Title: Eurovision Song contest
Post by: snotra on May 08, 2015, 05:06:30 PM
Considering that in two weeks the Eurovision song contest will be taking place, do any of you have a special appreciation/depreciation for the whole contest and the songs entered?
Naturally, I'm wondering how the eurovision will be remembered in Y90, but that's a different discussion altogether.

I for one have a rather special place in my heart for the 2013 entry of Romania. That dubstep vampire is going to linger in my mind for a while.

While Romania 2013 was great, Germany 1979 (Dschinghis Khan) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_ZKxA25nk8) and Ukraine 2007 (Lasha Tumbai) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfjHJneVonE) is the essence of Eurovision (although I don't watch it).

Well...

Honestly lordis Hard rock hallelujah (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAh9NRGNhUU) is one of things that just keeps me amazed.
A heavymetal band in eurovision? Alright i guess it's possible with Finland having the most rock/metal bands per capita and all, but whats this? They actually won Eurovision?
The contest most famously known for its pop songs and bands like ABBA and stuff? So yeah i remember it oddly fondly because it actually managed to beat everyone else.

Now though... ehh it's not the worst thing ever, but the part the songs named after is just so gringy for me at least while the rest is pritty good to decent.

Wait a second... Frederik here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75gCMFxCzE8) essentially made the exact same thing, but only in finnish. I never actually knew that there was an english version in existance. I guess he was out of ideas or something.

Hej,

This year I really like Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, and of course, Serbia.

Of previous years I know only songs from 2012 and 2014, and among those, I like a lot of songs, but my favourites are "Children of The Universe" from the UK last year and "Crno i belo" from Macedonia and "När jag blundar" from Finland in 2012.

Can't wait to hear how this year's contestants perform!

You mean a German version presumably? I'm not surprised there are Finnish versions, there are hundreds of covers of that song.

Also, that guy looks like David Hasselhoff

Yeap he essentially is/was the buff "lady killer" who has left an unremovable mark to the finnish karaoke scene. My brother even heard people sing his songs in a bar in canary isles in a  local Finnish bar.

I'm going to be the one with all the embarrassing favourites am I not? I... I have no excuses but the first song Iceland ever sent to Eurovision, Gleðibankinn (https://youtu.be/yliSZDpIx0g), has a soft spot in my heart.

...and also Eldgos, that never even made it to the Eurovision but in my opinion it should have. Awkward faux-heavy rock(?) attempt - check. Windmachine - check. A lady pretending to be an erupting volcano - check. It's such a tight roll of second hand embarrassment and sheer hysterics that with a few more sequins and miniskirts it would have been perfect... behold!

Spoiler: show

As I'm currently opening up more and more videos on this topic, I'm wondering whether the UK will ever send in anything decent again. After they dusted off Bonny Tyler a few years ago and a profound lack of attention paid to the current submission, I'm wondering whether or not they're going to send in Steeleye Span in a few years time.

I had a similar conversation for France some days ago. We ended by the supposition they always do sabotage to avoid the winner's organization of Eurovision next year. Or people who choose have... special taste in music ?

Almost forgot to mention Alcohol is Free (https://youtu.be/G3k2MOJOkKg) as another favourite...

It's nearly ESC time ALREADY? I don't know whether to be excited because Eurovision, or panicked because the year is going by so fast! O___O

Usually I love Eurovision, but this year............. this YeAR we somehow have been allowed to submit an entry?!?! Is this terrible feeling what the competing countries feel every year?!?!? XD oh dear.. Oh no...
It's like hanging out at the karaoke bar, just watching, and then suddenly "Come on get up! It's YOUR TURN! 8D"... "Nooooooo!" *music starts*

I saw the title of this and squeed. I have followed Eurovision for a few years now, and I love the diversity of the songs. I haven't listened to all the songs yet, but I plan on it.

