Ah, thanks for the explanation!  ;D Hmm, I don't know if there is a proper, non-dialectal German word for that... I'd call it "herumsumpfen", like if you're stuck in a swamp (= Sumpf) and can't get out by yourself. Or maybe "herumlungern" or "abhängen" (which is more teenage slang). Any suggestions by other German speakers?  :)

OK, I ran the word through Google Translate, and thought that it probably would be closer than any other word I could come up with, since I had no word for it in German. : P Please, German speakers: Lehre mich die Wege des Deutsch! (and yes, that is taken directly from Translate because I wanted to be funny but I don't know how to be funny in German.. I never learned that :c)

Oh, this looks cool!

:spain: ¡Hola!

:uk: Hello! I'm Red Cloud, a native girl from Spain. Spanish is my first language but I can talk English and a little bit of Catalan.
I would love to learn more languages but with the little time I have I can't...

(Ok, I cheated twice in this but I don't know so many Words...)
I am floating away, lost in a silent ballet.

you might want to check in here: https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=177.75

and as you have found the chat already, you might someday have fun joining a german talk on skype (in return I am willing to let myself get tortured by speaking norwegian, I need more practise anyways!)

I'ld go for "abhängen" or "chillen" in youth-speak, or "faulenzen" or "herumhängen" in regular German. Or "entspannen", to put a positive spin on it.

"Herumlungern" has not yet completely lost the undertone of "waiting for an opportunity to do mischief, or even outright petty crimes" IMHO, and at least "versumpfen" is something else, usually involving alcohol.

nice explanation, JoB.
this corresponds to how I'd interpret these expressions as well. (hadn't heard herumsumpfen before, either.  ???)

another one for the collection would be (he)rumgammeln. That one sort of implies being useless and lazy.

fun fact for Scandinavian speakers and learners: vergammelt / gammelig = rotten, putrid; gammeln = to rot, the compound form is Gammel-  (now imagine the giggles going through the historic town/city centre somewhere in Norway with 2 primary school aged children...)

Hi everyone! This is my first post on the forums, but I know quite a few people here from the chat. :)

I love languages so much! I've been learning Swedish for some three and a half months now and in the meanwhile have been trying a lot of other ones (Spanish, Arabic, Dutch, French,...), but I haven't yet found one that I can devote myself to as much as I do to Swedish. I'm looking forward to talking with other SSSS and language enthusiasts here! :D

Salut!

Hooray! We can type Japanese and Korean and other fun stuff on the forum now! Which means I can try to introduce myself (even though there will be maybe a gazillion errors). :)

:usa: Hello! I'm Auleliel. I'm 28 years old. My birthday is March 31. I'm an American. Now I live in Chiba Prefecture, in Japan, and I teach English. One year ago I lived in Korea. I lived there for three years, and I taught English. At that time, I learned Korean, but I don't speak it much now. In high school I studied Spanish and German. I have many hobbies. I read books often. I like to play the viola and the piano. I'm good at crocheting. Even though I like eating Japanese food, I am very bad at cooking.

:usa: Hello! I'm Auleliel. I'm 28 years old. My birthday is March 31. I lived in Gyeongju for three years. But now I can't speak Korean, because I live in Japan.

:mexico: ¡Hola! Me llamo Auleliel. Entonces no recuerdo mucho.
:usa: Hello! I'm Auleliel. I am 28 years old and my birthday is March 31. I'm from the USA, but I live in Japan now. I've lived here for a year. I lived in Korea for three years as an English teacher. I studied Spanish for many years, and  I have a license to teach it, but I haven't spoken it for more than six years. So I don't remember much.

:germany: Guten Tag. Ich heisse Auleliel. Ich habe graue Augen. Ich habe alles vergessen.
:usa: Hello. My name is Auleliel. I have grey eyes. I have forgotten everything.

:sweden: Hej! Jag är Auleliel. Jag är en kvinna. Jag äter inte frukost. Jag talar inte svenska. Sköldpaddorna dricker vatten.
:usa: Hi! I am Auleliel. I am a woman. I don't eat breakfast. I don't speak Swedish. The turtles drink water.

