oh hey the nordic cosplay championship is in a few hours and it will be possible to watch here i think??

I rewound the cosplay livestream and am watching it from the beginning (grateful I can fast-forward, tbh).

I'm curious -- why are the announcers speaking English?  Isn't the event in Sweden, and the participants all from the Nordic countries?  And aren't most of the Scandinavian languages mutually intelligible?  (Except Finnish, of course... and insert obligatory Danish-mumble joke.)

I'm personally grateful they're speaking my language, but I wonder if this is English imperialism in action...  :-[

I think it's probably because neither Icelandic nor Finnish is mutually intelligible with the others, and most people there speak English.

well if there are people from finland and iceland as well as norway, denmark and sweden, of course english is the best choice. in addition to possible guests from other countries! as far as I'm aware this event is quite huge, and there have been a lot of foreign guests even at small cons such as my local Torucon~
(actually, last torucon, there was an english professor holding a presentation on books & knowledge in a postapocalyptic setting. it was great. fastforward to me reading SSSS...)

ok the winners of the competition really deserved it
even if it wasn't laufey

(laufey still wins in my heart)

edit: also I realized why the first norwegian cosplayer seemed so familiar. he won the cosplay competition at torucon last year. TRONDHEIM REPRESENT
(the judge Martine Tufte, too, seems familair... I think my fb has suggested them as a friend several times because of all the mutuals hahaha)

AAAAAaaaaa I saw Laufey!  What an awesome presentation!  I loved the "Tangled" crossover.
BTW, Laufey, was that you actually singing in the voiceover?  And did you have to win a cosplay contest at the Iceland level in order to come to Närcon?

Will you do a post-con writeup for all of us (once you've gotten back home to Iceland)?  I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love more details.

ALSO, once the dust settles, is everyone OK with moving this topic into the Cosplay thread?  I'd like to be findable by future readers -- if you don't mind, Laufey.

And I was too busy pouting to pay attention

I'd like to think she and the 3rd place got bonus points for being Swedish, but the jury was clearly unbiased nationality-wise so that's not it. I guess I'm mostly surprised because I didn't see her, and definitely not the third-placer, as relevant competition.

Don't worry about it Laufey, you won first price in our hearts!
