I recently re-found a band I used to listen to a lot years ago, so obviously I have to share some favourites. They take a LOT of influence from traditional Finnish music, to a point where I could almost count them as just... continuing the tradition. Almost.

So I know you showed me this band a few weeks ago, and I've been listening to them quite a bit. And you see now I have a problem because I end up just playing this one song over and over and over. I've been doing it all evening. And I can't seem to stop. I need to sleep. But I also need to keep listening to the song. I'm sitting here in the dark, going one more time, no one more time, no just one more. I can't stop. I need help. It's all your fault. Does anyone know of a finnish music addicts anonymous group? I mean, I'm probably past that sort of help, but it might be worth a try. *hits repeat again*

Which Varttina song is it?  I'm just trying to find out which song to avoid....
"The music of what happens," said great Fionn, "that is the finest music in the world."

Definitely not the last one on there. Nope. That one is perfectly safe.

This one is also perfectly safe. I promise

As we were just talking about this one I'm quite sure she means Kokko. :D A quick translation in the spoiler cut (although this song is really difficult to translate so apologies if I get something wrong; I even looked at the "official translations" on Värttinä page but... those weren't translations of the songs at all, rather just English lyrics for them that didn't even say the same things).

Spoiler: show
Kokko/The Eagle

Tuulen kuulin tulevaksi
Meren suurilta selkyiltä
Mutta tuuli toista tuopi
Meren aaltonen ajavi

I heard the wind arriving
From the vast open sea
But the wind is bringing someone
The wave of the sea carries them along

Tuli kokko niin kohotti
Kaikki aijalle asetti
Tuli haukka niin hajotti
Koivikoistaan korotti

The Eagle came and rose up
Placed everything on a fence
The Hawk came and threw things apart
High atop his birch grove

Lensi lintu liikkuvainen
Latvahan lahopetäjän
Muuttui kangas kallioksi
Kovaksi ilma kohosi

A lively bird flew
To the top of an old dead pine
The pine forest turned to cliffs
The air/weather rose and turned harsh

Lensi kokko halki korven
Puhas pulmunen mereltä
Liikutteli linnun mieltä
Meijän marjan maanitteli

The Eagle flew across the forest
The pure bird from the sea
Moved the feelings of the bird (this one refers to the "lively bird")
Persuaded our dearest

Miun vaan liiti lentämään
Muuta maata matkomaan
Miun vaan heitti tälle puolel
Tälle puolel pohjatuulta

He made me fly
Travel other lands
He threw me on this side
On this side of north wind

Kyllä tuuli toista tuopi
Meren aaltonen ajavi
Jos huolin tämän huolen
Tämän murheen murennan

The wind will bring another
The wave of the sea will carry along
If I accept this sorrow/If I mourn through my sorrow
I will crush this sadness

Kuka tiesi, kenpä luuli
Männä vuonna näil ajoilla?

Who would have known, who would have guessed
This time last year?

I swear I'm not intending to dump Sleeping At Last's entire discography in this thread... but here's another one that I just can't stop listening to. Venus. So pretty... *_*
It reminds me of one of my favourite ships from another series.

Mannn, Walk Off the Earth's cover of "Somebody I Used to Know" is SO GOOD. Yeah, I'm still not sick of this overplayed song, haa. Though it helps that this version has some other neat things going for it. (5 people playing one guitar at the same time? Never would have imagined it.)

I may or may not be watching all of Walk off the Earth's videos now instead of doing what I'm supposed to be doing.
