It's addictive. I'm working on Swedish. 50+ words in less than two days.

English, because that's the only one that is available in the Italian version. The speed at which she cleared the levels is scary, but she has had experience with the language before. Meanwhile, dad started learning German, and I, in my boredom and will to challenge everyone went for Chinese.

Useless to say, I am giving up and continuing with Japanese, because it makes much more sense to me.

Duolingo just gave me the incredibly useful phrase, "Los martes como queso."

No, I'm pretty sure I'll eat cheese any day of the week...

Lol, I think it's incredibly funny that duolingo has me learning all kinds of random things. Let me tell you about how this turtle drinks water. Wait, um I can't ask for your name or how you're doing. . .

Sköldpadden dricker vatten. The turtle drinks water. So useful. Lol.

Amusingly, I see that most of us on Duolingo have at least tried Swedish. I imagine that once Norwegian is available, a lot of us will give that a go, too. I don't see as many people trying Danish though. Any thoughts as to why?

I originally wanted to do Norwegian, but as that wasn't available, I tried Swedish because I thought it was more closely related and because I was planning a short trip to Sweden. I don't know if I am going to continue the course - at the moment, I'm focusing more on my romance languages.

Ufo does Danish :) She will be the one of us, to imitate Mikkel best XD

But same reason as fen_shen, I started swedish because of norwegian, and I think if that is ready, I will try it for fun. Since I am reading newspaper articles and watching TV-shows in norwegian now, I think I will just go on with swedish there until I reached a level beyond listening and understanding simple radio broadcasts.

I'm AuthorOfLight on Duolingo (For Spanish) and Memrise (For Spanish and Finnish) and Bethany M. on Livemocha for Finnish. Anyone who wants to add me on any of those sites, feel free to!

ETA: I went through the entire thread and added everyone on Duolingo who posted their username. Hope no one minds.

OK so this fandom has inspired me to try learning new languages. I have a fairly unimpressing lingiustic history:

Native: Norwegian :norway:
Second: English :usa:
- Should mention that unlike most of all the norwegian peeps my age, I did not start learning english  my first year in school. I had my first proper english lesson in my fifth year, when I was 10/11 years old.
- Should also mention that while I speak american english, I want to learn how to speak(and write) all kinds of english accents, and have therefore decided to move to Australia for my 4th year in university college, as an exchange student.
Supposedly third: German :germany:
- I learned this language for five years in school, and I was told that I did pretty good; I traveled a lot between Norway and Germany throughout these five years, mainly in association with a program called "German-Norwegian Youth Forum" (Tysk-Norsk Ungdomsforum/Deutch-Norwegish Jugend Forum) - I could also mention that it's been three years since I last studied german, but I have plans to study it once more so that I can become a german teacher in norwegian schools. However I fear I might have forgotten EVERYTHINGGGGG.
Understands, but cannot speak: Swedish :sweden: and Danish :denmark:
- I can understand almost everything these crazy peeps say and write to me.
- I can NOT speak their language, however, because it sounds too much like norwegian and I mix them up and it sounds terrible and also they mostly seem to understand me so I haven't really felt the urge to speak their language properly. Also my grandmother is a dane and she speaks neither danish nor norwegian, just a crazy mix, and I don't want to end up soundling like her because I have laughed at her so many times oh gosh poor grandma! [WILDFIRE: Not a very good granddaughter?]

So, yesterday I signed up for Memrise to learn icelandic :iceland:, and today I signed up for Duolingo so that I can learn - something(I chose swedish :sweden: but I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to doing anything with it) and Livemocha for finnish :finland:, a language I have ALWAYS wanted to learn mainly because I looooooved the Moomin show when I was little.

Oh god those faces, they represent so much of my childhood <3

Edit:
Also I was planning on telling you that if any of you want to add me at either site, my name is "kaketryne" for both Memrise and Duoling. At Livemocha I am Ida Katrine B.

How is Livemocha? I hadn't heard of that one before.

I'm on Memrise for Finnish as 'starfallz' if anyone wants to follow me. I am pretty terrible at keeping up with it though.

(...)

I haven't tried it yes since I figured I should end my Icelandic course in Memrise before I started my Finnish course. I don't understand it quite yet, but I haven't put much effort in actually trying to understand it.
