We investigated a burnt smell in our offices a while back. It turned out that one cow-orker - part of the search party, actually - had simply let his cigarette butt drop straight down at the end of his smoking break in front of the building, and he had been carrying it around smoldering and nestled in one of his (plastic-y) shoelaces' loops all the time.
