Tiger lilies! Huzzah! Also, fascinating that many of what you call tiger lilies are what here we would call day lilies. Tiger lilies here are the orange and brown spotted/streaked ones.

Tiger lilly is the popular name for this plant which has become naturalized and grows wild along roadways. I see on google that their proper name is ditch lillies which explains why we choose the other name.

Had to go into this canyon for ecological monitoring yesterday, it turned into a two day thing.

Allow me to impress on everyone that the photos do not tell the slope aspect very well. For the most part we're talking 70% slope, obnoxious amounts of  oak brush and sudden 10-30 foot cliffs that are very hidden by the brush on those slopes... and this was just a side canyon. Eventually I made it to the bottom of this one.

Some rocks I took photos of for Am.

I side hilled around the knob between it and the main canyon, and found more shelves and cliffs, so this one didn't work out very well.

And so I started back up the side of the side canyon.

My truck... is somewhere up there.

But hey, according to my map there's another side canyon that might work.

Some cactus I spied on the hike to there.

haha.... nope.

So I headed back in to the office after consulting my map. I had one more shot at maybe getting down into the main canyon from the east side.

Compared to yesterday, the east side was a cake walk. Nice 30-40 degree slopes, the oak brush was mostly only knee to waist high, and there was a magnificent elk trail. I made it down to the bottom did my survey and back up in half the time I spent just trying to puzzle my way into the main canyon yesterday.

Vile weather here. Freezing storm winds and trees down all over. Husband opted out of the fortnightly shopping trip we had planned for this evening, not feeling it safe to drive in current road conditions. Don't blame him. I have brought in plenty of firewood and plan to spend the night indoors. Hope the power doesn't go off. I can cope, but no internet, dammit.

Batten down the hatches and ride out the storm. I'm sure with your experience and lifestyle you will manage. We just passed through a heat wave with violent storms all around. Fortunately the storms missed my village.

Midwestmutt, glad you missed out on the worst of the weather! We have rescheduled the shopping run to Thursday arvo/evening, when it looks as if the weather will be less bad. We may have a window frame working its way out of the wall because of storm damage, and some iron loose on the roof, but are mostly okay - certainly not the worst weather I have ever seen!

TBH, I took all those with my phone because I had it on me for the avenza maps function.
