. Yes, that was a major Eww moment, and yes, one could easily read all of Lalli's staring as interest. (I wrote something about it, even, but never posted.)

Works for me.  It even may give us inspiration for a prompt

I think we have the prompt now and it’s Eww, and the next one on Monday? But of course, if someone wants to write about scarves too, such a story is very welcome!

Says the person who has been most scarce these last few weeks** :
How about 'Can You Dig It'?
Spoiler: show
(possible variants: digging yourself in deeper, dugout (canoe, trench, baseball?), "digging for gold" in the sophomoric idiom)

Now I need to go back and read through threads, sorry.

Oof, I could not get inspired by digging. Instead, have a silly double-drabble about the start of Emil's rude awakening in the Cleansers:

***

“Running five kilometers should be easy,” Emil proclaimed. “My tutor told me about this man from… from Matterhorn, a foreign place, who ran at least twice as far, to warn his friends about… three hundred attacking giants. My tutor said the key to running is pacing yourself.”

To his intense displeasure, none of the other recruits seemed to be listening to his scholarly insights. Some continued to chat among themselves, while others seemed to be posing in weird ways, stretching out one limb after another.

“All right, you ugly lot!” the drill sergeant shouted. “Let’s see what you’re made of!”

***

It was only after fifteen minutes – or was it fifteen years? – of running that Emil remembered the man from Matterhorn had died of running. The realization was not unwelcome. Trapped as he was in an endless nightmare of burning lungs, screaming leg-muscles, and the excruciating shame of being so, so far behind all the peasants, Emil longed for the sweet release of death.

It was not to be. He reached the endpoint last, ridiculously red-faced and sweaty, but alive.

“Pacing yourself, eh, Västerström?” someone asked.

So, at least one person had listened to him. That was… something.

Emil felt cheered.

I already had a poem on Digging from a recent prompt of the local library writers group. Thought it might amuse.

VERS LIBRE POEM: ‘DIGGING’

‘Digging’, you prompt.
Am I digging in the garden?
Digging my grave, perhaps, with my knife and fork?
Digging myself in deeper? But into what?
Some trench, defensive revetment or fortification?
Or simply deeper into trouble with my tongue?

Perhaps some other meaning is implied?
I may be just appreciating something?
A skilful jazz performance, a handsome youth,
The wit and wisdom of some clever one?
Or even that I grok a point of view?

I may pursue a scandal, dig for dirt
Or excavate in journalistic wise
The filthy sewers of crime or politics?
If there is any difference to be found?

I think, though, I prefer to turn the soil.
Dig dirt to build a garden full of food
Or tapestried with flowers. Let’s do that!

Let us displace the worms and roots and soil!
Dig holes to make some space for things to grow!

Let us go out and plant some apple trees!

Róisín, Love the word play on the poem

tehta, I think Emil's work did bite him back (chuckle)

tehta, that's awesome!  Perfect Emil misunderstanding.

And Róisín, that's what I'm talking about!  So many usages for 'digging' in English, this is a delightful poem.

Róisín, that fits the prompt amazingly!

So, does anyone have a new prompt for us? I am feeling a bit like Emil, myself. Too bleary to come up with stuff, and also selfish so I would just pick something that matches a story I am already writing...

"Lumilintu"? IIUC it has the same connotation as its literal translation "snowbird" in AmE ...

(Feel free to ignore me, though; I'll be traveling the rest of the week plus, and might well not even get to witness the chaos I sowed.)
