Oooh! Eee! Ooh ah ah! (Ting, tang, walla walla bing bang.)
Hmm... any advice for one who might start rising soon?
I would definitely read up on the different flights beforehand to decide which one you want to be in. I did not do this and chose largely uninformed. But I got lucky and absolutely love the flight I chose. My sister was completely right that I'd love Arcane. (Though according to MBTI, I'd fit really well in Nature)
Here's a useful link. Some of the images don't work, but it's still helpful:

Some people have said they didn't know this at the beginning, so they chose random colors, thinking they'll get to make another one. You get to choose between four starter breeds and the primary (body) and secondary (wing) colors. Tertiary is randomly generated and only shows up when the gene is something other than basic. You start off with all basic (like...flat) colors, but then you can buy genes. And/or buy dragons with the genes you want and breed them. Oh yeah, and don't exalt your starters (you get the one custom and one random) because you don't get any treasure for them.) And if you don't like your random starter (progen) you can buy breed change scrolls.
And I'll have a newbie gift package waiting
