[To complete the introductions, I'm waving my hand from here as well. As I have written elswhere, I study (and work) in southern Poland, but I come from the north, nearby the Baltic Sea (well, almost, my hometown is 10 kilometers from the shore). From the list of interesting things I forgot to mention in the main Introduction Thread - I play boardgames and paper-based RPGs, and I attend fan conventions. On a daily basis I sleep to little, eat too little, and pull my life together too rarely, and I'd like to change all three of this things.
The quote in my signature comes from a poem of my favourite Polish author, Bolesław Leśmian, translation by Maria Gral taken directly from Tumblr. Leśmian's poetry is wodely considered untranslatable, but I like this version a lot.]

J'ai visité la France nombre de fois et généralement, après s'adapter un peu, je suis apte à comminucation efficace. J'utilise le français beaucoup dans mes études, parce que je m'intéresse à la littérature médiévale française (principalement les chansons de geste, et les légendes du roi Arthur (matière de Bretagne en général)) et la vie théâtrale à la cour française au XVIe et XVIIe siècle. Grâce à cela, je comprends (et apprends à parler correctement) l'ancien et le moyen français, et aussi français classique. Je traduis les chansons traditionnelles et airs de cour, même si je ne semble pas capable de faire ça sur cette introduction mal écrite.
[Good morning or good evening to everyone! I am a self-taught French user, currently fighting to gather enough time to get a proper language course. I have visited the country many times and usually after some time to adjust I am able to communicate effectively. I extensivelly use French in my studies, as I am interested in French medieval literature (mainly chansons de geste and  the Arthurian Legendarium) and French court theatre life in 16th and 17th century. Thanks to that I also comprahend and try to learn to properly speak Old, Middle and Classical French. Lord, I adore reading polish. Because I understand about every third word, but they just don't work! I mean, do you really use the "łapką" for the "hand"? And also "północy" for the north and "południu" for the south? In russian we also have these words, but they mean different (although there still is a logical connection). It's so weird and fun at the same time!  I think I need to read more polish to get used to it, because without english translation I couldn't even understand what a specific word means.

With the directions - yes! But we use these words to indicate midnight and midday as well!
And as for "łapka" or "łapa", in formal speach it's for animals' paws, but we use it about hands coloquially, don't you use лапка and лапа in the same way? In standard Polish we obviously use ręka (рука́), as all polite Slavs do

So nice to know that! :'D I think that we too use the "noon" and words-like-this-one to indicate the direction, but only in the military environment. In everyday speech I didn't meet with it at all.
Well, yes, we use лапка or лапа to refer to the hand, but usually this is done for puns or jokes (for example "Я не могу, у меня лапки / I can't do this, I have paws"). For me it's funny because I don't know the language (yet!) and I can't figure out if you're joking or that's what you mean. And it turns out even more fun!

FWIW, in French, "midi" (noon) *is* in general use as an alternative to "sud" (South). Goes to show which side of the equator those languages developed on, I guess.

Oh, yeah! Italian also uses "mezzogiorno" (midday) to mean south!
There's also the rather archaic usage of "levante" and "ponente" (rising and setting, respectively) to mean east and west. Not when giving directions, though, just when talking about geography.

Huh, in Polish it's not archaic, it's just literally how you do it. East (wschód) is where the Sun rises (wschodzi), and West (zachód) where it sets (zachodzi). Wschód and zachód  (słońca) also mean just sunrise and sunset, respectively.

Hey! English is my mother tongue but I'm learning Finnish. I currently live in Tampere but can happily report no trolls here yet. I came here a couple of months ago but I've been living in Finland nine months already (I was working on a husky farm in Lapland last winter and that's where I started learning to speak Finnish). I write like I speak Finnish so it's not particularly grammatically beautiful nor does it sound like the "book language" you're meant to use when writing, Finns do usually understand me well enough but don't imitate me too much if you're learning! I found SSSS just a few weeks ago and now I think I like it a little too much, hopefully here I'll find more friends to talk about it with! If anyone wants, I can help them with the Finnish language, as I said my Finnish isn't beautiful but I think I'm usually pretty good at explaining the "difficult" bits.

Yep! I noticed that the phrase "tuli kokko" came up in one of Lalli's runos (can't remember which, but it was early on) and immediately had the Korpi song in my head for the rest of the day, so when I was trying to think of a nice bird-relevant name to fit the Onni avatar it seemed to fit... I will go introduce myself in the proper place now!
