Good grief, how did I miss -- oh, wait. It's not equinox here till tomorrow. But it's tomorrow where you are, isn't it?

Happy equinox!

Today in Mount Pleasant the temperature hit just over 41C. It is now 2200 in the evening, and the temperature is still in the mid 20s. Not good. At least the fires nearest us are now out or controlled, so a bit safer. There are some ominous clouds and the termites are swarming. Let’s just hope that we get some rain rather than a dry lightning storm. I’m busy doing prep for tomorrow’s market, so I hope the weather cools down a bit for that.

Yeah, the weather's getting awfully hot awfully early. Today was real nice at 25C max, but we started getting days above 30C in September, and we've already had several days over 35C. I've noticed that all the season-signifier plants are flowering earlier this year than they did last year - the christmas trees (nyutsia floribunda) are flowering already in early November and so is the jacaranda, which last year all started in late November. I also noticed that the peppermint trees started flowering in September and have already ended. It's gonna be a hot, long summer.

The Nuytsia flowering that early is pretty scary, since they often do it ahead of danger (as in ‘set seed before the tree dies’).

And I spoke too soon about the fires here - while Liz and I were doing the market this morning two fires started close enough to cause a lot of smoke in town, one just north of Mount Pleasant which was not very bad, but the one at Tungkillo, the next small town just east of  here about 8k/5 miles away was very nasty. The fire brigade has just listed it as being ‘controlled’, which means it is no longer just burning as total wildfire, but it has taken above four hours to get there with 23 fire engines and six firefighting planes dumping water on it. Worrying. This is going to be a bad summer.

There are many bad summers to come, I fear. May the Fates be with you, Róisín.

Thank you, dear. Certainly the wildlife agrees with you. So does Dusty, who is the best weather predictor I know. It is about 0430 here at present, and things are much more peaceful.

I'm sure you are well prepared but be careful Roisin. Can you find any smoke tracking apps there? We were affected here by fires a thousand miles away this year. That smoke is dangerous.

The Country Fire Service here sends out alerts for areas affected by fires, telling us where there are smoke or ember hazards, when it would be wise to evacuate, which roads are blocked and such like information. We are as prepared as we can be, but it is always scary. Thank you for thinking of us!

[thinks hard at fires: burn small and gently and politely go out when asked]

[does not expect fires to pay any attention to what thorny is thinking]

Here's hoping you can stay home and stay safe, Róisín!

I have to admit, I would have expected that kind of newsbite rather from the other side of the Gulf of Bothnia ...  ;)

I ordered a cake for thanksgiving.

This is the route it is taking:

It would have been cheaper to ship direct from NJ...

They should have put it on an oxcart going by the direct route. It might have still been fresh when it arrived.

They must have sent it express.  It came yesterday.  It was nicely packaged in this sealed stryofoam box with 2 bricks of dry ice to keep it frozen.  (The box seals tightly and is worthy of re-use)  It is nestled nicely in my refrigerator awaiting tomorrow for devouring!!

Now I need to make the cinnamon pie and the apple pie!!
