It was supposed to be shading, but soot or blood would fit as well I suppose, what with Emil being Emil..

I think Emil getting his hair dirty might mean that instead of him freaking out and running away from the troll, he will completely destroy it in a murderous rage because it dared to ruin his pride and joy... But I agree, blood on his face does make a very aesthetic image, and would probably make a great movie poster or something x) And thank you!
