Today is Anzac Day, and everything is pretty solemn. I watched telecasts of the Dawn Services at Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux.

Respect for Turkiye and France, especially the former, for maintaining the memorials and cemeteries with such care.

Every year I am privileged to be a part of several Anzac Day commemorations (a brass band's busiest day), and every year I am struck by how it manages to be relevant in the here and now, and yet mostly devoid of jingoism.  There is an acute awareness of the delicate position we occupy in the world, and how forces outisde of our control could affect the young people sitting there.

Agreed. ANZAC day is quite important to my dad's side of the family as there's a lot of ex-servicemen on his side, and my community concert band plays for the march and 11am service for a country town about an hour's drive outside of our city. I'm always honoured that we get to be part of this ceremony particularly as I think the town's RSL really appreciates having an actual band come out to march and play for them. I also appreciate that ANZAC day manages to avoid a lot of jingoism, for a day of military commemoration. I think back to the original ANZACs at Gallipoli and how they fought a losing and ultimately fairly pointless battle, and we still come together to honour them. I think that's important.
