SSSS Character Smackdown Round 1f - All in the Family

Mia Västerström - seen as an angelic young cutie with a blonde pageboy haircut, escaping with her family in Y0 to their summer cabin to hide out from the pandemic, then having to hunker down there for the winter and beyond.  Somewhere along the line she and her progeny (she gave birth to two boys when into her 60s?) became very wealthy and privileged.


Kaino Hotakainen - escaped the pandemic with her siblings and their partners on a boat, but canon has never recorded with became of her after that, other than an uncredited picture in the Icelandic archives of the whole family bundled into one bunk.  We don't know who took that photo, and many fan theories about her fate exist.

I must admit that fan stories have turned me against Mia, but I can’t shake the feeling she wasn’t a loving mother. Or maybe she was. In any case there is something shady with the ages like our esteemed Questor points out.

Both of these women (Mia will become a woman!) are sources of mystery, what actually happened to them? Are the family trees complete? Is there something here we haven’t been told? Hmm? Hmm?!

I've always wondered about Kaino's fate myself, it's possible that she simply chose to not have marry or have children, but a lot of other things could've happened to her after the Old World fell...

Never noticed Mia had kids that late into her life- maybe she adopted? Quite strange.

Theories abound concerning Mia’s age, but it could be merely an accounting error. Despite the fact that Mia is a decade or so  older than Ensi, they could have grandsons of an age, if only just. But Torbjörn’s age is given as 38 in Y90, so he was born in 52. As Mia is at least seven-ish years old in Y0, this is quite the feat in the circumstances.

I think the theories presented include at least having someone purposefully removed from the family tree (because of? A scandal? A falling out?) or that Torolf is actually Mia’s son and Torbjörn is Torolf’s. Might be another one where the fans read tons on something that was actually simple oversight by the author I don’t think Mia adopted, or at least not from outside of the family, because Emil as well as the terrible trio have strong family resemblance.

As for Kaino, her offspring wouldn’t necessarily be on the family tree. Minna has actually confirmed that she didn’t mean it to be 100% comprehensive, so the generations before our team may have offspring not listed. Possibilities everywhere!

I know that  lwise, one of the fan writers, did some good stories in which Torbjorn is not Emil’s uncle but his older half brother, with a tragic backstory and a very complicated family tree. Worth reading.

There is a headcanon held by many (including me) that Kaino is gay, specifically a 'lipstick lesbian'.  A pandemic can make it easier or harder to find community, dependent on whether people are looking for someone to blame.  Sadly, they usually are.
