Prompt
how/when someone discovered they are a mage?
Or how they start trying to use the ability?
Fate gives all of us three teachers, three friends, three enemies, and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them, or fought them.

Maybe we could try our hands at the runo poetry form? For Americans, you may be familiar with the form from the rhyme-scheme that Longfellow used for his long narrative poem ‘Hiawatha’. It is also the form of the ‘Kalevala’. There are a number of variants, from different time periods and regions. Early in the comic when Tuuri, Lalli and Emil are getting on the train you may remember Lalli singing one to the moon? There are some interesting comments and translations on that page.

May I suggest that we take Technology or Tech level for next week, because we have talked about it a lot now and it’s very relevant to where the re-read is, as Tuuri is in awe of the Swedes. But let’s keep in mind both the becoming a mage and Runo suggestions, as they will soon become relevant in the reread as well (for example when Emil is derisive of Lalli’s mage ability, and indeed at the moon Runo)?

Ok.  Magic would still fit in a way ;)

Looks like a nice theme! Let me think about it...

BTW Clarke was surprised for his saying becoming so widely known and, IIRC, explained in one of his letters that he was quoting a friend... Anyway he admited there was nothing to be done, because everyone now called it one of Clarke's Laws...

It's been a crazy week! So I have nothing to share but a quick little vignette based on some thoughts I had during the re-read:

***

"And there's the lake." Emil gestured towards a sliver of water just visible down an empty side-street.

"Ooh." It didn't look very impressive, but Tuuri still paused to stare, rising up on her toes as if that would help her see more of the lake. "Is that where the island is? The one that requires quarantine? What's it like? Rich? Nice?"

"Not really. My family has always chosen to live outside it." In fact, Emil had only visited it once, as part of a school summer program. It had not gone well. "It's mostly just for skalds. Not the bookish ones like Uncle Torbjörn, or the medical ones like Aunt Siv. The mechanics."

"The mechanics?" Tuuri took a step towards the street.

"Yeah, the people who design and build our Swedish technology. Like defences for the trains. Or radios. Or batteries. Our batteries are the best in the world, you know." When Tuuri did not respond, but kept staring, her eyes very wide, he felt prompted to ask,"Don't you have mechanics in Finland?"

She turned towards him sharply. "Yes, of course we do! I'm one, too, actually. Well, almost. I haven't finished my big project yet "

"Oh, okay." Well, that explained the interest: it was professional. Emil could remember his own excitement when he saw his first flamethrower workshop. "You know, you could probably learn a lot by visiting that place. It's got many mechanical things. Kuggeholm, we call it."

"Cog island," Tuuri repeated, voice full of wonder. "I would love to go! But we can't, can we? We'd need to quarantine."

"We can't now. But when we're back, I can show you around personally."

"Oh, thank you so much! Have you spent much time there?"

"Yes, loads."

"What's it like?"

"Full of factories, and…" Emil scoured his memory for any interesting detail.

Luckily, that was the moment Uncle Torbjörn chose to ask them to hurry up. So, they walked on.

 ***

Notes: the Swedish name for the island was suggested by skrank on the discord. And I hope Emil was at least a little annoying. I tried to convey his pre -trip personality.

Thank you.  I think my comment was a little off.  I kept changing my mind on what I wanted to write.  Every time I would start, some other idea would trickle in.  Then what I was writing did not look so good.

Lalli’s story originally was supposed to be Onni’s.  For some reason Onni running around in a full diaper was funny to me.  But Lalli is more figetey, so it went to him.  The whole thing was starts and fits.  So I am grateful, it did come out ok.

It was great! And like I commented on AO3, I’m finding it fascinating to think about magic, gods and spirits related to for example technology. Could a machine have a spirit (other than the operation smoke that is)? Would the god of electricity be Thor? For the Finns, Ilmarinen the Smith would be a good match for a techno god :)

Thanks!!

That can lead to some very interesting places.  :) I'd lean toward the "smithy gods" personally, as the machines started out as lumps of metal from the earth (You could possibly toss in an earth god/spirit also?)

I have all these ideas, and need to get them written down..(It is hard sitting down to do it with so many other "distractions" (lol)

There are lots of books that explore whether intelligent machines have souls.

They are probably very dated now, but I remember Simark's Cemetary World and Time and again (When I was young, he was one of my favorite authors)

I read the book recently "American Gods" One of the story lines are there are now new world god (Like media, internet etc.)  So there could be old world machine gods.

Spoiler: show
But in the book if they lose devotes/followers they weaken.  That could be why they are not felt in the SSSS world

Excellent story Grey. And several writers, as well as a few folk I know who are into our-world magic, have suggested that the old gods of fire, light, smithcraft and communication might have a connection to such things as science, machinery, the internet and computers. One writer who explores that theme in his work is Michael Scott Rohan, who has several books in which the very mundane hero, who does computers as part of a trade network, gets sucked into magic. He winds up in a life or death situation in which he opens himself to Ogoun Fer, Ogoun of the Iron, the loa who in faiths such as Voudoun and Santeria is the master of metal and smithcraft, and discovers that when the loa overshadows him he is able to translate his mundane skills into magic. Interesting books.
