Yeah, Carcassonne is great! Also you may need a big table, especially if one of you is fixated on road building
A great newer game that I think has some similarities with Carcassonne is Terraforming Mars. It is a lot more complicated and you play with cards and a a board and collect resources as well as final points, there are nested rounds etc so rules-wise it’s not similar at all, but you build your thing, what you do may benefit yourself or in the end someone else (as well as everyone - you are literally bettering your world together) and you compete but do not fight. It’s great!
