Improvements
« on: September 01, 2014, 06:57:41 PM »
Suggest anything that might need improving or snazzing up of any kind.  Different from bugs and fixes in that these aren't urgent.

Here is what different staff groups can and can't do:

What a skald can do:
* Split threads into new topics
* Name new threads resulting from thread-splitting
* Edit any calendar event
* Merge threads
* Move threads to different boards.

What a skald can't do:
* Change or delete anyone's individual post
* Delete, lock, or unlock threads
* Sticky threads
* Add holidays to the calendar
* See or deal with anyone's PMs
* Ban/delete users
* Do major technical fixes

What a moderator can do:
* Everything a skald can do
* Lock/unlock topics
* Sticky topics
* Delete posts
* Ban/delete users
* Issue warnings to users

What a moderator can't do:
* (Anything technical)
* Add holidays to the calendar
* Add those little country flags (or any kind of imagery)
* Work with bugs/downtime/whatever
* Change the news up there
* See or deal with anyone's PMs

What an admin can do:
* Everything a mod can do
* Create new boards
* Make things visible/invisible to guests
* Add flags/smileys
* Change the news up there
* Change your login username (not the display name, you can change this on your own in your profile)
* Technical things
* Add/remove holidays to the calendar
* Edit forum site code
* Database stuff

What an admin can't do:
* This mostly depends on the admin and what their coding abilities, etc. are

Alright, so:  You've probably all noticed the "Newbie" labels near you avatars and names by now.  This is the lowest rank of a system that ranks users by their number of posts.  The current ranks are "Newbie," "Jr. Member," "Full Member," "Sr. Member," and "Hero Member."  I want to change these labels to reflect the themes of SSSS, so what do y'all think I should rename these ranks as?  Cleanser?  Mage?  Captain?  Scout?  Grade C Cat?  Citizen?
Come up with some lists so we can make this place a little more unique!

If anyone will ever get banned I request they are marked as "infected" or.. hehe, troll.

But of course.  :)
Although I think, once they're banned, their posts are simply removed altogether.

Oh... some forums have them, but in the way that their name is crossed over and it says banned below that.
Of course ideally we shouldn't need to find out what happens......

Doubt it! It would make a nonsense of every thread they have ever posted in. No forum does that by default, that I know of.

There are add-ons for various forums which enable mods to remove every post in the case of, for instance, spambots, but it's unwise to do that in the case of previously well-behaved forum members who have become infected!

Here are some ideas for forum ranks.:
In Quarantine
Out of Quarantine
Serf
Scald
Scout
Cleanser
Grade C Derp-Cat
Grade B Farm-Cat
Grade A Lord-Cat
My one-and-only: :uk:

Eh, that's how it was on my old SMF forum.  You're probably right about it being an add on.  It did destroy a lot of conversations, and it always confused me a bit.

"Serf/Plebian"  has certainly made it's way onto my watch list.  :D

Great rank names!
My suggestion is to replace "Serf" with "Peasant." We know the SSSS world uses the latter term. And the implication that, 90 years down the road, some people are in a permanent semi-slave status (cf. serfs in old Russia), makes me uncomfortable.  Although if that's what Our Author intends, I won't protest...

I didn't realize that was what serf meant.  Peasant it is, for now, though I'm waiting for the entire list to be finished before I implement it.

Also, would "Captain" fit?  It is a military rank, after all.

I was thinking about using that one... Maybe "Troll-Slayer," or something like that, could be the highest rank if one of the characters gets a moniker of some kind.  Actually, that's a good one for moderators...

I have a few ideas...

What if all of the titles were named after different trolls? It could be Hippo-Shrimp then Spider-Snake. More trolls could be added to the list with the ones causing the most destruction being the harder to achieve.

The same could be done with cool technology such as the Death-Train and the Cruise Ship for trees.

But, if naming titles after trolls and trains isn't your style, I definitely vote for the cat idea.

The already-suggested list is not a bad idea, but here's mine anyways

Newbie: Grade C Derp Cat

Jr. Member: Skald

Full member: Cleanser

Senior member: Mage

Hero member: Grade A Expeditionary Kitty

Moderator: Cleanser/Forum Thor

I love the suggestion of having banned people listed as infected or trolls.

Is there a way of giving custom titles based on activity? For example, one who writes a lot of poetry could be known as a skald, one who discusses the world and the story a lot becomes Tuuri, whoever has a cat avatar is an Expeditionary Kitty, etcetera.

Also, if we were to consider the nationalities page and write them in order of how much Iceland likes them...

Newbie: Primitive Finn

Jr. Member: Naïve Dane

Full member: Messy Swede

Sr. Member: Brave Norwegian

Hero Member: something with Iceland... I can't come up with anything, truth be told
Fluent: :italy:, :albania:, :usa:

Okay: :spain:

Learning: :germany: :norway: :japan:

Bloody messed-up spoils of a language: :france:

The Icelanders and Norwegians will appreciate that kind of ranking. The Swedes and Danes might question it though.

What about the Finns? :P

You're right, The Many Different Nationalities of the World put Danes above Swedes. How about:

Jr. Member: Messy Swede
Full Member: Knowing Dane

Fluent: :italy:, :albania:, :usa:

Okay: :spain:

I don't know.. let's not try to rank nationalities over each other.

However, on a slightly related note: It might be nice to steal the official site's Flag Cheat Sheet, and make little flag-icons to optionally display alongside the icons for profile / mail / private message.
