Sorry to abruptly begin to talk about politics again but yesterday was so effing weird I don't have the words for it. Our PM Sigmundur Davíð:
- started the day by saying he saw no need to step down and had not even considered it
- it began to look a lot like he wasn't getting the support he wanted from his own party
- so he posted a threat on his FB where he said, basically, that if he could not be the PM then he'd have the president dissolve the parliament
- he then went to the president to do just that, without negotiating this with his own party or the other MPs who for most part had no idea of his plans
- president said no and then had a surprise! press conference about it, which Sigmundur apparently hadn't thought he'd do
- so a bit later on Sigmundur claimed he never wanted to have the parliament dissolved and that the president was lying (despite having left ample evidence in his own FB post)
- after a while we got a message that he was indeed going to step down, but only from his position as PM... he'd still stay as the leader of the Progressive Party
- except NO hahaha, later on his office declared he was not stepping down after all but just taking a leave for some unspecified amount of time
Icelandic politics, man.
Meanwhile the protesting will go on for the third day and frankly no one's surprised.
