Sometimes I think we may indeed be getting beyond that - this week's developments in Korea make me hopeful.
Funny story, Look at Google maps, the view that shows the actual satellite picture. You'll see at the northwest end of the runway a bunch of what look like chevrons. Those were the places, the pads, where they parked the active SAC planes so they could just power up and they'd be at the end of the runway ready to take off. Well right above that you'll see a road coming in from an exit on the interstate. Looking to the East you'll see another road entering what was the base area. The eastern road had an official gate and a guard. You had to show you're ID and give a reason for entering the base. There was a fence all around the base. But the western entry point from the interstate had no gate, no guard, no nuthin'. Just a break in the fence and you were in and driving past the the active planes. You could tell when they were armed as there would be soldiers with guns patrolling below them. Truly high security
It was a different world, a different time.