If we have the time, my family usually watches the ESC and we grade every performance/song.
Last year, our winner was Malta, and the Netherlands were second - the latter song still gets played on the radio sometimes.
I really loved the winner from the first ESC I was allowed to watch and I even bought the CD from that song:

I've been watching ESC since 2010 and oh man I love it.

This year...unpopular opinion (based on youtube at least) that Cyprus' is very pretty and Sweden's is unoriginal. Also, Malta's Warrior is better. *holds a pillow in front of me just in case*

Sweden's is unoriginal.

Nothing new here from what I've heard. The Swedish ESC mentality was allegedly that if it worked with ABBA it should technically work again every time.

It seems to work though, Sweden's right up there among the Big Names with their five victories. They're also holding second place in most votes ever given to a single performance... I try to not think of which song tops that list or I'll have the tii-tilulii-ti-tii-tilulilulilu ringing in my head for the rest of the day.

Aw sh- now I did it. >:(

First semi-final is over now.
Pretty sad that Denmark and the Netherlands won't be moving on, so now Belgium and/or Russia are going to be the countries I'm rooting for.

I'm pretty sure I heard an extra syllable in there, but sometime later, I'll watch the clip and listen more carefully. Someone on twitter heard it too. If that did really happen...I'm kind of hoping it was a joke based on the two country names always getting mixed up lol.

Editing my comment: I rewatched the end of her performance and she did say Australia, but then I realized it was a special shout out to them. I was expecting the usual "Thank you Europe! Thank you [HOST COUNTRY]" so it threw me off, haha. My bad for thinking it might have been an accident.

I can't help but wonder how well-known the "originally second place" business is internationally, and how much that may have swayed the public votes.

I managed to fall asleep during the point distribution, which is kinda funny for one who has gone to sleep practically 2AM almost every day for months now, ha ha...

My favourites were Latvia, Georgia and Serbia, but Germany and England were fun, too. Those neon dresses were absolutely fabulous.

Special mention to Austria for the piano thing. The Norwegian commentator introduced them as "a fiery performance", but me and my friends sat there like "this isn't fiery at all, where's the fire? we were promised FIERY"
*piano catches fire*
"ah, there we go."

I wanted to just take a look at the contest and somehow ended up on watching the whole thing. Oops.
My favorites were UK (because c'mon, Eurovision rainbow spirit!) and Austria (because piano fire thing, I admit). I also really enjoyed Latvia's performance.
Most of the songs were so unoriginal and boring though? What's with the ballads (I'm especially not happy with Poland, we have so many good bands?? Why so sad), where's the glitter?
And I wonder what's with these votes and how much they are changed. Well, whatever. (or did everyone really vote for Russia so they have to host the most rainbow-y European event next year? P: )
Also:our announcer was the worst, with terrible English and manners...such shame, wow.

Ah, okay, I didn't think about that anymore. Although I doubt that Germany's chances would have been any better with him.
I agree, the UK song was also fun and the lights show was what I am expecting for Eurovision. ;)

I was at the First Semifinal Jury Rehearsal today! : D

Needless to say, I was pretty impressed - I found last year really blah, but there are so many songs this year that I like. Including a few that are better on stage than in the production video, I think.

I don't want to spoil it too much, so I'll just say that Russia has a really good act, and I loved Cyprus, and the audience seemed really taken with Austria (well, I suppose I can't blame them, the singer is very cute and enthusiastic).

And yeah, we'll be watching tomorrow, too. But, er, on television. Yes.< 3

I've actually never watched this, though I know people who do. Yuuago, I watched that first vid you put up, the Romanian vampire singer, and was just - totally gobsmacked? The dancers were amazing, truly amazing. The singer was strange. I didn't think castrati existed anymore, and his five-o'clock shadow really suggested that he wasn't one, but that vocal range! One wonders if he trained in opera.

