Six words at a time: continuing story

I keep wanting to string the various entries in the "six-word stories" thread together into something that would make sense. But that, of course, is not what that thread is for.

However, maybe somebody besides me wants to try that; so that's what this thread is for. For each post, the poster adds six words, building on what's come before, with the idea being to produce something at least semicoherent. I'll start:

They were all out of firewood.
