You bring up a good point.  But the intro threads have slightly different purposes, which is why I think we could justify them both.  The *Language Board* intros are for people to introduce themselves in all the languages they speak (or are learning).  Those seem pretty popular despite the ongoing use of the plain-vanilla Introduction thread. 

Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

You could just re-name the Language board one, maybe something like... "Multi-lingual introduction thread!"

But the smiley itself is cute and important... I like its expression very much. Would it be possible to change the code that belongs to the smiley so that long rows of ?? become possible, but the icon itself can still be used somehow?

It is, but, like my other attempts at editing smileys, the host refuses to allow me. 
I'll talk with Hush and see where we are on moving to the new server, cause once we're there, I can change it in a jiffy.