AH If that's the video I'm thinking of, Romania's entry from a few years ago, then yeah - Cezar is indeed an opera singer, and he sings countertenor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countertenor) which explains the range. The first time I heard opera acts for Eurovision I was a little bit weirded out, but it grew on me pretty fast. : D

Speaking of dancing - some of the acts I saw last night had some really awesome dancing included in it, it was SO cool to see it in person. *_* And the interval act (or whatever it's called) had some really impressive stuff too.

Yeah I heard about that, it really sucks, especially since they were only told they could not compete like two weeks before the competition. That is very uncool.

Second semifinal is tonight!

At the jury rehearsal last night, there were some technical issues with Georgia's act, so they were allowed to go twice. Since I hated their song, I really hope the same thing does not happen tonight.

There are some that I wouldn't have minded listening to twice, though. < 3 (Israel, Belarus, Australia...!!)

Moe !!

I have been skipping Eurovision this year, i just listened through the list beforehand. I have to say, that there seems to be very little variations this year. Songs are basicly good, but none of them really stands apart from others.

I usually hope, that the winner would be a new country each year. It is nice to see the show landing on to some place, which hasn´t been a host yet. :)

Nuuuuuh! ;3; I voted for Finland! It's so sad we're the only Nordic in the final. And tbh, if we weren't auto-qualified, I don't think there'd be any Nordics in the final. ;3; And I think all Nordics will vote for Australia now. That'll be interesting!

I'm also equally annoyed Georgia qualified (because now I have to endure their seizure inducing show again, and let me tell you it's 100% worse live), and that Belarus didn't. C'mon Europe, why didn't you like the naked wolf guy?? Also Norway. So sad. ;3;

I work through every stage of ESC this year and I lost my image file of whose songs I liked back when I pre-listened in, like, March, so I don't remember anything and I have no idea who I'm rooting for.

I do remember that I thought Germany might win... I don't remember their song... I could go back and listen to it again now but that feels like giving in, although I think I didn't like it very much personally?

The whole thing is a mystery!

Until I join a friend's planned rewatch stream. Whenever that happens.

I'm very delighted that only Sweden made it to the finals (and even then there was no chance that they WOULDN'T so if they weren't host this year who knows)

Broadly I'm rooting for the Balkans because I seem to recall that a few of those might have been near the tops of my favorites. Maybe. Although I have no idea which of them are still in the game. If any. Gooooo somebody!

If the reactions of the audience at the jury final are any indication, likely winners are:

Australia, Spain, Russia, maybe France.

Australia ? But... the country which win has to organize the next Eurovision ? Would they take the risk to make the next one in Australia ? ??? I mean, I'm not sure they would have a lot of persons making such a travel to support singers...

Haaa no, if Australia wins, it will be held in Europe, but organized by Australia. I can't remember where I read that, so I can't link to details, but yeah. They wouldn't make everyone go down under for this. ;p
I'm not sure which country would be the location, though. Great Britain, maybe? (Just guessing)

I think if Australia wins, they (the Australian broadcasting company) will organize the next event, but somewhere in Europe. Because yes, 80% of the countries wouldn't participate if it's in Australia.

But it still feels strange... although I love Dami Im's song, I hope for the victory of a geographically more European production...

Will Australia host the Eurovision Song Contest if they win?
In case Australia wins the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, the 2017 contest will be co-hosted by Australian broadcaster SBS and another European public broadcaster, somewhere in Europe.

My opinion about the final. Didn't watch the semi-finals, though - I was too busy.

Spoiler: show
Overall impressions: meh. Most songs are very generic and not really interesting for me. Some performers like the Azeri lady and that very Swedish looking Swede were pretty, but their songs were bad, and I wouldn't vote for them because of their looks alone.
Russia's Lazarev was OK, but because people in Europe hate Russia and Russians with a burning rage of a thousand supernovas (especially those who watch ESC), he has no chance in hell of getting anywhere near the first place. Guaranteed 12 points from Belarus, at the very least.
My favourites are Georgia's Muse-like song and that Cypriot rock band, but they won't get anything either, because it's not the genre the voters like.