:finland: Terve! Minä olen Auleliel. En puhu suomea. Mitä kuuluu? Minulle kuuluu hyvää. Mitä kello on? Kello on vartia vaille kaksitoista. Yksi, kaksi, kolme, neljä, viisi, kuusi, seitsemän, kahdeksan, yhdeksän, kymmenen...
:usa: Hello! I am Auleliel. I don't speak Finnish. How are you? I'm fine. What time is it? It's a quarter to twelve. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten...
(I could have kept going with the numbers until a thousand but that would have gotten a bit dull, maybe.)

I probably am capable of saying more things in each of these languages, but I have a hard time deciding what to say without it being in the context of a conversation. I didn't bother with an introduction in my native language since I've already done that in the general introduction thread, ages ago.

Yay, now I can do it properly, too!  :D

:uk: Hello! I'm curiosity (like the Mars rover), and I still can't believe I'm writing to the forum. Sometimes I draw silly stuff and even try to joke, but generally I'm a boring person. My mother tongue is Russian, but I speak Ukrainian well, too. I've been learning English since elementary school, and I'm still far from perfection. I've also started to learn French and German at school, but I'm really bad with these two. Want to take them up again when I have more free time.

:france: Bonjour!

Masyadong mahirap to. Kailangan ko maghinto hahaha.

:australia: Hello. I did this because it's still here. My name here on the internet is Dane and my tablet is annoying me because it's correcting my words like they're English. I'm Filipino, but I'm from Wellington, so I'm not very good at Tagalog. I'm also not good at writing in Tagalog; what I write is what I speak (there are lots of rules and words that I don't know. I use the English for what I don't know. My parents say that writing is hard because no one speaks like what they have to write.)

This is too hard. I have to stop hahaha. I paraphrased some of this as well.

:france: Bonjour!

:australia: Hello! I am Dane. That's not true. My name is only Dane if I'm in the forum. I've been learning French for about four years, but because I can't find any French people in Auckland (I live there now), I cant speak French well (if you hear me, you might die due to my French, or maybe due to your impatience because I falter too much hahaha.). I like French and every other language as well.

I don't actually know what to say.

:germany: Mein name ist Dane. Ich bin nicht ein Berliner. Das mädchen isst den brot. Das mädchen isst der brot.

:australia: My name is Dane. I am not a Berliner at heart/a jelly donut. The girl eats the bread. The bread eats the girl.

:australia: I am Dane. I am sixteen years old. I cannot speak Chinese. They are your best friends. Do you like your best friends? I have 134 books.

:australia: I am Dane. I like anime and ramen. (I TRIED I'M SORRY).

:finland: Mun nimeni on Dane. Mä en ole englantilainen. Mä en voi puhua suomea.

:australia: My name is Dane. I am not English. I cannot speak Finnish.

:norway: Jeg er Dane.

:australia: I am Dane.

:iceland: Ég er Dane.

:australia: I am Dane.

Basque: Ni Dane naiz.

:australia: I am Dane.

Kapampangan: Mangan tayo. Nasi.

:australia: Let's eat. Rice.

You know, for a wannabe polyglot, I know nothing. At the moment, I'm just focussing on the few languages I'm already waist deep in. Correct me if I have any mistakes (maybe through PM if you don't want to clutter the thread? Your choice.)

Ok, some corrections on the German:  :)
Quote
Ich bin nicht ein Berliner.
would be "Ich bin kein Berliner" (kein happens mostly when you put nicht + ein together).
Quote
Das mädchen isst den brot. Das mädchen isst der brot.
The declination isn't right. In this case, only the position of the words defines the meaning (and I guess that's what makes it a bit funny?)
"Das Mädchen isst das Brot. Das Brot isst das Mädchen."

Oh wow this is a thing that I completely missed. I guess I will put something down, although I've kinda already introduced myself to most of you.

:canada: My name's Viola, I'm from Canada. I speak English, French, and Icelandic. I'm learning Danish, and I will learn German in school. I can read Norwegian and Swedish, and I can't speak Finnish.

Ég get lesið norsku og sænsku, og ég get ekki talað finnsku.

:sweden: / :norway: If you speak/write to me in either of these languages I will understand you mostly, but I will reply with a weird mix of Danish and Icelandic :D

:germany: Ich... Deutsch. Yeah nope. I'm starting this one in September :P

:finland: Kiitos. Hyvää yötä. I don't even know how to say "I" let alone "I don't speak Finnish". I really don't speak Finnish.