P.S. Serbia and Ukraine, following the direction the wind is blowing after Conchita Wurst, brought very progressive topics to the Eurovision - Serbian song was about domestic violence, Ukrainian one was about evil Russians being evil; and both were very mediocre, because they apparently expect people to vote for them out of solidarity. I miss the times when ESC was about songs...

Hmmm the Jury results....

Spoiler: show

Jury loves Australia!

Top 5:

Australia
Ukraine
France
Malta
Russia

The only one I was "meh" about is Malta; I liked all the others. So I'm fine withthis. ;p

Going to be interesting to see what the actual results will be! (But oh gods I am TIRED, I want to go to bed. But I won't.)

The power of Evil Russians has propelled Ukraine to first place. I wonder if Russia will even participate next year, since both countries are... ahem... kinda at war with each other.

Mm, well, I would not have picked Ukraine for the winner, but it was pretty, and I loved what they did with the stage composition. So, congratulations Ukraine.

I'm happy that Australia and Russia and Bulgaria were in the top five, at least. < 3 Though I wish Spain had placed higher.

Moe !!

When Australia was in the contest for the first time, i was SO much hoping, that they would win, because THEN all the europeans would go to australia and THEN it would be all upside down and vice versa; we would have to watch the show matching their timetable. Oooo...whole europe would be messed up. :)

But then i was told, that the show would be held in europe anyway and i found that quite boring.

Yeah, it'd be kind of cool if it was held in Australia, but in that case it's likely that a lot would not be able to go due to the distance/expense.

No need to duck. Any country which can produce this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUsJi8nKsj0) has definitely earned its place in Eurovision

My favorite one so far!! But the Ukrainian rock this year should be good too, i think, at least by the preview was catching.

Also Sweden was nice (5/5 Emils!!!)
And Belarus as well
I can't really choose the third place in my top between them...

Uh, so I just found out that my dad taught Welsh to the singer representing the UK and just....... wow? I had no idea. My parents contacted me to ask if I was available to talk because they had something important to tell me, and it turns out they wanted to make sure I knew before Eurovision because they know how much me and my friends love it and how much of a kick we'd get out of the information. We even found pictures! I'm more hyped for this than I've been for any UK act ever!!!!!! Also I'll be waking up at 4am to watch live. Timezones aren't gonna stop me!!!!!

Current thoughts:
Belarus - yay for my homeland. Their only advantage here is being more notable than the rest. Not many chances of getting anywhere above 10th place, IMHO.
Italy - the most likely winner, but the song is rather generic and forgettable.
Belgium - the worst vocals I've ever heard on Eurovision.
Portugal - some say he's the best of all contestants this year, but I'm not one of them.
Australia, Bulgaria, France - the singers are pretty, but their songs are meh. Bulgaria stands out by being generic pop stuff from the radio, but that guy is only better because the rest are bad.
Ukraine - relatively good compared to others, but the vocals are bad. The song is awful on its own.
The show's hosts - for heaven's sake, they are so annoying. What were the organizers thinking? Everyone on the Internet is making fun of them, apparently.
The rest: I've forgotten them already! What an underwhelming Eurovision.

There must be a very interesting backstory to that one... I'm dumbfounded. Why? Why banana? Why wolf? Why yellow? (Other than banana; see Q. 2) What's with the spaceman? We don't get a lot of exposure to the Eurovision Song Contest here in Canada, but most of my encounters with it have been similarly bewildering!  :'D

Well then let´s change that. I know it´s started by now, but in case anyone wants to join in?

My mom and I actually watched the semi-finals this year and noticed a few motives that kept popping up in the different entries.
So we made a Bingo-card out of them. (Plus some of the things that are always a classic at ESC).
Not supposed to be any sort of bad faith, just to have fun. :)

Bonuspoints if you get a Bingo on a single entry.
